Short answer: Kalpa in winter (December to February) is cold, quiet and usually reachable. IMD normals give 9°C days and −2°C nights in December, falling to 5°C and −4°C in January, when most of the snow falls. The Shimla–Kinnaur highway (NH-5) stays open through winter, with short closures after heavy snow, so plan a buffer day and go by private SUV.

Quick answer

  • Is Kalpa open in winter? Yes. It is a lived-in village above Reckong Peo, the Kinnaur district headquarters, and the road from Shimla is kept open all winter.
  • Snow: possible from late November; most likely in January and February. Kalpa averages 94.7 mm of precipitation in January and 103.7 mm in February, much of it as snow (IMD 1991–2020).
  • Cold: January nights average −3.8°C; the record low is −15.4°C.
  • Getting there: roughly 220–265 km and 7–8 hours from Shimla (sources differ on the distance); 11–12 hours from Chandigarh.
  • Best winter plan: 2 nights in Kalpa inside a 5–7 night Kinnaur trip, with Sarahan or Narkanda on the way up.

What is Kalpa like in winter?

Kalpa sits at about 2,960 m on a shelf above the Sutlej valley, 7–8 km uphill from Reckong Peo. Its reason to exist for travellers is the view: the Kinner Kailash range and the Shivling pinnacle, about 6,000 m, rise straight across the valley. In winter the air is at its clearest, so sunrise on the range is sharper than in summer haze. For the village in every season, see our year-round Kalpa guide.

What changes in winter is the pace. The apple harvest is over, orchards are bare, and the summer crowd from Chitkul and Sangla is gone. A handful of hotels and homestays stay open, heating becomes the thing you pay for, and days are short: the sun leaves the village by mid-afternoon in December. If you want snow, empty lanes and a big Himalayan view from a warm room, it is one of the most rewarding winter stops in Himachal. If you want snow play, skiing or nightlife, Manali, Shimla or Gulmarg fit better.

How cold does Kalpa get, month by month?

These are IMD 1991–2020 normals for the Kalpa station (as published on Wikipedia’s Kalpa page). Treat them as averages; a western disturbance can drop nights well below them for a few days.

Month Day (mean max) Night (mean min) Precipitation Wet days What to expect
November 14.4°C 1.2°C 27.9 mm 1.8 Dry, clear, first frosts; traces of snow possible
December 9.3°C −1.6°C 35.1 mm 2.8 Mostly sunny and freezing at night; snow not guaranteed
January 5.2°C −3.8°C 94.7 mm 6.3 Coldest month; best odds of a snowfall; road delays likely
February 6.7°C −2.9°C 103.7 mm 7.1 Snow on the ground, more spells; slightly longer days
March 11.5°C 0.4°C 147.3 mm 7.7 Wettest month; late snow and slush

The record low in the same IMD series is −15.4°C (January). Pack for −10°C at night even on a normal trip.

When does it snow in Kalpa?

The honest answer is: in spells, mostly January to early March. December is often dry and bright, which is great for photography but not for snow. A few dated examples show the range:

  • 7 January 2021: Kalpa recorded 6 cm of snow, a −5°C low and a maximum of only 1.3°C (The Tribune, 8 January 2021).
  • 6 November 2025: only “traces of snow” with a 0.2°C minimum (PTI via The Tribune) — early-season snow is usually light.
  • 27 January 2026: fresh snowfall at Kalpa, with Kinnaur under an orange alert for heavy snow (All India Radio News).

If seeing snow fall is the point of the trip, travel between the second week of January and the end of February and keep your dates flexible by a day or two so you can move with an IMD Shimla forecast. If you are happy with snow on the peaks and some on the ground, December works and the road is easier.

Is the road to Kalpa open in winter?

Yes. Kalpa is reached from Shimla on NH-5 via Narkanda, Rampur, Jeori and Karcham, then up from Reckong Peo. This is the same road that keeps Spiti connected in winter once Kunzum La closes, which is why it gets priority clearing. Two things still catch people out:

  • Snow at Narkanda (about 2,700 m). After a heavy spell the stretch near Narkanda can be slippery or briefly shut; police sometimes allow only 4×4 vehicles until it is cleared.
  • Rockfall and landslide zones beyond Rampur. Known spots such as Nigulsari have stopped traffic for hours at a time. Drivers start early so they clear these stretches in daylight.

The last 7–8 km from Reckong Peo to Kalpa is a steep village road that ices up in the shade. A local driver usually carries chains. After fresh snow it can take a day for this link to be cleared, which is the main reason to build in a buffer day. Before you leave Shimla, check the Kinnaur district and HP Police updates for the day, and ask your hotel in Kalpa about the Peo road.

For the route choice into Spiti in general, see our explainer on Spiti via Shimla or Manali.

How do you get to Kalpa in winter?

Private car with a driver (recommended). Shimla to Kalpa takes 7–8 hours of driving. From Chandigarh it is 11–12 hours, so most people break the trip at Narkanda, Sarahan or Rampur. An SUV with good ground clearance is the sensible choice in January and February.

HRTC bus. Government buses run Shimla to Reckong Peo in the morning (travel blogger Vargis Khan lists 9:00 and 9:30 am departures at about ₹500), with local buses up to Kalpa roughly hourly. Buses are cheap and run in winter, but a snow delay can leave you arriving in the dark at −5°C. Check current times on the HRTC online booking portal.

No train or flight. The nearest railhead is Shimla (toy train from Kalka) and the nearest airports are Shimla and Chandigarh. Delhi to Kalpa by road is about 575 km, so allow two days with a night at Shimla or Narkanda.

What can you do in Kalpa in winter?

  • Sunrise on Kinner Kailash. The main event. Pick a room facing east across the valley and be up by 6:45 am.
  • Roghi village and the “Suicide Point” cliff road. About 4 km to the viewpoint and another 5 km to Roghi. In snow it is a walk, not a drive.
  • Narayan-Nagini temple and the old village lanes. Wooden Kinnauri architecture, slate roofs, and very few visitors.
  • Hu-Bu-Lan-Kar Gompa. A small Buddhist monastery in the village.
  • Chaka meadows. A 3 km climb above the village; only after asking locally about snow depth.
  • Kothi (Chandika Devi) temple. About 3 km from Reckong Peo, easy to add on the way up or down.

Chitkul and Sangla are a separate 2-hour drive, and in deep winter the Sangla–Chitkul road can close for days. Our Sangla Valley and Chitkul guide covers when it is worth trying.

A sample 4-day Kalpa winter plan from Shimla

Day Route Notes
1 Shimla → Narkanda → Sarahan Short day; Bhimakali temple in the evening; breaks the long drive
2 Sarahan → Karcham → Reckong Peo → Kalpa Leave by 8 am to clear rockfall zones in daylight; ATM at Peo
3 Kalpa: sunrise, Roghi walk, village, Kothi temple This is also your buffer day if snow closes the road
4 Kalpa → Rampur → Shimla (or Narkanda) Long drive; stop in Narkanda if snow has fallen there

Want it stretched into a full week with Sangla, Chitkul and Sarahan? Our Eccentric Kinnaur package from Chandigarh is a 6-night private-car circuit from ₹24,999 per person (twin sharing, off-season, as listed on 28 October 2026). Going on into Spiti? The Winter Spiti tour from Shimla uses Kalpa as its first high stop, from ₹28,500 per person for 6 nights. Final prices are quoted to your dates.

Where to stay in Kalpa in winter

Fewer places stay open, so book ahead and ask three questions before you pay: is the room heated (and is heating extra), is there hot water through the evening, and does the room face Kinner Kailash. Kalpa stays tend to sit at two levels: the main village and the upper road towards Roghi, which has the better view but is the first to ice over. Reckong Peo has more hotels, banks and ATMs and is a fallback if the Kalpa road is closed. Power cuts after snow are common, so a property with a generator or inverter is worth the extra cost. Mobile coverage is usually good; 4G works on the main networks.

What to pack for Kalpa in winter

  • Down jacket rated for about −10°C, thermal base layers, fleece mid-layer
  • Waterproof boots with grip (village lanes freeze), woollen socks, gloves, cap
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen — snow glare at nearly 3,000 m is strong
  • Power bank, torch, any regular medicines; lip balm and moisturiser for dry air
  • Cash for small dhabas and homestays (ATMs are in Reckong Peo, not Kalpa)

Do you need a permit for Kalpa?

No. Indian travellers need no permit for Kalpa, Sangla or Chitkul. Foreign nationals also need none for Kalpa; an Inner Line Permit is only needed beyond Jangi, on the stretch towards Nako and Spiti near the border. If you are a foreign visitor continuing to Spiti, your operator can arrange the permit, usually in Reckong Peo. Rules can change, so confirm with the district administration before you go.

What this means for your trip

December suits travellers who want clear views, crisp days and an easier road. January and February suit those who want real snow and are happy to wait out a closure. Either way, give Kalpa two nights, drive in daylight, and do not tie it to a fixed flight home the next morning. If you would rather have snow with less effort, compare Shimla in January or our wider Himachal snowfall guide for winter 2026–27.

FAQ: Kalpa in winter

Is Kalpa worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want quiet, a big mountain view and snow without the Manali crowds. The Kinner Kailash range is at its clearest in winter and the village is very peaceful. The trade-offs are cold nights near −4°C in January, short days, fewer open hotels and possible road delays after snow, so plan two nights and a buffer day.

Does it snow in Kalpa in December?

It can, but December is usually dry. IMD normals give only 35.1 mm of precipitation over about three wet days in December, against 94.7 mm in January and 103.7 mm in February. Expect snow on the peaks and possibly old snow in shady spots; for a better chance of fresh snowfall, go between mid-January and February.

How cold is Kalpa in January?

Very cold. The IMD 1991–2020 normals give a mean maximum of 5.2°C and a mean minimum of −3.8°C in January, and the record low at Kalpa is −15.4°C. Rooms need proper heating, and you should pack a down jacket, thermals, gloves and boots with grip for frozen lanes.

Is the Shimla–Kalpa road open in winter?

Yes, NH-5 from Shimla to Reckong Peo is kept open all winter because it is also Spiti’s winter lifeline. Heavy snow can briefly close the Narkanda stretch or the steep Peo–Kalpa link road, and rockfall zones beyond Rampur can stop traffic for hours. Start early, travel by SUV and check local updates on the day.

How many days do you need for Kalpa?

Two nights in Kalpa is right: one for arrival and sunset, one full day for sunrise, Roghi and the village, which doubles as a buffer day. Including the drive from Shimla and a night at Sarahan or Narkanda, a Kalpa-only winter trip is 4 days; with Sangla and Chitkul it becomes 6–7 days.

Can you visit Kalpa and Chitkul together in winter?

Often, but not always. Chitkul is about 2 hours from Kalpa via Karcham and Sangla, and the Sangla–Chitkul road can close for several days after heavy snow in January and February. In December it is usually possible. Keep Chitkul as a flexible day rather than a fixed promise in your plan.
