Snow and skiing in Narkanda, at a glance
Narkanda sits at about 2,708 m on NH-5, 63–65 km beyond Shimla, and is the higher, quieter snow option after Kufri. Snow usually settles from late December to February; Hatu Peak above it had its first snow of this season on 25 October 2026. Beginner ski lessons and gear hire run on the gentle Dhumri slopes from about January to March, when there is enough snow.

How high does your snow day go?
- Shimla ~2,200 m → snow only in big spells.
- Kufri ~2,500 m, 16–20 km → closest snow, least reliable.
- Narkanda ~2,708 m, 63–65 km → snow more often, ski slope.
- Hatu Peak ~3,400 m, +7–8 km → views; road often shut in snow.
How a Narkanda snow or ski day works
-
Check the week
Send dates and group on WhatsApp; we check the IMD forecast, Shimla police road updates and whether the slope has enough snow that week.
-
Hotel and cab
Hotel in Shimla or Narkanda; a cab with chains (a 4×4 after fresh snow) and a hill driver.
-
Early start up NH-5
Via Kufri, Fagu and Theog — 2–2.5 h on a clear day, longer after snow.
-
Morning on the slope
Gear fitting, then a lesson on the gentle Dhumri runs — or snow play if you only want snow.
-
Afternoon
Hatu Peak only if the road is cleared and open; otherwise Tani Jubbar lake or a café stop.
-
Night or onward
Stay in Narkanda (snow lasts longer up here) or return to Shimla before dark; continue to Kinnaur, Spiti or Manali next day.
Narkanda or Kufri?
Narkanda is higher, so snow comes more often and lasts longer. Kufri is closer to Shimla but has the least reliable snow — many guests stop at Kufri on the way up and spend the day in Narkanda.
Wear layers, waterproof boots and gloves; if you have no snow gear, ask us to add a snow suit and boots to the quote. For a deeper ski course, compare all three slopes.
Narkanda snow by month

| Dec | Snow usually arrives, often late December; big spells can shut NH-5 for hours | Christmas snow trip |
| Jan–Feb | Most reliable snow; lessons run; Hatu road often blocked | Skiing, snow play |
| Mar | Early-March lessons if snow holds; slush later | Last ski chance |
| Apr–Jun | No snow; apple blossom (April); Hatu drive and trek easy | Summer escape, Hatu |
| Jul–Sep | Monsoon; the summit is often in cloud by late morning | Not ideal |

What we check before your Narkanda day
Suzu Travels is an HP Tourism registered travel agent (Reg. No. DTO-MND-11-243/2022). We arrange lessons with registered local operators and plan around these checks:
- Registered instructors onlySkiing is arranged only with registered local operators and qualified instructors; helmet and correctly sized boots before you step on the slope.
- NH-5 after snowThe road gets blocked at Kufri, Fagu, Shilaru and Narkanda and is usually reopened once cleared. We drive after clearing, with chains or a 4×4 and a local driver — never self-drive a hatchback on ice.
- Orders on the dayWe follow Shimla district administration and police orders; buses may be diverted via Basantpur–Kingal when NH-5 is shut.
- Hatu Peak road7–8 km, narrow and steep, often snow-blocked Dec–Feb — no walking up alone in snow.
- Warm rooms, safelyElectric heaters only; never a coal angithi or unvented gas heater in a closed room (carbon-monoxide risk).
- KidsBeginner lessons suit older children — the elementary ski course at Solang starts at 10 years, a good yardstick. We confirm kid-size gear in the quote.

Narkanda snow & skiing — questions
Does Narkanda get snow?
Yes — usually from late December to February, sometimes into March. This season Hatu Peak above Narkanda had its first snow on 25 October 2026 (The Tribune).
Can you ski in Narkanda?
Yes, on the gentle Dhumri slopes near HPTDC Hotel Hatu, with lessons and gear hire from about January to March when there is enough snow. It suits first-timers; Solang has more facilities — compare all three slopes.
How far is Narkanda from Shimla?
About 63–65 km on NH-5, 2–2.5 hours in clear weather and longer after snowfall.
Can I go to Hatu Peak in winter?
Only when the 7–8 km road is cleared — it is often snow-blocked from December to February, and the Hatu Mata temple usually closes in deep winter. April–June and October are the easy months.
Narkanda or Kufri for snow?
Narkanda is higher, so snow comes more often and lasts longer; Kufri is much closer to Shimla but has the least reliable snow. Many guests do both on one day.
Is the road open after snowfall?
Heavy snow can block NH-5 at Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda until it is cleared, often within the day. We time your drive to the clearing and send a cab with chains or a 4×4.
Do I need a permit for Narkanda?
No permit is needed for Narkanda or Hatu Peak — the Rohtang permit applies only near Manali.
