Guide · Skiing in Kashmir

Himalayan powder — and the travel advice to read first.

Gulmarg in Kashmir is India’s best-known ski area: a meadow town at about 2,650 m (8,700 ft) with a two-stage gondola to nearly 4,000 m. Here is the season, the lifts, the ski hire and how a trip is arranged — starting with what the UK and US governments currently advise. Written by a travel company based in the Himalaya.

Before anything else: what governments advise about Kashmir

The UK FCDO advises against all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and names Gulmarg, Srinagar and the Jammu–Srinagar highway; the only exceptions are flying to and from Jammu city and travel within Jammu city (updated 7 Oct 2026). The US State Department rates Jammu and Kashmir ‘Level 4: Do Not Travel’, except eastern Ladakh and Leh (checked 23 Oct 2026). The FCDO also warns: ‘Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).’ Check your own government’s latest advice and your insurer’s terms before you book anything — if they rule Gulmarg out, we will happily plan snow in Himachal instead.

We don’t tell you the advice is wrong or out of date, and we don’t promise any destination is safe. We share the official advice with dates, and we plan only what you decide is right for you.

Gulmarg ski season and key numbers

Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation (JKTDC) says the ski season usually starts around mid-December and runs to mid-April. Snow varies year to year, so we confirm conditions before you pay.

Mid-Aprseason usually ends (JKTDC)
2,650 m8,700 ft — Gulmarg's meadow and golf course
≈3,980 m13,000 ft — Apharwat gondola station

Gulmarg has a long ski history: the Ski Club of India was set up here in 1927, and India’s first National Winter Games were held here in 1998 (JKTDC).

The Gulmarg gondola: two stages up the mountain

The gondola is run by the J&K Cable Car Corporation (JKCCC), a government corporation, and opened in 1998. Heights and ride times below are from JKTDC and Incredible India; the two sources round slightly differently.

Stage From → to Top station Ride
Phase 1 Gulmarg → Kongdoori about 3,100 m (10,200 ft) about 9–10 minutes
Phase 2 Kongdoori → Apharwat about 3,980 m (13,000 ft) about 12 minutes

Incredible India gives winter operating hours of 10 am to 5 pm and notes that the gondola can stop in snowstorms or bad weather — plan spare days. JKCCC added QR-based online ski-pass booking in January 2026; we help you book through the official channel only.

Lifts, lessons and ski hire

Beginners

JKTDC lists three ski lifts suited to beginners and says trained instructors are available.

Intermediates

JKTDC lists one chair lift for intermediate skiers. From the top of the gondola there is a downhill run of about 3 km (2 mi); Incredible India also notes snowboarding down from Kongdoori.

Ski hire

Skis, boots, sticks, gloves and goggles can be hired on the spot from the government-run ski shop (JKTDC). Bring your own if you prefer — we’ll make room in the car.

Ski training

The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) was set up at Gulmarg in 1968 by India’s Ministry of Tourism. Course places and eligibility are set by IISM — check with them directly.

Off-piste

Gulmarg is known for deep powder off the marked runs. We do not arrange off-piste or backcountry skiing; if you plan it, go only with a qualified local mountain guide and the right avalanche equipment.

If the advice rules Kashmir out: snow in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh is our home region, and it is not covered by the Kashmir advisories quoted above. It is not a Gulmarg-style ski resort, but the hill towns get snow from December to February.

Manali and Shimla in winter

Snowy hill towns, deodar forests and mountain roads our drivers know well. Compare the two regions in Manali vs Kashmir, or read Manali in January.

When to go

December to February for snow; spring and autumn for clear roads. Our best time to visit India guide has the month-by-month view.

Add the Golden Triangle

You can pair the snow with Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, which are in season from October to March — see our Golden Triangle tour.
