Quick answer

  • Best for most visitors: private car and driver via Ranakpur, leaving Udaipur around 08:30 to reach the temple as it opens to tourists at 12:00.
  • With more time: add Kumbhalgarh fort (long day) or spend a night near Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur.
  • Cheapest: private or state bus, 5–7 hours, dozens of departures a day.
  • Train: no convenient direct service. Flight: no nonstop service (checked 28 October 2026).

Plan this trip with a local operator. We build Rajasthan routes for international travellers with a private car and an English-speaking driver, so Udaipur to Jodhpur becomes a day with Ranakpur (and Kumbhalgarh, if you like) rather than a transfer: see our 12-day Rajasthan tour · WhatsApp +91 70874 88961 (WhatsApp works internationally) · info@suzutravels.com. How far is Udaipur from Jodhpur, and how long does it take?

The two cities are about 250–265 km apart by road, depending on the route (Triveni Cabs gives 260 km; the 12Go bus listing gives 265 km). On the direct highway a car averages 50–60 km an hour with a tea stop, so 4.5–5.5 hours is a fair plan. Udaipur sits in the green Aravalli hills and Jodhpur on the edge of the Thar Desert, so you watch the landscape dry out as you go north-west.

The route most visitors choose runs through the Aravallis to Ranakpur (about 90 km and 2–2.5 hours from Udaipur), then north via Sadri and Pali to Jodhpur (about 160 km and 3 hours). That is a longer drive, but it turns a transfer into the best day of sightseeing between the two cities.

Udaipur to Jodhpur: which option should you choose?

Option Time Good for Watch out for
Private car + driver via Ranakpur 8–9 h door to door with the temple visit Most visitors: couples, families, anyone with luggage Long day; leave by 08:30–09:00 to be at Ranakpur for 12:00
Car via Kumbhalgarh + Ranakpur 10–11 h Fort and temple lovers with energy Arrive in Jodhpur after dark; better split with a night near Kumbhalgarh
Car, direct highway 4.5–5.5 h Short trips, early flights out of Jodhpur You skip the two best sights in the region
Bus (private or RSRTC) 5–7 h Backpackers on a budget Bus stands, not hotels; luggage space; long waits with no stops to see sights
Train Not practical — No convenient direct train; rail goes round via Ajmer or Marwar
Flight Not available — No nonstop flight; a connection via Delhi or Mumbai takes most of a day

Why do most travellers go via Ranakpur?

The Ranakpur Jain temple, dedicated to Adinath, the first Jain tirthankara, is one of the finest buildings in India and lies almost exactly on the way. Built from the 15th century (a copper-plate record of 1436 and an inscription of 1439 name its patron and architect), it is a marble hall of 1,444 carved pillars, no two said to be alike, set in a forested valley of the Aravallis. Even travellers who have “done” temples in Jaipur and Varanasi tend to rank it as a highlight of Rajasthan.

The timing works neatly. The temple is used for worship in the morning and opens to non-Jain visitors from 12:00 to 17:00. Leave Udaipur at about 08:30, stop for tea in the hills, and you arrive just after noon. Spend 1.5–2 hours there, have a simple vegetarian lunch (the temple trust’s dining hall or a roadside dhaba, a family-run highway restaurant), and you reach Jodhpur by about 19:00.

Ranakpur visiting rules for foreign visitors

  • Fee: Indian visitors enter free; foreign visitors pay ₹200 (about US$2 at roughly ₹95 to the dollar, October 2026), plus ₹100 for a camera, as listed by Rajasthan Driver; an audio guide is offered at the entrance. Check at the gate, as fees change.
  • Dress: shoulders and knees covered. If your clothes don’t pass, long trousers are lent at the entrance.
  • Not allowed inside: shoes, leather (belts, wallets, bags), food and cigarettes. Lockers are available.
  • Temple custom: the temple asks women who are menstruating not to enter. Visitors are expected to respect this.

Should you add Kumbhalgarh fort?

Kumbhalgarh is the other great sight on this road: a hill fort built in the 15th century under Rana Kumbha of Mewar, with a wall about 36 km long that snakes over the ridges. It is one of the six Hill Forts of Rajasthan on the UNESCO World Heritage list (2013). The fort is about 80 km (2 hours) from Udaipur and about 50 km of winding hill road (1–1.5 hours) from Ranakpur.

It opens 09:00–18:00. Published foreign-visitor fees differ: Rajasthan Driver and Lonely Planet give ₹600 (Indians ₹40), while our Jaipur to Udaipur guide found about ₹300 under ASI’s Category B rate, with a draft ASI proposal (September 2026) to move Kumbhalgarh into the higher Category A. Budget for ₹300–600 (about US$3–6) and check the price at the gate. A sound-and-light show in Hindi runs at about 18:30–18:45.

Doing Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur in one day from Udaipur to Jodhpur is possible: leave at 07:00, give the fort two hours, reach Ranakpur by early afternoon and arrive in Jodhpur at night. It is a lot of road. The better plan, if your trip allows, is a night at one of the resorts below Kumbhalgarh: you see the fort in the soft evening light, watch the show, then visit Ranakpur the next day at noon and drive on to Jodhpur. A private car with a driver is the only easy way to do either version; if you would rather base yourself in Udaipur, our Udaipur and Kumbhalgarh tour covers the fort as a day out.

What does the day look like by car?

Time Udaipur → Ranakpur → Jodhpur (one day) With a night near Kumbhalgarh
08:30 Leave Udaipur, climb into the Aravallis Day 1: late morning start from Udaipur
11:00 Tea stop; villages, fields, langur monkeys by the road Day 1: Kumbhalgarh fort from about 14:00; walk a section of the wall
12:00–14:00 Ranakpur temple; lunch Day 1: sunset on the walls; sound-and-light show; overnight
14:00–17:00 Drive via Sadri and Pali Day 2: drive to Ranakpur (1–1.5 hours); temple from 12:00
18:30–19:30 Arrive Jodhpur; dinner with a view of Mehrangarh Day 2: arrive Jodhpur early evening

Our drivers on this route know where the clean rest stops are and which roads into Jodhpur’s old town are passable for a car, which matters when your hotel is in the lanes below the fort. Our Jodhpur travel guide covers Mehrangarh, the blue city and where to stay. See how our private car and driver service works for international travellers.

Is there a train from Udaipur to Jodhpur?

Not one that makes sense for this journey. The 12Go route listing shows no train between the two cities, and our check of booking sites on 28 October 2026 found no convenient direct service. Rail connections go the long way round via Ajmer or Marwar Junction and take far longer than the road. Trains are excellent elsewhere in Rajasthan, for example Jodhpur to Jaisalmer, which has several good daily trains; if you plan to use them, our guide to Indian train classes explains which class to book.

What about the bus?

Buses are frequent and cheap. The 12Go listing shows around 48 departures a day from private operators, with AC seater and semi-sleeper buses taking about 4.5–6.5 hours and fares from about US$4–9 (prices shown on 28 October 2026); Rajasthan’s state bus company, RSRTC, also runs the route. The trade-offs are the usual ones: buses run from bus stands rather than hotels, luggage space is limited, and you pass Ranakpur without stopping. Many night buses are sleeper coaches, which save a hotel night but are not comfortable for everyone.

Can you fly from Udaipur to Jodhpur?

No. FlightsFrom shows no scheduled nonstop flights on the route as of 28 October 2026; TruJet briefly flew it in 2022. Both airports have flights to Delhi and Mumbai, but a connection takes most of a day once you count check-in and transfers, so the road is faster. Airline schedules change each season, so check if you have very little time.

Udaipur to Jodhpur or the other way round?

It doesn’t matter much. A classic Rajasthan circuit runs Jaipur → Udaipur → Jodhpur → Jaisalmer, or the reverse; see our guide to Jaipur to Udaipur for the leg before this one. Driving north from Udaipur, you reach Ranakpur at noon with no waiting. Driving south from Jodhpur, leave at about 08:00 and you arrive at Ranakpur at around 11:30–12:00, then reach Udaipur for sunset over Lake Pichola. Our 12-day Rajasthan tour uses either direction depending on flights.

When is the best time to make this drive?

October to March is best: dry, sunny days of about 25–30°C and cool nights, which suit long hours in a car and walking on Kumbhalgarh’s walls. December and January mornings can be chilly in the hills, and fog occasionally slows the early start. April to June is very hot (Jodhpur often passes 40°C), so start at dawn. In the July–September monsoon the Aravallis turn green and Kumbhalgarh is at its most beautiful, though rain can slow the hill roads. Our India in December guide covers winter weather across the country.

What this means for your trip

  • Plan Udaipur to Jodhpur as a full sightseeing day, not a transfer: by car via Ranakpur, 8–9 hours.
  • Add a night near Kumbhalgarh if you have one spare; it is one of the best-value nights on a Rajasthan trip.
  • Bring socks (temple floors are hot or cold barefoot), trousers or a long skirt, and leave leather in the car.
  • Carry some cash in small notes for entry fees, lockers, tea stops and tips; our note on tipping in India covers drivers and guides.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Udaipur to Jodhpur?

About 250–265 km and 4.5–5.5 hours on the direct highway. Most visitors go via the Ranakpur Jain temple instead, which adds an hour or two of driving plus 1.5–2 hours at the temple, so plan 8–9 hours door to door. Adding Kumbhalgarh fort as well makes it a 10–11 hour day.

Is there a direct train from Udaipur to Jodhpur?

Not a practical one. As of 28 October 2026 the booking sites we checked show no convenient direct train; rail journeys between the two cities go the long way round via Ajmer or Marwar Junction and take far longer than the road. For international visitors a car, or a bus if you are on a tight budget, is the realistic choice.

Can I fly from Udaipur to Jodhpur?

No. There is no scheduled nonstop flight between the two cities as of 28 October 2026; the short TruJet service that flew the route ended in 2022. Flying would mean connecting through Delhi or Mumbai, which takes most of a day, so the road is quicker.

What are the Ranakpur temple timings for tourists?

The Ranakpur Jain temple is open for worship from early morning, but non-Jain visitors are admitted from 12:00 to 17:00. Foreign visitors pay an entry fee (₹200, with a ₹100 camera charge, at the time of checking) and an audio guide is offered at the entrance. Leather, food and shorts are not allowed; trousers are lent at the gate.

Is it worth visiting Kumbhalgarh on the way to Jodhpur?

Yes, if you start early and accept a long day. Kumbhalgarh is a UNESCO-listed 15th-century hill fort with a 36 km wall, about 80 km from Udaipur and 1–1.5 hours from Ranakpur. Doing both in one day is tight; many travellers spend a night near Kumbhalgarh to see the fort and its evening sound-and-light show.

Udaipur to Jodhpur or Jodhpur to Udaipur: which direction is better?

Either works, and the stops are the same. Going Udaipur to Jodhpur, you reach Ranakpur around midday, exactly when the temple opens to visitors. In the other direction you leave Jodhpur early, reach Ranakpur after noon and arrive in Udaipur by evening, which also fits well.

How many days should I spend in Udaipur and Jodhpur?

Two nights in each is a comfortable minimum. Udaipur needs a day for the City Palace, Lake Pichola and the old town, and Jodhpur a day for Mehrangarh Fort and the blue streets below it. If you add a night near Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur, the drive between them becomes relaxed rather than rushed.
