Spiti is the hardest circuit in Himachal to operate and the easiest to sell badly. The scenery sells itself; the logistics do not forgive mistakes. Why Spiti needs a specialist DMC, not a general one
Four things break Spiti trips, and all four are ground problems:
- Altitude. Kaza sits at roughly 3,800m. A group driven straight up from Manali over Kunzum La gains altitude far too fast. The Shimla–Kinnaur approach gains it gradually, which is why we route most first-time groups that way even though it takes an extra day.
- Seasonality. The Manali–Gramphu–Kunzum La–Kaza road is open roughly June to October. The Shimla–Kinnaur road stays open much longer and is the only winter access. Chandratal is reachable only while Kunzum La is open.
- Vehicles. Long unsurfaced sections, water crossings and high passes. A sedan booked to save money is a trip that fails on day three.
- Connectivity. Mobile coverage is patchy to absent across much of the valley. If nobody on the ground is tracking the group, nobody is tracking the group.
The two Spiti routes, and when each one works

If a client wants Chandratal in April, the answer is no. We would rather say that before you have sold it than after.

You keep the client relationship, your pricing and your branding. We quote you net rates, you add your margin, and we never contact your client directly.
Permits and paperwork
- Inner Line Permits are required for foreign nationals on parts of the Kinnaur–Spiti circuit, including beyond Rekong Peo. Processing takes time — tell us nationality at the enquiry stage, not on arrival.
- Indian nationals do not need a permit for the standard Spiti circuit.
- Seasonal closures at Kunzum La are not negotiable and are decided by snow, not by calendar.
Winter Spiti
Winter Spiti is a genuine expedition, not a cold version of the summer trip. Access is via Shimla and Kinnaur only, daylight is short, many properties shut, and heating and water arrangements matter more than views. Vehicles we deploy in Spiti
For Spiti specifically we deploy higher-clearance vehicles and drivers with high-altitude experience — typically Innova Crysta, Innova Hycross or equivalent SUVs for small groups, and Force Tempo Traveller for larger movements where the road profile allows. We will tell you when a vehicle is the wrong call for a route rather than take the booking and let it fail.

How many days does a Spiti circuit need?
It depends on the route and the acclimatisation plan, and we build the day count around those rather than compressing it to hit a price. Send us the brief and we will tell you honestly what the route needs.
Do foreign nationals need a permit for Spiti?
Yes, on parts of the Kinnaur–Spiti circuit, including beyond Rekong Peo. We arrange these, but need nationality details early.
