When is the ski season in Gulmarg?
Skiing depends on snow cover, which usually builds from mid-December. January and February bring the coldest days (Gulmarg’s January average is about 0.7°C by day and -7.7°C at night) and the most dependable conditions. IISM runs its courses from 20 December to 13 March in 2026-27, which is a good guide to the usable season. Gulmarg also hosted the Khelo India Winter Games snow events on 23–26 February 2026 (The Tribune).
| Period | Snow and slopes | Crowds and cost |
|---|---|---|
| Mid–late December | Base building; depends on early spells | Christmas–New Year is the busiest, dearest week |
| January | Coldest, good snow, short days | Busy on weekends |
| February | Usually the deepest base; longer days | Our pick for learners |
| Early March | Softer snow in the afternoon | Quieter, cheaper |

Short trip? Lessons and gear hire on the spot
If you have three to five days, not two weeks, hire an instructor locally. These are market rates from operator listings, not official tariffs (approx., Dream Valley Travels, 16 October 2026; Via Kashmir, 2026):
| Item | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| Group lesson | ₹800–1,200 per half day |
| Private instructor | ₹2,500–4,000 per day (some quote ₹1,500–2,500 for 2 hours) |
| Ski set (skis, boots, poles) | ₹500–1,200 per day |
| Snowboard and boots | ₹700–1,000 per day |
| Gondola (sightseeing tickets) | ₹750 Phase 1, ₹950 Phase 2 (JKTDC); skiers’ passes are priced separately on the JKCCL portal |
Tips: hire a helmet, check that boots fit before you leave the shop, and agree the instructor’s hours and price in advance. Ask your hotel to recommend a registered instructor rather than taking the first person who approaches you on the slope.
A 3-day beginner ski plan in Gulmarg
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Srinagar to Gulmarg by 4×4 or chained car (about 50 km). Fit gear in the afternoon; one hour on the nursery slope to get used to boots and balance. |
| Day 2 | Morning lesson: snowplough stops and turns on the nursery slope. Afternoon practice; rest early. |
| Day 3 | Linked turns; if confident, try the easier terrain near Kongdoori with your instructor. Drive back to Srinagar or on to Pahalgam. |
Three days gets most adults sliding and turning on easy slopes. To ski the gondola terrain properly, you need the 14-day course or several seasons of practice. Apharwat’s upper slopes are expert, avalanche-prone terrain; never go off-piste there without a qualified guide and avalanche gear.
How do you reach Gulmarg in ski season?
Fly or take the train to Srinagar, then drive about 50 km via Tangmarg. After snowfall, only 4×4 vehicles or cars with anti-skid chains are allowed between Tangmarg and Gulmarg under the SDM Gulmarg’s winter advisory; chains are fitted by registered vendors in Tangmarg (₹600 a pair in December 2024). Our Srinagar taxi service lists drop fares (sedan from ₹2,499 to Gulmarg). More on getting there and where to stay is in our Gulmarg guide.
Where to stay for skiing
- IISM students stay in the institute’s hostels (included in the fee).
- Short-trip skiers should stay in Gulmarg itself, close to the gondola base and nursery slopes, so you can be on snow by 9:30 am.
- Heating matters more than anything else in a winter room; confirm it in writing.
Snow trips with Gulmarg nights: Snowclad Kashmir (winter, 6 days), quoted to your dates, or the Magical Kashmir Economy tour from ₹16,999 per person (twin sharing) on its live page. International visitors should see our Gulmarg ski holiday page.
What to pack for skiing in Gulmarg
- Waterproof ski jacket and trousers (or hire locally), thermals and fleece.
- Waterproof gloves, a warm hat, neck gaiter and ski goggles; high-SPF sunscreen.
- Government photo ID and a postpaid SIM (prepaid SIMs from outside J&K don’t work in Kashmir).
- Basic medicines; Gulmarg is at about 2,650 m and the gondola top is near 4,000 m.
Gulmarg or Himachal for learning to ski?
Gulmarg has more reliable snow, a high gondola and the IISM course; Himachal options are closer to Delhi but snow-dependent. If you want to compare, read our skiing in Himachal and Solang Valley guides.
