How long each driving day really is
On a car trip, the hours on the road matter more than the number of sights. These are the times our drivers plan for on the routes these trips use. They are taken from our own taxi route pages and assume an early start and normal traffic.

Two things follow from this. First, starting in Chandigarh removes the two longest days on the plains. That is why the Chandigarh trip is cheaper and less tiring, even though the hotels are the same. Second, the Shimla-to-Manali day is a full day whichever city you start from. The road drops from Shimla to the Sutlej at Bilaspur and climbs again through Mandi and the Aut tunnel into the Kullu valley. Our drivers do not run the hill stretches late at night, so expect an early start that day.
The road between Kullu and Manali was badly damaged in the August 2025 floods, and repairs were still under way in 2026. Some sections are single-lane, so the last stretch into Manali can be slow. The driver checks the day’s traffic before leaving.
Which car for your group
Package rates are for a private AC sedan such as a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios. A sedan seats four people and takes about three bags. For more people or more luggage, we quote a bigger car rather than squeezing everyone in:
- Sedan (Dzire, Etios, Aura): up to 4 people, about 3 bags. Included in the package rate.
- Maruti Ertiga or Kia Carens: up to 6 people. A good fit for a family of five or six.
- Toyota Innova Crysta: up to 7 people with about 5 bags. It is the most comfortable car on the hill roads, which is why many families with elderly parents choose it.
- Tempo Traveller (12–14 seats) or Force Urbania (up to 17 seats): for a joint family, a group of friends or an office trip.

Five things to know before a Shimla Manali trip by car
1. Cars cannot go on the Mall Road
Shimla’s Mall Road and the Ridge are closed to cars. The driver drops you at the nearest road point to your hotel. Some central hotels are a short walk from there, so pack a bag you can carry for a few minutes.
2. Some Manali trips use a local taxi
Rohtang Pass needs an online permit that limits the number of vehicles each day, and trips there run in Manali-registered union taxis at union rates. Some other Manali side trips also follow union rules. Your quote states which days your own car drives and which need a local taxi, so nothing is a surprise on the day. 3. The AC is switched off on the climbs
The AC is switched off in hilly areas, as required by safety and vehicle guidelines. This is written into the policy of every Himachal trip we run, so it is worth knowing before a June drive.
4. Snow months need a plan B
From mid-December to February, roads above Shimla and Manali can close for a day after fresh snow. Drivers carry snow chains. Sometimes the last stretch is done in a local 4×4, and we confirm this the day before. Snow is never guaranteed on a given date. 5. Car-sick? Choose the start city carefully
The first hour out of Shimla towards Bilaspur has the tightest bends of the whole trip. If anyone in your group gets car-sick, tell the driver at the start. He will plan more stops and drive slower on the bends. If the hills worry you, the Chandigarh start keeps total time in the car lowest. Season calendar: when the car trip costs more
The rates above are off-season rates. In peak season the rate goes up by a fixed 25%. These are the dates we use:
- Off-season (the rates shown): 1 July – 30 September, 1 November – 19 December, and 6 January – 14 March.
- Peak season (off-season rate + 25%): 15 March – 30 June, the whole of October, and 20 December – 5 January.

Is the same car and driver with us for the whole trip?
Yes. One private car and driver stay with you from pickup to drop. The exception is trips that local rules reserve for Manali union taxis, such as Rohtang Pass. Your quote lists those days.
Which car is used for a couple?
A private AC sedan such as a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios. From Delhi, the sample rate assumes four people share the car, so a couple pays more per person. Tell us you are two and we will quote the exact figure.
Can we take an Innova Crysta instead of a sedan?
Yes. An Innova Crysta seats up to seven with more luggage space, and it is more comfortable on long hill days. It costs extra on top of the package rate, and the quote shows the supplement as a separate line.
How many hours is the drive from Shimla to Manali?
About 7–8 hours for roughly 250 km via Bilaspur, Mandi and Kullu, with a 6–7 am start. It can take longer in peak season or while the Kullu–Manali road repairs are going on.
Is a Delhi start or a Chandigarh start better for a trip by car?
Chandigarh, if you can reach it by train or flight. It saves two long drives on the plains and costs less. Start from Delhi if you want door-to-door pickup with no train or flight.
