Patnitop is a hill resort at about 2,024 m in Udhampur district, roughly 112 km from Jammu. At that height it is far colder than Jammu or Katra: winter days are cold and nights drop below freezing, and snow usually falls from late December to February, most of all in January. Summers (April–June) are mild and green — the main escape from Jammu’s 38 °C heat. The monsoon (July–August) brings heavy rain, fog and landslides. Since the Chenani–Nashri tunnel opened in 2017, the Jammu–Srinagar highway bypasses Patnitop, so you reach it on the old road — which is cleared after snow but can close for a while in heavy falls.

The Chenani–Nashri tunnel and the road to Patnitop
Since 2017 the 9 km Chenani–Nashri tunnel on NH-44 takes through traffic between Jammu and Srinagar under the Patnitop ridge. To visit Patnitop you leave the highway and take the old road up from the Chenani side.
In the monsoon, landslides are common on this stretch and on the highway beyond Ramban; fog cuts visibility on the hill road. Drive in daylight and allow extra time.
Going on to Kashmir? Compare the road with the Vande Bharat train from Katra: Katra to Srinagar train.
