Heat, monsoon and fog: what to expect in Jammu
Summer (April–June): Jammu is as hot as the northern plains. Most travellers only change trains or flights here and head straight to Katra or Srinagar, where it is much cooler.
Monsoon (July–September): July and August each bring over 400 mm of rain. Landslides between Ramban and Banihal often close the Jammu–Srinagar highway (NH-44), so the Katra–Srinagar train or a flight is more reliable in these months.
Winter (December–February): sunny, comfortable days but cold mornings and evenings, with dense fog on many days. Early trains and flights can run late, so leave slack in onward plans.
Best time: October–November and February–March — neither hot nor wet. These are also the most comfortable months for the Vaishno Devi climb: Vaishno Devi weather.
