India’s tiger safari season restarts today, 1 October 2026 — but Jim Corbett opens in stages, not all at once. Core zones at Ranthambore, Sariska, Tadoba and the Madhya Pradesh reserves (Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna, Satpura) reopen on 1 October after the monsoon break. At Corbett Tiger Reserve, only the year-round zones (Jhirna and Dhela) are running in early October. Bijrani is on the official calendar from 15 October, and Dhikala, Durgadevi, Sonanadi and Pakhro open on 15 November. Two booking windows matter this week. Corbett’s online booking for the Dhikala canter and for day visits in Durgadevi, Sonanadi and Pakhro opened on 1 October 2026. Online booking for night stays with check-in from 15 to 21 November 2026 opens on Sunday, 4 October 2026, at 10:00 AM.
Here is what that means if you are planning Jim Corbett in October 2026, or trying to get a Dhikala night stay for the opening week.
What changed on 1 October 2026
Most of India’s big tiger reserves close their core zones from 1 July to 30 September. Rain washes out the forest tracks, and the break covers the breeding season. The 2026 season restarts today:
- Madhya Pradesh — core zones at Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna and Satpura reopen on 1 October. Reports from the week before opening say about 200 Bandhavgarh guides have been through training on visitor behaviour and ecology.
- Rajasthan — Ranthambore’s core Zones 1–5 and Sariska’s core circuits reopen on 1 October.
- Maharashtra — Tadoba-Andhari’s core areas, closed since 30 June, reopen on 1 October.
- Gujarat — Gir is scheduled for 16 October. A report of an earlier opening on 3 October had not been confirmed on the official portal at the time of writing, so plan on 16 October until the booking site says otherwise.
- Chhattisgarh — Indravati Tiger Reserve is due to open to tourists on 1 November 2026, its first season in about four decades, on only two or three safari routes at first.
Corbett works differently. Some of its zones never close for the monsoon and others open in two later steps, so “is Jim Corbett open?” depends on the zone.
Jim Corbett zone calendar for the 2026-27 season
This is the official zone calendar published by Corbett Tiger Reserve, as checked on 1 October 2026:
| Zone | Entry gate | Official season | Status in October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jhirna | Dhela | Throughout the year | Open |
| Dhela | Dhela | Throughout the year | Open |
| Garjia | Garjiya | Throughout the year | Listed year-round, but it reopened with Bijrani on 15 October in 2025 after monsoon damage. Check the official notice before you book. |
| Bijrani | Amdanda | 15 October – 30 June | From 15 October (scheduled) |
| Dhikala | Dhangari | 15 November – 15 June | Closed; booking open for opening dates |
| Durgadevi | Durgadevi | 15 November – 15 June | Closed until 15 November |
| Sonanadi | Vatanvasa | 15 November – 15 June | Closed until 15 November |
| Pakhro | Pakhro | 15 November – 15 June | Closed until 15 November |
One caution about the “scheduled” dates. In 2025, Corbett’s director Saket Badola said the monsoon had brought heavier rain than usual and badly damaged the forest roads. Bijrani and Garjia then reopened for day visits on 15 October, and overnight stays started on 15 November. The 2026 monsoon was also rough in Uttarakhand; the Char Dham Yatra was suspended under an IMD red alert in late September. The reserve can delay a zone if its tracks are not ready, so treat 15 October and 15 November as the planned dates and confirm on the official site in the week before you travel.
The two booking windows that matter this week
1 October 2026: Dhikala canter and the 15 November zones
According to the reserve’s notice, online booking for the canter ride in the Dhikala zone and day visits in the Durgadevi, Sonanadi and Pakhro zones opened on 1 October 2026, for visits up to 15 November 2026. In practice that means opening day. If you want to be in one of these zones on 15 November, the booking is already live.
4 October 2026, 10:00 AM: Dhikala and forest rest house night stays
Online booking for night stays with check-in from 15 November to 21 November 2026 opens on Sunday, 4 October 2026, at 10:00 AM. Dhikala’s forest lodges are the most wanted rooms in the reserve. Last season, ETV Bharat reported on 31 October 2025, before Dhikala had even opened, that domestic night stays were full through December 2025 and the foreign-tourist quota was booked until 18 January 2026. If a night inside the park during the first week of the season is your goal, be online at 10:00 on Sunday with everyone’s ID ready to upload.
Rules that catch people out
- ID must match. You upload an ID proof for every visitor while booking, and it is checked at the gate. If the ID shown at entry does not match the one uploaded, entry is refused.
- 180-second wait. The booking system makes you wait 180 seconds on the Visitor Details page during both night-stay and safari booking. Build that into your plan for the 10:00 AM rush.
- Same-day cut-offs. The last online booking time is 6:30 AM for the morning session and 4:00 PM for the afternoon session.
- Book only on the official portal. Plenty of look-alike “Corbett booking” websites rank on Google. The only official one is linked in the sources below.
What this means for your trip
If you are going in the first half of October (1–14 October): your jeep safaris will be in Jhirna or Dhela. Both are proper tiger habitat and both run in October, but you will not be in Bijrani or Dhikala. This fits families and first-timers who mainly want a resort weekend near Ramnagar with one or two safaris. A Gandhi Jayanti long-weekend trip (2–4 October) falls in this window. We covered the other options for that weekend in our long weekend guide from Delhi.
If you are going from mid-October onwards (15 October to 14 November): Bijrani joins the list if it opens as scheduled, which gives you three or four zones to choose from. For most leisure travellers this is the best part of October: the forest is still green after the rains and the roads are drier.
If you want Dhikala: nothing before 15 November. For a night stay in the opening week, the 4 October booking window is your one real chance. If you miss it, look at the later check-in windows the reserve opens in batches, or settle for a Dhikala canter day trip.
If you are combining Corbett with Nainital or the hills: October is a good month for it. After a heavy monsoon, keep a buffer day in the plan and check the district administration’s road advisories the day before you drive up into the hills.
If you are a travel agent: treat the Bijrani and Dhikala dates as provisional in your quotes, build Jhirna or Dhela in as the fallback zone, and do not promise a Dhikala stay you have not booked. Our Uttarakhand DMC desk handles safari permits, Ramnagar hotels and transfers for B2B partners.
Suzu Travels is a ground operator, and we plan Corbett trips around the zone that is actually open on your dates rather than the one on the brochure. Our Den of Tigers Jim Corbett package is built that way. For a quote, call or WhatsApp 7087488961.
Beyond Corbett: where tiger safaris start on 1 October
If your dates are fixed in early October and you mainly want core-zone tiger country, the reserves that open today are the stronger choice. Ranthambore is the most accessible from Delhi and Jaipur, and it pairs easily with a Rajasthan circuit; see our Rajasthan tour packages. Ranthambore’s October–December advance quota opened on 1 August, so current-date and Tatkal slots are what is left for most people now. The Madhya Pradesh reserves (Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench) need more travel time, but core zones run from today. At Tadoba, Tatkal gypsy bookings open at 08:00, three days before the entry date.
For every reserve, book only on the state forest department’s official portal and carry the original photo ID you booked with.
FAQ: Jim Corbett and the October 2026 safari season
Is Jim Corbett open in October 2026?
Yes, partly. Jhirna and Dhela are open all year. Bijrani is scheduled to open on 15 October 2026. Dhikala, Durgadevi, Sonanadi and Pakhro stay closed until 15 November 2026. Garjia is listed as year-round but was held until 15 October last year, so check the official notice before you book it.
When does Dhikala open in 2026?
Dhikala’s season runs from 15 November to 15 June. Canter bookings for the opening dates went live on 1 October 2026, and night-stay booking for 15–21 November check-ins opens on 4 October 2026 at 10:00 AM.
Is October a good time to visit Jim Corbett?
For a relaxed trip, yes. The forest is green after the monsoon and the resorts around Ramnagar are open. For the widest choice of zones, go after 15 October, when Bijrani joins the year-round zones. If you specifically want Dhikala, wait until after 15 November.
Which tiger reserves open on 1 October 2026?
Ranthambore (Zones 1–5), Sariska, Tadoba-Andhari and the Madhya Pradesh reserves (Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Panna and Satpura) reopen their core zones on 1 October 2026. Gir is scheduled for 16 October and Indravati for 1 November.
Can I book a Corbett safari on the day?
Online booking closes at 6:30 AM for the morning session and 4:00 PM for the afternoon session, as long as permits are left. In season, and especially on long weekends, permits for the popular zones rarely last until the same day.
Do I need ID for a Corbett safari?
Yes. You upload an ID for every visitor at booking and show the same ID at the gate. A mismatch means you do not get in.
