Golden Triangle with Varanasi: 9–10 Day Itinerary and How to Connect

The Golden Triangle with Varanasi takes 9–10 days: Delhi (2 nights) → Agra (1) → Jaipur (2) → Varanasi (2–3) → Delhi. The easiest link is a nonstop Jaipur–Varanasi flight (about 1 h 40 min) on Day 6, then a flight or overnight train back to Delhi; or go Agra → Varanasi on the 06:00 Vande Bharat.

Short answer: The Golden Triangle with Varanasi takes 9–10 days: Delhi (2 nights) → Agra (1) → Jaipur (2) → Varanasi (2–3) → Delhi. The easiest connection is a nonstop flight from Jaipur to Varanasi (about 1 hour 40 minutes) on the morning of Day 6, then a flight or the overnight Shiv Ganga Express back to Delhi. If you prefer to go Agra → Varanasi, the 06:00 Vande Bharat reaches Banaras at 13:00; run the triangle as Delhi → Jaipur → Agra → Varanasi instead.

Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)

  • Route A (most common): Delhi → Agra → Jaipur → fly to Varanasi → fly or train to Delhi. 9 nights.
  • Route B (by train): Delhi → Jaipur → Agra → 20176 Vande Bharat Agra Cantt 06:00 → Banaras 13:00 (six days a week, erail) → Varanasi → Delhi. 9–10 nights.
  • Varanasi to Delhi: many daily flights (about 1 h 20 min) or the 12559 Shiv Ganga Express, which leaves Banaras in the evening and reaches New Delhi early the next morning, daily (its pair, the 12560, leaves New Delhi 20:05 and arrives Banaras 06:10, erail).
  • Two nights minimum in Varanasi: dawn boat ride, the evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, Sarnath 10 km away.
  • Dev Deepawali 2026 is Tuesday 24 November, when the ghats are lit with lakhs of lamps; book months ahead for that week.
  • Taj Mahal closed Fridays (ASI); plan the Agra day first and fit Varanasi around it.

Why add Varanasi to the Golden Triangle?

The Golden Triangle shows you Mughal and Rajput India: tombs, forts, palaces, the built heritage of empires. Varanasi shows you the living religion those empires ruled over. It is a city of 80-odd ghats stepping down to the Ganges, where pilgrims bathe at dawn, bodies are cremated in the open at Manikarnika, and every evening a choreographed fire ceremony is performed to the river at Dashashwamedh Ghat. For many of our international clients it is the most memorable stop of the whole trip, and the one that makes the Taj Mahal feel like a prelude rather than a finale.

The catch is geography. Varanasi is about 800 km east of Delhi and 850 km from Jaipur, on the far side of the triangle from Rajasthan. You cannot drive it sensibly. The question is therefore which corner of the triangle you leave from, and whether you fly or take the train. The sections below give both answers and a day-by-day plan for each.

How do you get from the Golden Triangle to Varanasi?

Connection How (checked 30 Oct 2026) Time Best for
Jaipur → Varanasi Nonstop flights (IndiGo operates the route; frequency varies by season, so check the day you want) about 1 h 40 min in the air The standard Route A; leave Jaipur after breakfast, boat on the Ganges at sunset
Agra → Varanasi 20176 Vande Bharat, Agra Cantt 06:00 → Banaras (BNRS) 13:00, via Kanpur and Prayagraj; runs six days a week (erail / ConfirmTkt) 7 h Route B; train lovers; no airport time
Delhi → Varanasi 22436 Vande Bharat, New Delhi 06:00 → Varanasi Jn 14:00, not Thursdays; or flights all day 8 h train / 1 h 20 min flight Doing Varanasi first, before the triangle
Varanasi → Delhi Flights all day (IndiGo, Air India and others); 12559 Shiv Ganga Express overnight, arriving New Delhi early morning, daily 1 h 20 min flight / about 10 h train Getting back for an international departure

Train times are from the erail and ConfirmTkt timetables on 30 October 2026; Indian Railways revises them a few times a year, so confirm on your ticket. Note that the Vande Bharat from Agra ends at Banaras station (the old Manduadih), which is about 4 km from the ghats, not at Varanasi Junction. Our Delhi to Varanasi guide covers the Delhi options in more detail, including how to book the Foreign Tourist Quota.

Route A: Delhi → Agra → Jaipur → Varanasi by air (9 nights)

This is the version we run most often, because it keeps the triangle in its natural order and uses a single short flight for the long hop east.

  • Day 1, Delhi: arrive, rest, an evening in Connaught Place or Khan Market. Night Delhi.
  • Day 2, Delhi: Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk in the morning, Humayun’s Tomb and Qutub Minar in the afternoon. Night Delhi.
  • Day 3, Delhi → Agra (230 km): 06:00 Shatabdi or car on the Yamuna Expressway; Agra Fort; sunset at Mehtab Bagh or inside the Taj. Night Agra.
  • Day 4, Agra → Jaipur (240 km): Taj Mahal at opening (see our Taj sunrise guide); Fatehpur Sikri; Abhaneri stepwell; arrive Jaipur evening. Night Jaipur.
  • Day 5, Jaipur: Amer Fort at 08:00, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, bazaars, Nahargarh at sunset. Night Jaipur.
  • Day 6, Jaipur → Varanasi: morning or midday flight; check in near the ghats (Assi or the lanes behind Dashashwamedh); sunset boat ride; evening Ganga aarti. Night Varanasi.
  • Day 7, Varanasi: dawn boat along the ghats; walk the lanes to the Kashi Vishwanath corridor; afternoon at Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, 10 km away. Night Varanasi.
  • Day 8, Varanasi: a free morning (silk weavers in the Muslim quarter, a cooking class, or nothing at all), then the afternoon flight to Delhi; or stay a third night and take the overnight train. Night Delhi.
  • Day 9, Delhi: depart, or a last morning at Lodhi Garden and the National Museum.

Our Varanasi trip guide covers where to stay on the ghats and how the boat rides work, and the Ganga aarti guide explains the evening ceremony: it starts around sunset, roughly 18:00 in winter and 19:00 in summer, and lasts about 45 minutes; arrive an hour early for a spot on the steps or book a boat to watch from the water.

Route B: Delhi → Jaipur → Agra → Varanasi by train (10 nights)

If you would rather not fly inside India, reverse the triangle so that Agra comes last, then take the 06:00 Vande Bharat east. The train runs through the Gangetic plain via Kanpur and Prayagraj, where the Ganges and Yamuna meet, and is in Banaras by 13:00. The early start means an Agra hotel near Agra Cantt station and the Taj on the previous morning.

  • Days 1–2, Delhi: as Route A.
  • Day 3, Delhi → Jaipur (270–280 km): the 06:10 Ajmer Shatabdi (arrives 10:35) or car; afternoon at the City Palace and Jantar Mantar. Night Jaipur. Our Delhi to Jaipur guide has the full list of trains.
  • Day 4, Jaipur: Amer, Jaigarh, bazaars, Nahargarh sunset. Night Jaipur.
  • Day 5, Jaipur → Agra (240 km): drive via Abhaneri and Fatehpur Sikri; sunset at Mehtab Bagh. Night Agra.
  • Day 6, Agra: Taj at sunrise, Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah, an early night. Night Agra.
  • Day 7, Agra → Varanasi: 20176 Vande Bharat 06:00 → 13:00; afternoon rest; evening aarti. Night Varanasi.
  • Days 8–9, Varanasi: dawn boat, lanes, Sarnath, silk, a second aarti from a boat. Nights Varanasi.
  • Day 10, Varanasi → Delhi: morning flight for a same-day international departure, or the overnight Shiv Ganga for a Delhi arrival on Day 11.

Route B costs about the same as Route A once you add the extra hotel night, and it suits travellers who want more of Agra. Check the Vande Bharat’s running day for your date: the timetables we checked show it running six days a week but disagree on which day it skips, so confirm when booking.

Can you do Varanasi first, then the Golden Triangle?

Yes, and it has one strong argument: you arrive in Varanasi fresh, before India has worn you down, and finish at the Taj Mahal, which is what most people want in their last photographs. Fly Delhi → Varanasi on the morning after you land (flights are frequent and about 1 hour 20 minutes), spend two or three nights, then fly to Delhi or Jaipur and run the triangle in whichever direction keeps the Taj off a Friday. The 22436 Vande Bharat from New Delhi at 06:00 (not Thursdays) is the train alternative, arriving at 14:00.

The one thing to avoid is arriving in Varanasi late at night after a long international flight and going straight to the dawn boat; give yourself one quiet evening first. If you are extending beyond ten days, our two-week India itinerary adds Khajuraho between Agra and Varanasi, and our 10-day India itinerary compares the Varanasi extension with a Rajasthan one.

What should you know before Varanasi?

Varanasi is intense in a way the triangle is not. The lanes behind the ghats are narrow, crowded, shared with cows and motorbikes, and dirty in places; the cremation ghats are public and photography there is forbidden; touts around Dashashwamedh are persistent. None of this is dangerous, but it helps to have a guide for the first morning and a hotel within walking distance of the river so you are not negotiating rickshaws at 05:00. Most of our clients stay around Assi Ghat, the quieter southern end, or in a heritage haveli on the central ghats.

Health is the other consideration. Do not swim in or drink from the Ganges, eat at busy places, and carry oral rehydration salts; our guide to food and water safety in India has the rules we give every client. For the spiritual and cultural background, our Varanasi spiritual and cultural guide explains what you are watching at the aarti and the ghats.

When is the best time for the Golden Triangle with Varanasi?

October to March, the same as the triangle, with two Varanasi-specific notes. Dev Deepawali, fifteen days after Diwali on the Kartik full moon, falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026; the ghats are lit with hundreds of thousands of lamps and the city is full, so book six months ahead for that week or avoid it. Winter fog on the Gangetic plain can delay flights and trains from late December to mid-January, in Varanasi even more than in Delhi, so allow a buffer day before your international flight home. Our month-by-month Golden Triangle guide covers the rest of the year.

What does the Varanasi extension cost?

Adding two nights in Varanasi to a mid-range Golden Triangle trip typically adds about ₹25,000–₹40,000 per person (roughly US$260–420) for two sharing: a one-way domestic flight of about ₹5,000–₹9,000 depending on how far ahead you book, two nights in a good ghat-side hotel, a guide for the first morning, two boat rides and the flight or train back to Delhi. The Golden Triangle cost guide gives the base figures the extension sits on. Booking with us works the same way as any package: a 20% token confirms, refundable in full within 48 hours of paying, with international cards accepted via Razorpay and PayPal.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for the Golden Triangle with Varanasi?

Nine to ten nights. Allow two in Delhi, one in Agra, two in Jaipur and two or three in Varanasi, with a flight from Jaipur to Varanasi and a flight or overnight train back to Delhi. Eight nights is possible if you cut Delhi to one and Varanasi to two, but it feels rushed.

What is the best way from Jaipur to Varanasi?

A nonstop flight, about 1 hour 40 minutes in the air; IndiGo operates the route, with frequency varying by season. There is no practical train, as the rail journey involves a change and takes most of a day. Fly in the morning so you reach the ghats in time for the evening aarti.

Is there a train from Agra to Varanasi?

Yes. The 20176 Vande Bharat Express leaves Agra Cantt at 06:00 and reaches Banaras station at 13:00, stopping at Tundla, Etawah, Kanpur and Prayagraj (erail and ConfirmTkt timetables, checked 30 October 2026). It runs six days a week; confirm the non-running day when you book. Banaras station is about 4 km from the main ghats.

Should I visit Varanasi before or after the Golden Triangle?

Either works. After is more common, because flights from Jaipur make it easy and Varanasi is the emotional high point. Before has the advantage of finishing at the Taj Mahal and arriving at the ghats fresh. Choose whichever order keeps your Agra morning off a Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed.

How many nights in Varanasi are enough?

Two is the minimum: it gives you one evening aarti, one dawn boat ride, a walk through the lanes and an afternoon at Sarnath. Three nights lets you take a second boat trip, visit the silk weavers and have a morning with nothing planned, which in Varanasi is often the best morning of the trip.

When is Dev Deepawali in Varanasi in 2026?

Tuesday 24 November 2026, on the Kartik full moon, fifteen days after Diwali. The ghats are lit with hundreds of thousands of oil lamps and the city is extremely crowded. Book hotels and flights many months ahead if you want to be there, or avoid that week if you prefer a quieter Varanasi.
