Short answer: the Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise every day except Friday, so the first visitors walk in at about 06:00 in November, 06:30 in December–January and 05:00 in May–June. To be at the front of the queue, stay the night in Agra, be at the East or West Gate ticket window about an hour before sunrise, and book the foreigner ticket online the evening before.
Quick answer
- Gates open: 30 minutes before sunrise; closed all day Friday (tajmahal.gov.in, checked 20 October 2026).
- Which gate: East Gate or West Gate. The South Gate is exit only.
- Foreigner ticket: ₹1,100, plus ₹200 if you want to go inside the main mausoleum (₹1,300 total, about US$14 at roughly ₹95 to the dollar in mid-October 2026). Children under 15 are free.

What time does the Taj Mahal open for sunrise?
The official Taj Mahal website says the monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, and ticket windows at the East and West Gates open one hour before sunrise. Sunrise in Agra moves by almost two hours over the year, so the opening time does too. The table below uses sunrise times we calculated for Agra (27.18° N, 78.04° E) for the 15th of each month; the actual time shifts by a minute or two each day.
| Month | Sunrise (approx.) | Gates open (approx.) | What the morning is usually like |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 07:09 | 06:39 | Cold; dense fog on many mornings, sometimes until late morning |
| February | 06:55 | 06:25 | Fog thins out; crisp, often clear |
| March | 06:28 | 05:58 | Mild and usually clear; good light |
| April | 05:54 | 05:24 | Warm by 08:00; hazy days begin |
| May | 05:30 | 05:00 | Very hot later in the day; sunrise is the only comfortable time |
| June | 05:23 | 04:53 | Hot and hazy; earliest opening of the year |
| July | 05:32 | 05:02 | Monsoon: cloud cover, humid; reflections after rain |
| August | 05:48 | 05:18 | Monsoon: mixed, lush gardens |
| September | 06:03 | 05:33 | Humid, clearing as the monsoon ends |
| October | 06:17 | 05:47 | Pleasant; one of the best months |
| November | 06:37 | 06:07 | Cool and dry; smog can soften the light some mornings |
| December | 06:59 | 06:29 | Cold; fog becomes likely from mid-month |
Times are India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30). Use them to set your alarm, not to plan to the minute: check the sunrise time for your exact date the night before.
Is the Taj Mahal at sunrise worth it?
For most visitors, yes. The first hour is the coolest and quietest part of the day, the marble changes from grey to pink to white as the sun comes up, and the long reflecting pool is often still. By 09:00 the queues at both ticket gates are long and the main platform is crowded, especially on weekends and Indian public holidays. The trade-off is an early alarm (around 04:30–05:30 depending on the month) and the chance of fog in winter. If you only have one visit, sunrise on a clear morning is the version people remember.
Which gate is best for sunrise: East, West or South?
Only two gates let you in. The official site lists the Western Gate (near Saheli Burj) and the Eastern Gate as entry and ticket gates; the Southern Gate is exit only. Foreign visitors and Indian visitors queue separately, and the foreigner queue is usually shorter.
- East Gate: most sunrise visitors use it because many of Agra’s hotels sit on the eastern side, close to Shilpgram, where cars park. Cars cannot drive to the gate: petrol and diesel vehicles stop outside the 500-metre low-pollution zone and an electric cart or battery bus covers the last stretch.
- West Gate: closer to the old city and Agra Fort. Good if your hotel is on that side; it often gets busier later in the morning with large groups.
Whichever you use, plan to reach the gate about an hour before sunrise, so you are through security when the doors open. Your driver will know the drop-off point for each gate.
How much is the Taj Mahal ticket for foreigners, and where do you buy it?
On the official site (checked 20 October 2026), foreign tourists pay ₹1,100, citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC countries pay ₹540, and Indian citizens and OCI cardholders pay ₹50. Entry to the main mausoleum, where the cenotaphs are, costs an extra ₹200 for everyone. Children under 15 enter free. Booking online saves ₹50 on a foreigner ticket and, more usefully at sunrise, lets you skip the ticket window and go straight to security.
Buy tickets on the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) portal, asi.paygov.org.in, which is the site the official Taj page points to. Book the evening before, keep the QR code on your phone and carry your passport. Ignore touts outside the gates offering “fast-track” tickets: there is no such official ticket. Prices change, so confirm on the official site before you travel.
The ticket also includes shoe covers for the marble platform and a small bottle of water. Since 2019, a visit has been limited to three hours, and Lonely Planet reported that visitors who stay longer are charged again at the exit. Three hours is plenty for a sunrise visit.
What can you take inside?
Security is airport-style and the list of banned items is longer than most visitors expect. The official “Do’s and Don’ts” page bans tripods, drones, food (even sweets), tobacco, headphones, phone chargers, knives and electrical goods other than a camera. Phones are allowed but must be on silent, and photography is not allowed inside the main mausoleum. Large bags slow down the check, so leave them in the car or hotel. Bring:
- Your passport (or a clear photo of it plus the original) and the e-ticket QR code
- A camera or phone, with a spare battery in your pocket rather than a power bank
- A warm layer from November to February: it is cold at 06:00
- Small cash in rupees for a guide or tips
What about winter fog?
Fog is the main risk for a sunrise visit from mid-December to late January. On some mornings the dome is barely visible from the gate; on 6 January 2026, for example, Amar Ujala reported visibility near zero at the Taj. Fog usually lifts during the morning, so in winter do not leave Agra straight after sunrise. Keep the morning free: if the first hour is grey, stay inside and wait, because fog often lifts within the three hours a ticket allows. The fog also makes the Delhi–Agra drive slower and less safe in the dark, which is one more reason to spend the night in Agra. Our private car with driver plans in winter allow extra time for this.
Can you do sunrise as a day trip from Delhi?
You can, but we rarely recommend it. Agra is 204 km (127 miles) from Delhi on the Yamuna Expressway, about 3.5–4 hours by car. To reach the gate an hour before a December sunrise, you would leave Delhi at about 02:00, and the UK Foreign Office advises visitors to avoid travelling at night and in fog. The morning trains from Delhi arrive in Agra after sunrise. The calmer plan is to drive (a Delhi to Agra taxi takes about four hours on the expressway) or take the train the afternoon before, see Agra Fort or the sunset from Mehtab Bagh, sleep in Agra and walk in at opening time. Our Taj Mahal tour from Delhi page lays out the same-day and overnight options side by side. If you are going on to Jaipur, the overnight in Agra fits naturally into a Golden Triangle tour.
Is there anywhere else to see the Taj at dawn or at night?
Mehtab Bagh, a Mughal garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna, faces the Taj directly. The Agra district website lists it as open sunrise to sunset, with a ₹300 ticket for foreign nationals, and calls it the best place to photograph the Taj, especially at sunset. It is a good second view, not a substitute for going inside.
Night viewing runs on the full-moon night and the two nights before and after it, from 20:00 to midnight, in eight 30-minute slots of up to 50 people. The official site lists a foreign adult ticket at ₹750. You report to Shilpgram, near the East Gate, 30 minutes before your slot, phones are not allowed and you view the Taj from a distance. Night viewing is closed on Fridays and during Ramadan, and slots sell out, so book on the ASI portal as soon as your dates are fixed.
What this means for your trip
Build one night in Agra into your plan, avoid Fridays, book the ticket online the night before and aim to be at the East or West Gate an hour before sunrise. If you travel between mid-December and January, keep the morning flexible for fog. If India is new to you, our two-week India itinerary shows how Agra fits between Delhi, Jaipur and the Himalayan hill towns, and the India tours page lists all our private routes for international travellers.
Frequently asked questions
What time should I arrive at the Taj Mahal for sunrise?
Arrive at the East or West Gate about an hour before sunrise, when the ticket windows open. The gates themselves open 30 minutes before sunrise. In November that means arriving around 05:35; in December and January around 06:00; in May and June around 04:25. With an online ticket you can join the security queue directly, which saves 15–30 minutes on busy days.
Is the Taj Mahal open on Friday at sunrise?
No. The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors all day every Friday, including sunrise, and night viewing is also closed on Fridays. Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh are open on Fridays, so if you arrive in Agra on a Thursday, plan the Taj for Saturday morning or go on Thursday afternoon.
Do I need to book Taj Mahal sunrise tickets in advance?
You don’t have to, because ticket windows open an hour before sunrise, but booking online on the ASI portal (asi.paygov.org.in) the evening before is better. It saves ₹50 on the foreigner ticket and lets you skip the ticket queue. Remember to add the ₹200 mausoleum ticket if you want to go inside the tomb itself. Carry the passport you booked with.
Is East Gate or West Gate better for sunrise?
Both open at the same time and lead to the same forecourt and view. Choose the one nearer your hotel. Most sunrise visitors use the East Gate because many hotels and the Shilpgram parking area are on that side. The South Gate is exit only. Petrol and diesel cars stop outside the 500-metre zone and electric carts take you the rest of the way.
Can I take a tripod or drone to the Taj Mahal?
No. Tripods and drones are on the official list of banned items, along with food, chargers, headphones and tobacco. Handheld cameras and phones are allowed. Photography is allowed in the gardens and on the platform but not inside the main mausoleum. Security will confiscate banned items or send you back, so leave them in the car.
Will fog ruin a winter sunrise at the Taj Mahal?
Sometimes. From mid-December to late January, dense fog is common in the early morning on the plains around Agra and can hide the dome for hours. It usually lifts later in the morning. Stay flexible: keep the whole morning in Agra, and if sunrise is grey, wait inside rather than leaving straight away. Fog often lifts within the three hours a ticket allows.
