Varanasi Trip Guide
Two or three days on the Ganga, done respectfully.
Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, by tradition, and a sacred city of Hinduism on the Ganga. Here is an honest plan for two or three days — the sunrise boat, the evening aarti, the temple rules, the cremation ghats, Sarnath, and when not to go — written by a travel company based in the Himalaya.
- 2–3 days enough for a first visit
- Ganga Aarti every evening at dusk
- Sarnath UNESCO World Heritage, July 2026
- Oct–Mar the best months
How should I plan a Varanasi trip?
Plan 2–3 days in Varanasi: a sunrise boat on the Ganga, the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat (about 45 minutes, at dusk), Kashi Vishwanath Temple (no phones, gadgets or even pens — free lockers) and Sarnath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2026. Go October to March; avoid the July–September floods. Fly from Delhi; Suzu Travels arranges it with the Golden Triangle.

A 2- or 3-day Varanasi plan
Two full days cover the river, the aarti, the temple and Sarnath. A third day lets you do it all at an easier pace — and Varanasi rewards a slow pace.
Many visitors add Varanasi after the Golden Triangle: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur by car, then a flight to Varanasi for two or three days.
| When | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 (optional) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | Arrive at Varanasi airport (VNS); settle in near the ghats | Sunrise boat on the Ganga past the ghats | Sarnath at an easy pace, with the museum |
| Afternoon | Walk the ghats from Assi Ghat with a local guide | Kashi Vishwanath Temple (leave your phone in a free locker) and the old lanes | Ramnagar Fort or Bharat Kala Bhavan, or simply the ghats again |
| Evening | Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, at dusk | Aarti from a boat on the river, or a quiet ghat | Fly or take the train back to Delhi |
Opening hours of Sarnath, its museum and Ramnagar Fort change — we confirm them for your dates. Confirm before travel.
What to see in Varanasi
The places that make a first Varanasi trip, from the Incredible India (Ministry of Tourism) guide:
Dashashwamedh Ghat and the Ganga Aarti
The main ghat, open day and night. The evening Ganga Aarti here lasts forty-five minutes at dusk, around sunset — lamps, bells and chants from a row of priests. Arrive early for a place on the steps, or watch from a boat. Our Ganga Aarti guide has more.
A sunrise boat on the Ganga
The river at first light, with pilgrims bathing and praying on the ghats.
Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The great Shiva temple near Dashashwamedh Ghat. Strict rules on what you can carry — see below.
Assi Ghat
Another of the ghats listed by Incredible India — a good place to start a walk along the river.
Sarnath
Where the Buddha gave his first sermon, a short drive from the ghats. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2026 — see below.
Ramnagar Fort and Bharat Kala Bhavan
Ramnagar Fort, the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum and the New Vishwanath Temple — for an afternoon away from the ghats.
Sarnath: India's newest UNESCO World Heritage Site
On the evening of 25 July 2026 the World Heritage Committee, meeting in Busan, inscribed the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath on the World Heritage List — India’s 45th World Heritage property (Press Information Bureau, 26 August 2026).
The first sermon
Sarnath is where the Buddha gave his first sermon after his enlightenment — the ‘Turning of the Wheel of the Law’.
What is protected
The Chaukhandi Stupa and the archaeological remains of Sarnath: the Dhamek Stupa, the Dharmarajika Stupa, the Mulagandhakuti Vihara and the Ashokan Pillar — monuments from the 4th–3rd century BCE to the 12th century CE.
The Lion Capital
The Ashokan Lion Capital found at Sarnath became India’s National Emblem. It is in the Sarnath Museum, founded in 1904 — India’s earliest site museum.
How long
Half a day is enough for the stupa park and the museum. We plan it for the morning, before the afternoon heat.
Temple rules and cremation-ghat etiquette
Kashi Vishwanath Temple: “Any electronic or non-electronic gadgets, pen etc. is not allowed inside the temple premises” (Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust FAQ, checked 28 Oct 2026). Free lockers are at Mandir Chauk, YSK-1/2/3 and the Helpdesk. There is no dress code, but the trust asks for decent clothes. Darshan runs 04:00–11:00, 12:20–19:00 and 20:30–21:00. Visitors of all faiths come; rules can change — ask at the helpdesk.
Cremation ghats: Manikarnika and Harishchandra are working cremation grounds. Watch quietly from a distance, don’t photograph funerals, and decline anyone who ‘guides’ you in and then asks for money for wood.
The temple also holds ticketed aartis — the Mangla Aarti at 03:00–04:00 (report at 02:30 at Gate 1), the Sapta-Rishi Aarti at 19:00–20:15 and the Shringar Aarti at 21:00–22:15. Booked aarti tickets are non-refundable. A paid ‘Sugam Darshan’ with a temple Shastri is offered too.
Best time for a Varanasi trip — and when not to go
Varanasi gets very hot before the monsoon. Monthly ranges from Incredible India: January 4.5–27.9 °C (40–82 °F), May 20.8–45.2 °C (69–113 °F).
| Months | What it's like | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| October–March | Cool to warm days, cold mornings in December and January | The best months. Bring a warm layer for the sunrise boat |
| 24 November 2026 | Dev Deepawali — the ghats lit with thousands of diyas, fifteen days after Diwali (Kartik Purnima) | A beautiful night, and a crowded one: book early |
| April–June | Very hot; May can reach 45 °C (113 °F) | Possible with early mornings and late evenings only |
| July–September | Monsoon floods: the Ganga has risen above the danger mark, ghats were under water, aarti moved to rooftops (Aug 2025) and boat services were halted (Aug 2026) | We don’t recommend it for a first visit |
Winter also brings poor air to North Indian cities (UK FCDO, October–February). Holi (23 March 2027) is also celebrated in Varanasi; see our Holi guide for Mathura and Vrindavan.
How to get to Varanasi from Delhi and the Golden Triangle
Varanasi is far east of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, so many guests fly in and out. Our Delhi to Varanasi guide compares the options.
- By airLal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) is Varanasi’s airport, and it is on the e-Visa list of designated entry airports — so you can even start your India trip here.
- By trainVaranasi Junction (BSB) is the main station. India’s first Vande Bharat Express (2019) runs between Delhi and Varanasi; check current times and book on IRCTC.
- From the Golden TriangleDo Delhi, Agra and Jaipur by private car first, then fly to Varanasi from Delhi. Our 5- and 7-day Golden Triangle itinerary gives the order.
- In VaranasiYour local team meets you at the airport or station. The old city is best on foot and by boat; a car takes you to Sarnath.

International flights, visa and tips.
Before you go: visa, safety and health
You need an Indian visa before you fly. Apply only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware of look-alike sites that charge extra. We are not a visa agency. See our India e-Visa guide.
Touts: the UK Foreign Office advises “Be cautious in tourist areas, where scammers, pickpockets and ticket touts target foreign nationals” and to “avoid people at railway stations offering tickets and tours” (advice updated 7 October 2026). In Varanasi that means boat and ‘guide’ offers on the ghats — agree prices before you start, or let your arranged guide handle it.
Health: Winter air can be poor in North Indian cities — if you have asthma or a heart or lung condition, ask your doctor and see NHS Fit for Travel or the CDC. We don’t recommend swimming in the Ganga; consult official health sites.
Prices
A Varanasi trip is quoted on request — the number of days, the hotel level, flights and group size change the total. You get a day-by-day plan with a US-dollar total before you pay anything. Many guests do the Golden Triangle first, which has published prices:
