Short answer (checked 22 October 2026): the Wagah border ceremony — officially the Beating Retreat at the Attari–Wagah border, 28–30 km west of Amritsar — now runs 5:00 to 5:30 pm daily, after the Border Security Force moved it 30 minutes earlier from 16 October 2026. Entry is free. Carry your passport, leave every bag behind, and be at the border by about 3:00 pm to get through security and find a seat.

Quick answer

  • Where: Attari village on the old Grand Trunk Road, India’s side of the only road crossing with Pakistan in Punjab; about 45 minutes by car from central Amritsar.
  • When: every evening, 5:00–5:30 pm from 16 October 2026 (UNI, 15 Oct 2026). The slot moves with sunset several times a year.
  • Cost: free. Anyone selling a “VIP ticket” is selling transport or a tour, not an official seat.
  • Bring: passport (foreign visitors are usually seated in a separate gallery), phone/camera, a little cash. No bags, no large water bottles, no food.
  • Arrive: by 3:00 pm, as officials advise (UNI, February 2026). Weekends and holidays fill first.
  • Since May 2025: the Indian side keeps the gates shut and the handshake with Pakistan Rangers is dropped; the flags are still lowered together.

What is the Wagah border ceremony?

Every evening, soldiers of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and the Pakistan Rangers lower their national flags at the joint check post near Border Pillar No. 102 on the old Grand Trunk Road. Indians call it the Attari border ceremony, after the village on this side; Pakistanis call it Wagah, after the village on theirs. Both names mean the same 30 minutes.

According to India’s official tourism site, Incredible India, the ritual began in 1959. What you watch is a parade of high-kicking, fast-marching guards in fan-crested turbans, a bugle call, and the two flags coming down in unison as the light goes. Thousands of spectators sit in tiered stands on the Indian side, and the build-up — music, flag-running along the road, chanting — starts well before the drill itself.

It is loud, patriotic and theatrical. Some visitors love the energy; others find the nationalism uncomfortable. Both reactions are normal. Go knowing it is a military ceremony staged for a crowd, not a quiet memorial.

What time is the Wagah border ceremony in 2026?

As of 22 October 2026 the ceremony runs 5:00–5:30 pm. The BSF advanced it from 5:30–6:00 pm with effect from Friday 16 October “in view of changing weather conditions”, UNI reported on 15 October 2026. The time follows sunset, so it changes several times a year. This is how 2026 has gone so far, from news reports:

Period (2026) Ceremony time Source
Early winter to 15 Feb 4:30–5:00 pm UNI, Feb 2026 (the “earlier” slot)
From 16 Feb 5:00–5:30 pm UNI, Feb 2026
From 1 May (summer) 6:00–6:30 pm The Tribune, May 2026
Late Sept to 15 Oct 5:30–6:00 pm UNI, 15 Oct 2026 (the “earlier” slot)
From 16 Oct (now) 5:00–5:30 pm UNI, 15 Oct 2026
December–January Likely 4:30–5:00 pm again Pattern only — not yet announced

The pattern is clear: earliest in deep winter, latest in May–August. Changes are announced only a day or two ahead, so ask your hotel or driver the day before you go. India’s tourist helpline 1363 can also help.

How early should you arrive, and how long does it take?

Officials ask visitors, Indian and foreign, to reach the border area by 3:00 pm for a 5:00 pm ceremony (UNI, February 2026). That covers the walk from the parking area, the security check and finding a seat in stands that can fill an hour before the drill. On weekends, Indian public holidays and around 26 January and 15 August, go earlier still.

Budget about five hours from Amritsar: leave the city around 1:30–2:00 pm, spend roughly two hours at the border, and expect a slow 45–60 minutes back once the crowd empties out at the same moment. You will be back in Amritsar between 7:00 and 8:00 pm — in time to see the Golden Temple lit up at night.

Do foreigners need a ticket or a passport?

There is no ticket and no fee. Foreign visitors are generally waved into a separate gallery closer to the gate after showing their original passport, so keep it on you, not in the car. A photocopy or a phone photo may not be accepted. Indian visitors carry a photo ID.

In January 2023 the BSF launched a free online booking portal, attari.bsf.gov.in, for groups of up to 12, booked at least 48 hours ahead with photo ID details (Kashmir Reader/PTI, December 2022). We could not load it on 22 October 2026, and most visitors still simply walk in, so don’t count on it. Ignore third-party sites selling “VIP passes”: they sell a car or a guide.

What can you take inside?

  • Allowed: phone, camera, passport, wallet, sunglasses, a light jacket (October–February evenings get cool quickly).
  • Not allowed: bags of any kind — backpacks, handbags, camera bags — plus food and large bottles. There are lockers near the entrance but long queues; leaving everything in your locked car is simpler.
  • Dress: no dress code. Comfortable shoes help — it is a walk of several hundred metres from parking to the stands.
  • Toilets: basic, and busy just before the start. Use one in Amritsar before you leave.

Is the ceremony different since 2025?

Yes. After the Pahalgam attack in April 2025, the BSF scaled the ceremony down at Attari and two other Punjab border posts: the gates stay closed during the drill and the handshake between the Indian and Pakistani commanders was dropped (The Tribune, 25 April 2025). The ceremony was suspended for spectators for about 12 days in May 2025 and resumed on 20 May 2025 in that reduced format (SGT Times, 20 May 2025).

We found no report of the full format returning as of 22 October 2026. The marching, the crowd and the joint flag-lowering are still there, so it is still worth seeing — just don’t expect the famous moment where the gates swing open and the commanders shake hands. Very occasionally the ceremony is suspended for public viewing at short notice for security reasons; a local driver will hear first.

How do you get to the Attari border from Amritsar?

Attari is about 28–30 km west of the Golden Temple on National Highway 3 (the old GT Road). There is no useful train or bus for visitors timed to the ceremony, so your realistic options are:

  • Private car with driver — the easiest choice. The driver waits while you watch, keeps your bags locked in the car and gets you out of the post-ceremony traffic. Our Amritsar taxi service runs the Wagah evening trip with airport and Golden Temple pickups.
  • Shared jeep or minibus — sold by hotels and touts around the Golden Temple. Cheap and sociable, but you leave when the vehicle fills and there’s nowhere safe to keep a bag.
  • App cab one way — easy to get there; finding a return car afterwards is hard. Agree a return booking before you go.

Coming from Delhi? Our guide to Delhi to Amritsar for international travellers compares the Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, flights and a car. An early train or a morning flight still gets you to Attari on the same day.

How does Wagah fit into an India itinerary?

Most international visitors give Amritsar one or two nights: Golden Temple early morning or at night, Jallianwala Bagh and the old city on foot, Wagah at dusk. From Amritsar the Himalaya is close — Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj are about five to six hours by road, and Dalhousie a little less (see our Dalhousie and Khajjiar guide).

A common route is Delhi → Amritsar → Dharamshala → Manali or Shimla → Delhi. Our India two-week itinerary shows where Amritsar fits after the Golden Triangle. If you’d rather not handle trains and transfers yourself, a private driver in India can take you from Delhi through Punjab into the hills on one booking.

Best time of year to watch the ceremony

October to March is the most comfortable: dry, mild afternoons and an earlier finish. In January, Amritsar’s lows drop to around 0°C and fog can delay flights and trains, so leave slack in your plans. May and June are brutal — Incredible India lists June highs up to about 44°C — and you will sit in open stands in direct sun for two hours. July–September brings monsoon showers but smaller crowds, except around 15 August.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the Wagah border ceremony start today?

From 16 October 2026 the ceremony runs 5:00–5:30 pm, according to the BSF announcement reported by UNI on 15 October 2026. Arrive by about 3:00 pm. The time moves with sunset — it is likely to move earlier again around December — so confirm with your hotel or driver the day before.

Is the Wagah border ceremony free?

Yes. There is no entry fee and no official paid VIP seat. Foreign visitors are usually seated in a separate gallery after showing a passport. Websites selling “Wagah VIP passes” are selling transport or a guided tour, not an official ticket.

Do I need my passport for the Wagah border ceremony?

Yes, carry your original passport if you are a foreign national. It is checked at security and is usually how you get into the foreigners’ gallery. A photocopy or phone photo may be refused. Indian visitors should carry a government photo ID.

Can I take a bag to the Attari border?

No. Bags of all kinds are refused at security, along with food and large water bottles. Phones and cameras are fine. Lockers exist but queues are long, which is one reason most visitors go by private car and leave their things locked inside.

Do the soldiers still shake hands and open the gates?

Not since April 2025. India scaled the ceremony down after the Pahalgam attack: the gates stay closed and the handshake with the Pakistan Rangers is suspended. The parade and the joint flag-lowering continue. We found no report of the full format returning as of 22 October 2026.

How far is Wagah border from the Golden Temple?

About 28–30 km, roughly 45 minutes by car each way on the old Grand Trunk Road, longer when the crowd leaves after the ceremony. Plan about five hours door to door, leaving Amritsar by 2:00 pm.

Is the Wagah border ceremony safe for tourists?

The site is run by the BSF with heavy security and is visited by thousands of people every day, including many foreigners. The main hassles are crowds, heat, pickpockets and getting a ride back. Keep valuables close, follow BSF instructions, and remember the ceremony can be suspended at short notice when border tension rises.
