Your ropeway day

How a ropeway fits your day

  1. Tell us your route

Shimla, Dharamshala–McLeodganj, Manali–Solang, the Kalka–Shimla highway or Naina Devi — and your dates.

  2. We check that week

Running status and any weather or district (DDMA) advisory for your ropeway.

  3. Cab to the lower station

We drop you early, before the queues and the afternoon wind.

  4. Ticket at the counter

Bought at the station (or the operator’s own online booking where it exists).

  5. Ride up

Your driver meets you at the top or the bottom as planned — on the Skyway a McLeodganj pick-up saves the hill drive.

  6. Carry on with the day

Triund or McLeodganj, Jakhu temple and the Ridge, Solang snow, or Kasauli.

Who it suits, and what to carry

Elders, small kids and anyone with vertigo find the short rides easiest — Jakhu and the Skyway take about five minutes. Solang’s top is around 3,200 m, so carry a warm layer even in summer.

Follow the cabin capacity and staff instructions, and keep a road-drive backup for the same slot in case wind stops the ride.

When to go

Himachal ropeways by month

Months Ropeways What to expect
Dec – Feb All, weather allowing Snow views at Solang and Jakhu; rides stop after heavy snow or high wind
Mar – Jun All Peak queues in May–June — go early and avoid weekends
Jul – Sep Weather-dependent Monsoon rain, wind and landslide stops (the Dharamshala Skyway was suspended on 20–21 Aug 2025)
Oct – Nov All Clear skies and short queues — the best time to ride

Weekends, Christmas–New Year and May–June are the busiest — a weekday morning means a shorter queue.

Safety

What we check before your ride

Suzu Travels is an HP Tourism registered travel agent (Reg. No. DTO-MND-11-243/2022). We plan your ride around these checks:

  • State inspectionRopeways in Himachal are checked by the state PWD Ropeways wing; daily checks, maintenance and rescue rehearsals were reviewed after the June 2022 Timber Trail incident.
  • Clearance before reopeningA ropeway reopens only after clearance — Timber Trail restarted on 7 Oct 2022 after an IIT Roorkee audit.
  • District ordersThe DC / DDMA can suspend a ropeway at any time, as in Dharamshala in Aug 2025 — we re-check on the morning of your ride.
  • Weather stopsWind, lightning and heavy snow stop rides. We keep a road-drive backup for the same slot.
  • Cabin rulesFollow the cabin capacity and staff instructions, and watch the evacuation briefing where one is played at boarding.
  • Kids and eldersShort rides suit them best; no age rule applies to ropeways in our sources, but the staff decide on the day.
