How Far Is Manali from Delhi and How Long Does It Take?
Delhi to Manali is about 540 km by road. Since the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane opened on the Chandigarh–Mandi stretch, buses that used to take 12 hours or more now do the run in roughly 10 hours in good conditions; allow 10–12 hours in a car with meal stops and 12–13 hours on an overnight Volvo, which also has to cross Mandi and the single-lane stretches of the Kullu valley at night.
For a 3-day trip the practical pattern is to travel both ways overnight: leave Delhi between 6 and 10 pm, reach Manali early the next morning, and board the return bus on the evening of Day 3. That gives you two full days and one morning in Manali without paying for a third hotel night.
How Do You Reach Manali from Delhi on a Budget?
1. By HRTC or private Volvo bus
The overnight Volvo is the standard budget option. HRTC runs its Himsuta AC Volvo and Scania 2+2 services from ISBT Kashmere Gate in the evening (listed departures between 8 pm and 10.45 pm), with October 2026 fares of about ₹1,744–1,766 one way; ordinary and Deluxe HRTC buses cost less but take longer and are far less comfortable for 12 hours. Private Volvo operators board at Majnu ka Tila and Kashmere Gate and price by demand, so weekend and holiday fares can run well above the HRTC rate. 2. By private cab

Delhi to Manali 3 Days / 2 Nights Itinerary
Day 0: Delhi to Manali overnight
Board the evening Volvo at Kashmere Gate or Majnu ka Tila. Keep a light jacket, a bottle of water, snacks and any medicines in your day bag; the bus stops for dinner around Karnal or Ambala and again near Mandi before dawn. Overnight: bus.
Day 1: Arrive in Manali, Hadimba Temple, Van Vihar, Old Manali
Check in, eat breakfast and keep the day easy after the long drive. Start at Hadimba Devi Temple, a four-tiered pagoda built in 1553 inside a deodar grove about 2 km from Mall Road; the walk to it and through Van Vihar, the riverside deodar park near the bus stand, costs nothing beyond a small park ticket. Cross the Manalsu nala in the evening to Old Manali for cafés and the Manu Temple, then finish on Mall Road for dinner and woollens. Overnight: Manali.
Day 2: Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu
This is the big day, so leave by 8 am. Solang Valley is about 14 km north of Manali; paragliding, the ropeway, zorbing and ATV rides run subject to weather, and snow activities only once the slopes are white, usually from late December. From Solang the road climbs to the Atal Tunnel, the 9.02 km tunnel under Rohtang opened on 3 October 2020, which puts Sissu in Lahaul about 40 km and 1.5 hours from Manali with no Rohtang permit needed. Sissu has the waterfall across the Chandra river, the lake park and the first barren-mountain views of Lahaul.
