Short answer: Delhi to Manali is about 540 km by road: NH-44 to Chandigarh and Kiratpur, then the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane and NH-3 through Mandi and Kullu. A private car takes 11–13 hours; an overnight AC Volvo 10–12 hours (AC semi-sleepers from about ₹1,029 on a November 2026 listing). There is no train to Manali and, in winter 2026–27, no Delhi–Kullu flight. The quickest alternatives are the Vande Bharat or Shatabdi to Chandigarh (about 3 hours) or the overnight Himachal Express to Una, then a cab. A one-way sedan with Suzu starts from ₹6,899.

How far is Manali from Delhi, and which route do you take?
Manali is about 540 km from central Delhi by road, and buses and cars use the same corridor: NH-44 north through Panipat, Karnal and Ambala to Zirakpur, then Kharar and Ropar to Kiratpur Sahib, the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane, and the Beas valley through Mandi, Pandoh, the Aut tunnel, Bhuntar and Kullu.
| Stretch | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Delhi → Ambala → Zirakpur/Chandigarh (about 250 km) | Six-lane NH-44, the fastest part. Heavy trucks at night; fog in late December and January. |
| Chandigarh → Kharar → Ropar → Kiratpur Sahib | Busy road through towns; breakfast stops near Zirakpur or Kharar. |
| Kiratpur → Nerchowk (four-lane) | Long tunnels and a bypass of Bilaspur and Sundernagar; the main reason the trip is quicker than a few years ago. |
| Nerchowk → Mandi → Pandoh → Aut tunnel | The Beas gorge; a good lunch stop in Mandi. Landslide-prone in the monsoon. |
| Aut → Bhuntar → Kullu → Manali | The valley road; slowest in holiday traffic, especially Kullu town and the last stretch into Manali. |
The 540 km total is the figure on our Delhi to Manali taxi page; your odometer will vary by start point, and Chandigarh to Manali alone is about 290 km. Manali sits at about 2,050 m; Delhi is around 216 m, so most of the climb happens after Mandi.

Can you go from Delhi to Manali by train?
Not all the way. There is no railway to Manali; the nearest useful railheads are Chandigarh (290 km from Manali), Kalka (about 260 km), Una Himachal (about 245 km via Hamirpur and Mandi) and Ambala Cantt (about 320 km). These trains from Delhi fit a Manali trip:
| Train | Runs | Departs | Arrives | Listed fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22447 Vande Bharat | 6 days a week | New Delhi 05:50 | Chandigarh 08:38; Una Himachal 10:36 | CC about ₹856 to Chandigarh, ₹1,076 to Una |

Day plan: the 05:50 Vande Bharat or the 07:40 Shatabdi to Chandigarh and a pre-booked car from the station, reaching Manali by early evening. Night plan: the 22:50 Himachal Express to Una, a berth for the night, and a morning drive via Hamirpur and Mandi.
From Chandigarh our Chandigarh to Manali taxi starts from ₹4,199 for a sedan.
Can you fly from Delhi to Manali?
Not this winter. Manali’s airport is at Bhuntar, near Kullu, about 50–60 km south of Manali. Alliance Air was its only regular airline and stopped direct Delhi–Kullu flights after 24 October 2026; its winter schedule, running to 27 March 2027, links Kullu only with Jaipur and Dehradun on a few days a week. A flight search for late November 2026 showed no Delhi–Kullu flights at all.
The practical air option is Delhi–Chandigarh: on Friday 20 November 2026 there were seven non-stops, from Air India’s 05:50 to IndiGo’s 21:50, each taking about an hour. Fly the early one and drive the 290 km to Manali the same day. Our Kullu–Manali airport guide explains why Kullu flights are so often cancelled even in summer.
What should you know before driving yourself?
- Himachal entry fee: cars registered outside Himachal pay at the state border; for 2026–27 the rate for passenger vehicles up to 12 seats is ₹100 a day.
- Manali green tax: non-HP vehicles need a green tax permit to enter Manali, ₹200 for a car, valid seven days, bought online at the HP government permit site; carry a printout.
- Rohtang permit: needed only for Rohtang Pass in its open season, booked on the same portal; it is closed in winter. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu needs no Rohtang permit. See our Rohtang permit and road status guide.
- Timing: leave Delhi by 4:30–5 am. You clear the plains before traffic, and the hill section from Kiratpur is done in daylight.
- Hill driving: avoid night driving above Mandi; from December to March an SUV with good tyres is safer.
How do you beat traffic on the Delhi–Manali road?
Most delays happen in three places: getting out of Delhi on NH-44, the towns between Kharar and Kiratpur, and the valley road from Kullu to Manali, which turns into a queue on long weekends. In October 2026 holiday traffic left visitors stuck for hours near Manali; our report on the Manali and Shimla traffic jams has the details. To avoid the worst: travel midweek, leave Delhi before dawn, avoid arriving in Manali on Friday or Saturday evening of a long weekend, and fill fuel and eat before Kullu.
Is the Delhi to Manali road open in winter?
Yes. The highway from Delhi to Manali itself stays open in winter; snow rarely settles below Manali town for long. What changes is the road beyond Manali: after fresh snow, police often stop ordinary cars at Solang or nearby and allow only 4×4 vehicles towards the Atal Tunnel (9.02 km, opened in October 2020) and Lahaul, and Rohtang Pass is shut for the winter. After an early snowfall on 9 October 2025, for example, Rohtang closed and only four-wheel-drive vehicles were let through the tunnel. Check HP Police and Lahaul–Spiti district updates on the day, and keep a spare day in your plan. Our Manali snowfall guide covers when snow usually arrives.
On the plains, dense fog on NH-44 between late December and January slows buses and cars and delays trains; start later in the morning if visibility is poor, and allow extra time for connections. In the monsoon (mid-July to mid-September) landslides can block the Mandi–Kullu section for hours.
What this means for your trip
Delhi to Manali is one long day or one night: about 540 km and 10–13 hours by road. Take the overnight Volvo if you travel light and want the cheapest seat; a private car if you are three or more or travel with children; the Vande Bharat or Shatabdi plus a cab if you want daylight views without a 12-hour road day. Book buses early for weekends, leave by 5 am if you drive, and do not count on a Kullu flight this winter. If you want it all handled, our Manali tour package from Delhi (4N/5D including the overnight drive, from ₹14,999 per person, Deluxe, twin sharing, off-season) and Shimla Manali package from Delhi (5N/6D, from ₹14,499, priced for four sharing a car) bundle car, hotels and sightseeing; peak dates are 25% higher.
