Luxury India Tours: Palace Hotels, Private Guides and What They Cost

A luxury India tour means palace or heritage hotels, a private car with a professional driver, a licensed guide in each city, and someone on the ground who fixes things. Expect roughly US$350–600 per person per day for a premium trip and US$1,000 or more with palace suites and luxury trains.

Short answer: A luxury India tour usually means palace or heritage hotels, a private car with a professional driver, a licensed guide in each city, and someone on the ground who fixes things. Expect roughly US$350–600 per person per day for a well-run premium trip with 5-star hotels and private guiding, and US$1,000 or more per person per day once you add palace suites, luxury trains and private planes. Two weeks in October–March is the classic shape.

Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)

  • Three bands: premium (5-star chain hotels, private car and guide) from about US$350 per person per day; luxury (palace hotels, suites) about US$600–1,000; ultra-luxury (Oberoi Vilas, Aman, Six Senses, private flights) US$1,000 and up. All approximate, excluding international flights.
  • Palace hotel starting rates: Rambagh Palace Jaipur about ₹35,000 (US$370) a night, Taj Lake Palace Udaipur about ₹40,000 (US$420), Oberoi Amarvilas Agra about ₹50,000 (US$525) – Esquire India, 5 Aug 2026; peak-season and suite rates run far higher.
  • Luxury trains: Maharajas’ Express Deluxe Cabin from US$8,400 per person sharing for 7 days in 2026-27 (IRT Society tariff, checked 30 Oct 2026).
  • Best season: October to March. Palace hotels in Rajasthan fill 6–10 months ahead for December and February.
  • Classic route: Delhi – Agra – Ranthambore – Jaipur – Udaipur, 10–12 days, then Kerala or the Himalaya.
  • Our pricing: we quote luxury itineraries individually; a 20% token confirms, fully refundable within 48 hours of paying.

What does a luxury India tour actually include?

In our experience the word luxury gets used loosely by Indian agencies, so it helps to define it. A luxury tour has four parts that a mid-range tour does not: the hotels are palaces, heritage properties or top-tier chains (Taj, Oberoi, Leela, ITC, Aman, Six Senses); the car is a recent Toyota Innova Crysta or a Mercedes/BMW with a driver who stays with you for the whole trip; each city has a government-licensed guide booked in advance rather than picked up at the gate; and the operator manages the small things, such as a table at the hotel restaurant, a sunrise slot at the Taj Mahal or a jeep in the right Ranthambore zone.

What it does not need to include is a tour leader on every day. Most of our luxury clients prefer a driver plus local guides, which leaves afternoons free. Our comparison of private and group tours in India goes into that choice.

How much do luxury India tours cost per day?

Prices depend on three things: the hotel category, the season, and how many people share the car and guide. The table below is our working guide for a couple travelling in the October–March season, excluding international flights. Exchange rate about ₹95 to the US dollar (October 2026). All figures are approximate and the final quote is itinerary-specific.

Band Typical hotels Transport and guiding Approx. per person per day (two sharing)
Premium 5-star chains (Taj Gateway/Vivanta, ITC, Marriott, Hyatt), heritage havelis Innova Crysta with driver, licensed guide half-days US$350–600
Luxury Rambagh Palace, Taj Lake Palace, Umaid Bhawan, Oberoi Vilas hotels, Leela Palaces Mercedes/BMW or Innova, full-day guides, some private experiences US$600–1,000
Ultra-luxury Suites at the above, Aman-i-Khas, Amanbagh, Six Senses Fort Barwara, Sujan camps Charter flights, private dinners, luxury train segments US$1,000–2,500+

For a sense of where that money goes, Esquire India (5 August 2026) listed starting rates of about ₹35,000 a night at Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, ₹40,000 at Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur, ₹50,000 at the Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra and ₹75,000 at Six Senses Fort Barwara. Those are low-season entry rates; around Christmas and New Year the same rooms can be two to three times that. A luxury travel advisory, Forest Travel, puts a fully private luxury journey at “around US$1,000 per person per night”, which matches our ultra-luxury band.

If you want to see how these numbers compare with a mid-range trip, our guide to how much a trip to India costs gives budgets for one, two and three weeks, and our Golden Triangle cost breakdown shows the same route at three price points.

Which palace hotels are worth the money?

Rajasthan has the deepest bench of palace hotels in the world, and most of them are run by two groups: Taj (part of the Tata group) and HRH Group (the Mewar royal family of Udaipur). We mention these as examples we book for clients, not as partners, and rates change by date.

  • Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur: the white marble palace on Lake Pichola, reached by the hotel boat. Rooms on the lake side are the ones to ask for. Book the dinner at the lakeside terrace as well.
  • Rambagh Palace, Jaipur: former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, with 47 acres of gardens and peacocks on the lawn. The Suvarna Mahal dining room is the set piece.
  • Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur: one wing is still the Jodhpur royal family’s home, the rest is a Taj hotel. It is the one most clients remember.
  • Oberoi Udaivilas (Udaipur) and Oberoi Amarvilas (Agra): not historic palaces but built in the style, with the Amarvilas giving a direct Taj Mahal view from every room, about 600 m from the monument.
  • Samode Palace and Samode Haveli: family-run, smaller and quieter alternatives near and in Jaipur.
  • Deogarh Mahal, Rawla Narlai, Chanoud Garh: village forts between Udaipur and Jodhpur for a night on the road.

Outside Rajasthan, luxury has a different face: Kumarakom Lake Resort and the Taj Malabar in Kerala, Ananda in the Himalayas above Rishikesh (an Ayurveda and yoga destination spa, charged per person on a programme basis), and in Himachal, the Oberoi Cecil and Wildflower Hall near Shimla. Our Udaipur guide covers where in the city to stay if a palace is beyond the budget.

What does a two-week luxury India itinerary look like?

The route below is the one we build most often for first-time luxury travellers. It keeps driving days under five hours and uses one short flight.

Days Where Example hotel Highlight
1–2 Delhi The Imperial, Oberoi New Delhi, Leela Palace Old Delhi by cycle rickshaw with a guide, Humayun’s Tomb
3–4 Agra Oberoi Amarvilas, ITC Mughal Taj Mahal at sunrise (closed Fridays), Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh at dusk
5–6 Ranthambore Aman-i-Khas, Sujan Sher Bagh, Oberoi Vanyavilas Two or three tiger safaris in a private jeep
7–9 Jaipur Rambagh Palace, Samode Haveli, Oberoi Rajvilas Amber Fort early, private block-printing workshop, dinner at a city palace
10–11 Road to Udaipur Deogarh Mahal or Rawla Narlai Ranakpur Jain temples, Kumbhalgarh walls
12–14 Udaipur Taj Lake Palace, Oberoi Udaivilas, Leela Palace Sunset boat on Lake Pichola, City Palace private tour; fly out via Delhi or Mumbai

With 18–21 days we add Kerala (a private houseboat and an Ayurveda retreat) or a Himalayan finish. Our two-week India itinerary shows the mid-range version of the same route, and our Rajasthan itinerary guide adds Jodhpur and Jaisalmer for those with more time.

Are luxury trains in India worth it?

For some travellers, yes, but go in with clear expectations. The Maharajas’ Express (run by IRCTC) is the most polished: its Indian Panorama and Heritage of India journeys run 7 days from Delhi or Mumbai through Jaipur, Ranthambore, Agra and (on the Panorama) Khajuraho and Varanasi, with 2026-27 departures roughly monthly from 1 November 2026 to March 2027 and the Deluxe Cabin priced at US$8,400 per person sharing, Junior Suite US$10,700, Suite US$15,600 (IRT Society tariff, checked 30 October 2026, plus 5% tax). The Palace on Wheels (Indian Railways and Rajasthan Tourism) does a 7-night Rajasthan loop from Delhi between September and April with fares from about ₹5.2 lakh to ₹15.8 lakh per person (Outlook Traveller, 11 May 2026).

The trade-off is that cabins are compact, nights are spent moving, and sightseeing is in a group of up to about 80 passengers. Many of our clients prefer two or three nights of palace hotels for the same money. We compare all four trains, including the Deccan Odyssey and the Golden Chariot, in our guide to luxury trains in India.

Private guide, private car or both?

Both, in our view, but used differently. The driver is with you for the whole trip, so he (almost all Indian chauffeurs are men) learns your pace, carries the water and knows which gate to use. Guides are booked city by city, usually for a half or full day, because a Jaipur guide knows Amber Fort and a Varanasi guide knows the ghats; nobody knows both well. Government-licensed guides in the Golden Triangle typically charge in the region of ₹2,000–4,000 (US$20–40) for a full day for a small private group; licensed guides at the Taj Mahal are listed by the Archaeological Survey of India and wear an identity card.

Tipping is expected but not large: see our tipping in India guide for the amounts that are normal for drivers, guides and hotel staff on a luxury trip.

When should you travel, and how far ahead should you book?

October to March is the season for Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle: warm days, cool nights and clear skies, with fog in Delhi and Agra possible in late December and January. The Christmas and New Year fortnight (roughly 20 December to 5 January) is the most expensive two weeks of the year, and palace hotel rates and our package rates both rise by about 25% then. Kerala is at its best December to February. The Himalaya (Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala) works April to June and September to November; our best time to visit India guide has a month-by-month table.

For December, February and any trip that includes a specific palace suite or the Lake Palace, book 6–10 months ahead. For Ranthambore, safari permits open 365 days ahead on the government portal and the best zones sell out quickly in peak season. If you are booking within three months of travel, tell us your must-have hotels first and we will build the route around whichever nights are available.

How to check a luxury operator before you pay

The luxury end of the market attracts polished websites with nothing behind them. Ask for a Ministry of Tourism or state tourism registration (ours is HP Tourism Reg. No. DTO-MND-11-243/2022 and our ISO 9001 was renewed in October 2026), a GST number, and the hotel confirmation voucher in your name before the balance is paid. Pay by card through a named gateway rather than a bank transfer to a personal account; we take international cards through Razorpay and PayPal, with a 20% token to confirm and a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying. Our guide to booking with a local tour operator in India lists the checks in order, and our travel insurance guide explains cover for high-value hotel deposits.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a luxury trip to India cost?

Plan on roughly US$600–1,000 per person per day for palace hotels, a private car with driver and licensed guides, two people sharing, excluding international flights. A well-run premium trip with 5-star chain hotels starts nearer US$350 a day, and ultra-luxury trips with suites, luxury trains and charter flights run US$1,000–2,500 a day. Season and hotel choice move the number more than anything else.

Which is the best palace hotel in India?

Three are mentioned most by our clients: Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur for setting, Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur for scale, and Rambagh Palace in Jaipur for gardens and service. Starting rates in 2026 are about ₹35,000–40,000 (US$370–420) a night (Esquire India, 5 August 2026), rising sharply for suites and over Christmas and New Year.

Is the Maharajas’ Express worth the price?

It is a comfortable way to cover Rajasthan and Agra without hotel changes, and the service is good. The 2026-27 Deluxe Cabin fare is US$8,400 per person sharing for 7 days. For the same money you could stay in three palace hotels with a private car and guides, with larger rooms and more flexibility, so it depends on whether the train itself is the draw.

How many days do you need for a luxury India tour?

Ten to fourteen days covers Delhi, Agra, Ranthambore, Jaipur and Udaipur at a relaxed pace with no drive over five hours. Add four to six days for Kerala backwaters and an Ayurveda stay, or for a Himalayan finish in Shimla or Dharamshala. Seven days is enough for a palace-hotel Golden Triangle but feels rushed with Ranthambore added.

When is the best time for a luxury tour of Rajasthan?

October to March. Days are warm and clear, nights cool, and the Pushkar camel fair (November) and Jaipur Literature Festival (January) fall in the season. The last two weeks of December are the most expensive and busiest of the year. April to June is very hot, and July to September brings monsoon humidity, though hotel rates drop.

Do luxury tours in India include a guide every day?

Usually not, and most travellers prefer it that way. A private driver stays with you for the whole trip, and a licensed local guide is booked in each city for a half or full day of sightseeing. Days on the road, at a tiger reserve or in a resort do not need a guide. Full-time tour escorts can be arranged at extra cost.
