In short

Can you do a Taj Mahal tour from Delhi in one day?

Yes. A Taj Mahal tour from Delhi works as one long day: Agra is 204 km (127 mi) away by road, or about 1 h 40 min on the Gatimaan Express train. You see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort and are back in Delhi by night. For the sunrise, stay one night in Agra. The Taj is closed on Fridays. Suzu Travels quotes in US dollars; 20% deposit.

Four ways to see the Taj Mahal from Delhi

Delhi to Agra is 204 km (127 mi) by road. Fatehpur Sikri sits on the road on to Jaipur — the third city of the Golden Triangle.

Option How it works Good for
Same day by private car Hotel pick-up in Delhi after first light, the Yamuna Expressway (165 km / 103 mi of it), Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, back in Delhi by night — roughly 408 km (254 mi) of road in the day. A free day in Delhi, families, flexible timing
Same day by train + car in Agra The Gatimaan Express from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantonment covers 188 km (117 mi) in about 1 h 40 min. Our car meets you at Agra station and drops you back for the evening train. Check current timings and run days on IRCTC. Less time on the road
Overnight in Agra (sunrise) Drive or take the train the day before, see Agra Fort in the afternoon, enter the Taj when it opens — 30 minutes before sunrise — and drive back to Delhi the next day. Photographers, a calmer visit, winter fog season
Agra on the way to Jaipur Delhi → Agra → Fatehpur Sikri → Jaipur by private car: the Golden Triangle. Jaipur is 232 km (144 mi) from Agra. A first trip to India with 4–6 days

Distances are official road figures (sources below). We never put the Taj on a Friday.

How the same-day trip by car works

One car and one English-speaking driver for the day, from your Delhi hotel door and back.

  1. Pick-up in DelhiFrom your hotel or the airport, after first light. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
  2. The expressway to AgraMost of the drive is on the six-lane Yamuna Expressway. Cars stop outside the 500 m low-pollution zone around the Taj; the battery bus or golf cart takes you to the gate.
  3. The Taj MahalForeign visitors buy a separate ticket (on the spot or online); it includes shoe covers, a small bottle of water and the battery bus. Add a licensed guide if you want the history explained — hire only approved guides who show an ID card.
  4. Agra FortThe red-sandstone fort is a second UNESCO World Heritage Site, open sunrise to sunset every day — including Fridays.
  5. Back to DelhiLunch on the way, then the drive back. Change the plan on the day if you like — an extra stop or a night in Agra is quoted on the spot.

What's included — and what isn't

Included

Private air-conditioned car and driver for the day, fuel, tolls, parking and state taxes, hotel or airport pick-up and drop in Delhi.

Not included

Taj Mahal and Agra Fort tickets, train tickets, a licensed monument guide, meals and tips. We can book the tickets and the guide for you in the same quote.

Cars

Sedan for 2–3 travellers, SUV for 4–6, a minibus for groups. Same car and driver all day.

Who you deal with

A registered travel agent with an office in Himachal Pradesh, not a marketplace. The person who quotes your trip answers the phone on the day.

Timing rules: Fridays, sunrise and winter fog

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. On other days it opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. A same-day sunrise visit means leaving Delhi in the dark — the UK Foreign Office advises visitors to avoid travelling at night and in fog, as accidents are common in low visibility. That is why, for the sunrise, we suggest one night in Agra instead of a 3 am departure, especially in the winter fog months.

Night viewing: the Taj opens on five nights a month — the full-moon night and two nights either side — from 8 pm to midnight, in batches of up to 50 people for 30 minutes. Tickets are sold online on the Archaeological Survey of India portal; you report at Shilpgram near the East Gate 30 minutes early. It is closed on Fridays and during Ramzan, and mobile phones are not allowed at night.

What you can — and can't — take into the Taj Mahal

Leave in the car

Food and snacks, tobacco, lighters, headphones, knives, mobile chargers and other electric goods (cameras are fine), tripods and drones. Your driver keeps the car near the parking, so nothing has to be thrown away.

Bring

Your passport or ID, your ticket, a phone on silent, a camera and water (allowed). Small bags only — large bags slow down the security check.

Inside

No photography inside the main mausoleum, no touching the marble, and quiet inside the tomb. The Taj Museum inside the complex is free, 10 am to 5 pm.

Why book the Agra day with a local company

A Taj day trip is short, but a lot can go wrong: a Friday booking, a pick-up in fog, a car that waits in the wrong car park, a guide nobody vetted at the gate. We plan the day around the official rules on this page and stay on the phone while you travel.

Many visitors who start with Agra stay on: Jaipur is 232 km (144 mi) further on, and the Himalayan hill stations are a few days north. If you want more than a day, see the Golden Triangle tour or a longer trip with a private driver.

Prices

FAQ

Questions travellers ask

Can you see the Taj Mahal in a day trip from Delhi?

Yes. Agra is 204 km (127 mi) from Delhi by road, so a private-car day trip covers the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort and brings you back by night. It is a long day — about 408 km (254 mi) of road — so if you want the sunrise, stay one night in Agra.

Is it better to go from Delhi to Agra by car or by train?

The Gatimaan Express covers the 188 km (117 mi) from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantonment in about 1 h 40 min, so the train saves road time; you still need a car in Agra. A private car is door to door and flexible. Check the train’s current timings and run days on IRCTC.

Which day is the Taj Mahal closed?

Friday. The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors every Friday; night viewing is closed on Fridays too. Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri stay open every day.

Is a sunrise visit worth it?

The gates open 30 minutes before sunrise, and many visitors love the early light and smaller crowds. From Delhi that means driving in the dark, which the UK Foreign Office advises against (night and fog). We suggest a night in Agra for the sunrise.

What can't I take into the Taj Mahal?

Food, tobacco, headphones, knives, mobile chargers and other electric goods except cameras, tripods and drones. Water bottles are allowed, and photography is not allowed inside the main mausoleum. Leave the rest in the car with your driver.

Can I see the Taj Mahal at night?

Yes, on five nights a month around the full moon, from 8 pm to midnight in small batches, with tickets sold online on the Archaeological Survey of India portal. It is closed on Fridays and during Ramzan, and phones are not allowed. We can add a night in Agra for it.

Do I need a guide at the Taj Mahal?

No, but a good one brings the history to life. Hire only approved guides who show an ID card — we can add a licensed guide to your quote so you don’t have to choose one at the gate.

How much does a Taj Mahal tour from Delhi cost?

The day trip is quoted on request — it depends on the car, the season and whether you take the train. The Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) starts from US$299 per person for 4 days. A 20% deposit locks your dates, refundable within 48 hours.
