Golden Triangle Itinerary 7 Days
Three cities, one car, the right order.
Delhi, the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Akbar’s red city at Fatehpur Sikri and the forts of Jaipur — the classic first trip to India. Here is how we plan it day by day in five or seven days: which day for the Taj, which days the Delhi monuments close, how long the drives really are, and what to change in the foggy months.
- 5 or 7 days Delhi · Agra · Jaipur
- Taj closed Fridays we plan around it
- Private car one driver for the whole trip
- 20% deposit full refund within 48 h
What is a good Golden Triangle itinerary?
A Golden Triangle itinerary needs 5 to 7 days: Delhi (1–2 days) → Agra, with the Taj Mahal at sunrise (closed on Fridays) → Fatehpur Sikri → Jaipur (2 days) → back to Delhi. Go between October and March, by private car with one driver. Suzu Travels’ private Golden Triangle tours start from US$299 (4 days) or US$449 (6 days), with a 20% deposit.

The route: Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur
The three cities sit in a triangle a few hours apart, so the trip is mostly sightseeing, not driving. Most people go anticlockwise — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur — but the order matters less than one rule: your Taj Mahal day must not be a Friday.
Delhi → Agra → Fatehpur Sikri (and the optional Abhaneri stepwell) → Jaipur → back to Delhi for your flight home. Distances are the official ones from the Taj Mahal site; drive times are our own experience on these roads.
The Golden Triangle in 7 days, day by day
Our sample for a comfortable first trip — two nights in each city, nothing rushed. It is where we start, not a fixed package: days move to fit your flights and the weekday rules below.
-
DAY 1Arrive in Delhi
Your driver meets you at the airport — name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip. Check in and rest; many international flights land late at night.
-
DAY 2Delhi: old and new
Old Delhi in the morning, New Delhi in the afternoon. If today is a Monday, the Red Fort, Akshardham and the Lotus Temple are closed — we swap in Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutb Minar, which open every day. Our Delhi tour has the full list.
-
DAY 3Delhi → Agra
Drive to Agra on the expressway, about 3–4 hours. Agra Fort in the afternoon (open sunrise to sunset every day), then the Taj seen from across the river at Mehtab Bagh as the light goes.
-
DAY 4Taj Mahal at sunrise → Fatehpur Sikri → Jaipur
The Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise — the calmest hour. After breakfast, Fatehpur Sikri, the red-sandstone city Akbar built in the second half of the 16th century and left after only about ten years (UNESCO, 1986). Arrive in Jaipur in the evening; the Abhaneri stepwell can be added on the way.
-
DAY 5Jaipur: Amber Fort and the old city
Amber Fort in the morning — commissioned by Maharaja Man Singh I in 1592, about 11 km (7 mi) from the centre, with the Sheesh Mahal, its palace of mirrors. Afternoon in the walled city founded in 1727: the City Palace and the Hawa Mahal.
-
DAY 6Jaipur at your pace
Bazaars, a slow lunch, or back to Amber for the evening light show (English at 19:30). Or ask us to add Ranthambore for a tiger safari instead.
-
DAY 7Jaipur → Delhi, fly home
Drive back to Delhi, about 5 hours, timed for an evening flight. Your driver takes you straight to the airport.
Take this plan with you: 7-day itinerary (PDF). Day by day, what is included and what is not, prices and how booking works — 2 pages. No email or sign-up needed; print it or share it with whoever you travel with.
Only 5 days? The short version
Five days work if you accept one long day. Here is the order we use:
| Day | Where | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Delhi | Arrive; Old and New Delhi highlights |
| 2 | Delhi → Agra | Expressway drive; Agra Fort; the Taj from Mehtab Bagh at sunset |
| 3 | Agra → Jaipur | Taj Mahal at sunrise, Fatehpur Sikri on the way, Jaipur in the evening |
| 4 | Jaipur | Amber Fort, the City Palace, the Hawa Mahal and the bazaars |
| 5 | Jaipur → Delhi | Drive to Delhi airport for your flight home |
Four days is possible — it is our shortest published tour — but you see Delhi only on the way in or out.
The weekday rules that shape the plan
The mistake we see most often: arriving in Agra on a Friday. Check your dates against this table before you book flights:
| Place | Closed | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Taj Mahal, Agra | Every Friday | Plan Agra on Saturday to Thursday. Land on a Thursday? We see Agra first and keep Delhi for the end. |
| Red Fort, Delhi | Mondays, and 15 July – 15 August for Independence Day | Swap in Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutb Minar, open every day |
| Akshardham and the Lotus Temple, Delhi | Mondays | Visit on another Delhi day |
| Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri | Open every day, sunrise to sunset | No change needed |
Opening days can change (security, state events) — confirm before travel; we re-check the day before.
When to go — and what changes in the foggy months
October to March: the season
In our experience these are the best months for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur — the months most of our international guests choose.
December and January: fog
Thick morning fog is common on the North Indian plains. The UK Foreign Office (advice updated 7 October 2026) says: “Avoid travelling at night and in fog as accidents are common due to low visibility.” We don’t drive at night or in thick fog — in December and January we may start later and that is normal.
October to February: air quality
The UK Foreign Office notes that severe air pollution is a major health hazard, especially from October to February, with North Indian cities most affected. If you have asthma or a heart or lung condition, ask your doctor before a winter trip and see NHS Fit for Travel or the CDC.
Car or train?
A fast train runs from Delhi (Hazrat Nizamuddin) to Agra Cantt, 188 km (117 mi), and is a good choice for a day trip — check current timings on IRCTC. For the full triangle a private car is simpler: it waits at every stop, carries your luggage and takes in Fatehpur Sikri on the way.
Add Rishikesh, tigers or the Himalaya
Rishikesh and the Ganges
Our 8-day Golden Triangle with Rishikesh adds the yoga town on the Ganges — see the Rishikesh guide and the prices below.
A tiger safari at Ranthambore
Often added after Jaipur. Safari permits are booked only through the official portal — our tiger safari guide explains seasons and booking.
More of Rajasthan
Continue from Jaipur to Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur — our 12-day Rajasthan tour.
The Himalaya, our home
Pair the triangle with Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, where our office is — the 2-week India itinerary.
How we run it — and what's included
Included
Hotel nights with breakfast, a private air-conditioned car and the same English-speaking driver throughout, airport pick-up and drop, and local guides at the main monuments.
Not included
Flights, India visa fees, monument tickets (foreign visitors buy a separate, higher ticket at the Taj) and tips — unless they are in your quote.
Your driver
Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip. One driver for the whole route — see how our private car with driver works.
Who you deal with
Suzu Travels, a small team with a real office in Himachal Pradesh, from the first message to the airport drop. One WhatsApp chat, one US-dollar quote.
Before you book
Visa
You need an Indian visa before you fly. Apply only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware of look-alike sites that charge extra. We are not a visa agency. Our India e-Visa guide explains the steps.
Plan the flights around the Taj
Pick your arrival day first, then check that day 3 or 4 (day 2 or 3 on the short version) is not a Friday. We do this check for you with every quote.
Pace
Two nights per city is what we recommend. Agra in one afternoon and a sunrise is enough for most people; Jaipur deserves two full days.

Questions travellers ask
How many days do I need for the Golden Triangle?
Five days is the minimum that feels like a trip; seven is comfortable, with two nights in each city. Our shortest published tour is four days.
What order should I do the Golden Triangle in?
Either direction works. Most people go Delhi → Agra → Jaipur → Delhi; choose the direction that keeps your Agra day off a Friday.
Which day is the Taj Mahal closed?
Every Friday. On other days it opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset. Foreign visitors buy a separate, higher ticket.
How long are the drives?
Delhi to Agra is 204 km (127 miles), about 3–4 hours on the expressway; Agra to Jaipur is 232 km (144 miles), about 4–5 hours with the stop at Fatehpur Sikri; Jaipur back to Delhi takes about 5 hours. The times are our own experience, not official figures.
Is it better to go by car or by train?
A fast train from Delhi to Agra is a good day-trip option — check current timings on IRCTC. For the whole triangle, a private car is easier: it waits at every stop and covers Fatehpur Sikri on the way. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
What is the best time for the Golden Triangle?
October to March, in our experience. In December and January expect morning fog — we don’t drive at night or in thick fog, so some days start later — and the UK Foreign Office notes severe air pollution from October to February.
Can I add Rishikesh, Ranthambore or the Himalaya?
Yes. Our Golden Triangle with Rishikesh is 8 days from US$649 per person; Ranthambore fits after Jaipur; and Himachal Pradesh, where our office is, can follow for a two-week trip.
What is included and how do I book?
Accommodation, private car and driver, airport transfers, breakfast and local guides at the main monuments; flights, visa fees, monument tickets and tips are separate unless in the quote. A 20% deposit locks your dates and price, with a full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying.
Send us your flight dates — we'll fit the triangle around them
Your arrival and departure days, how many of you, the hotel tier you like and whether you want Rishikesh, tigers or the Himalaya too. You get a day-by-day plan that keeps the Taj off a Friday and a US-dollar quote, then decide.
We usually reply within 2 hours, 9 am–9 pm IST (UTC+5:30). Email info@suzutravels.com if you don’t use WhatsApp.
Booking: A 20% deposit locks your dates and price. Full refund if you cancel within 48 hours of paying. Pay by card (Razorpay, international cards accepted) or PayPal; the balance is due before the trip.
