What is the best way to get from Agra to Jaipur?
Agra to Jaipur is 232 km (144 mi) by road. Go by private car if you want to stop at Fatehpur Sikri (a UNESCO site) and the Abhaneri stepwell on the way — a full travel day. Or take one of several daily trains; check current timings on IRCTC, where foreigners can book up to 365 days ahead. Suzu Travels quotes cars on request.
Agra to Jaipur: train, private car or bus
Three honest ways to make the trip. Which one is right depends on whether you want to see anything on the way.
Agra to Jaipur is 232 km (144 mi) by road. Fatehpur Sikri is close to the Agra end; the Abhaneri stepwell is a short detour off the highway, closer to Jaipur.
| Option | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Private car with stops | Leave Agra after breakfast, see Fatehpur Sikri and the Abhaneri stepwell, reach Jaipur by late afternoon. A full travel day, with the same English-speaking driver throughout. | First trips, families, anyone who wants the two stops |
| Private car, direct | The same 232 km (144 mi) road without the stops — about half a day. Hotel door to hotel door, luggage stays in the car. | Travellers short on time, late starts |
| Train | Several trains run daily from Agra Cantt and Agra Fort stations to Jaipur Junction. Timings vary by train and change — check current trains and timings on IRCTC. You still need a ride to and from each station. | Arriving quickly, travelling light |
| Bus | Public buses cover the route. The UK Foreign Office notes that buses are often driven fast and recklessly and that accidents are common. | Budget travel — we don’t recommend it for a first trip |
The road distance is the official figure from the Taj Mahal website (sources below). We don’t print train names or times as fact — they change; IRCTC is the source.
The car day: how we plan Agra to Jaipur with stops
In our experience this is the version most first-time visitors enjoy: the transfer becomes one of the best days of the trip.
- Leave Agra after breakfastIn daylight, never before first light in the winter fog season. Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.
- Fatehpur Sikri (allow about 2 hours)Emperor Akbar’s red-sandstone city, close to the Agra end of the road. It is open sunrise to sunset every day. Add a licensed guide if you want the history explained.
- On through RajasthanThe road crosses into Rajasthan. Lunch on the way, at a stop that suits you.
- Abhaneri (allow about 1 hour)A short detour off the Agra–Jaipur highway in Dausa district, closer to the Jaipur end: the Chand Baori stepwell and the Harshat Mata temple next to it.
- Jaipur by late afternoonDrop at your hotel in the Pink City. Change the plan on the day if you like — an extra stop is easy when the car is yours.
Two stops worth making between Agra and Jaipur
Fatehpur Sikri
Built by Emperor Akbar in the second half of the 16th century and the Mughal capital for only about ten years. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, with the great Jama Masjid inside — Agra’s third UNESCO site after the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.
Chand Baori, Abhaneri
A stepwell of 13 levels, about 20 m (66 ft) deep, in a village that dates from the 9th century. The geometric flights of steps — about 3,500 of them, per the Abhaneri Festival listing — make it one of the most striking stops of the day.
Harshat Mata temple
A 10th-century temple right beside the stepwell, so it adds only minutes to the stop. Dress modestly and take your shoes off where asked.
How foreigners book Indian trains from Agra to Jaipur
If the train suits you better, book it yourself online — it is straightforward once you know the rules.
- Use the Foreign Tourist QuotaIndian Railways keeps a Foreign Tourist Quota that international users can book online on IRCTC up to 365 days in advance. The general booking window was cut to 60 days from 1 November 2024; the 365-day limit for foreign tourists stayed.
- Have your passports readyYou need a valid passport number for each passenger.
- Pay by international cardThe quota accepts payment by international debit or credit card. Classes include EC, 1A, 2A, 3A, CC, SL and 2S, depending on the train.
- Buy only from official channelsBook only on the official IRCTC site or through your travel company — not with people at the station (UK FCDO warns about touts).
- Plan the station transfersAgra Cantt and Agra Fort stations are in the city, Jaipur Junction in Jaipur. We can meet you at either end with a car if you combine train and car.
Travelling safely between Agra and Jaipur
The UK Foreign Office advises: “Avoid travelling at night and in fog as accidents are common due to low visibility.” It also warns: “Be cautious in tourist areas, where scammers, pickpockets and ticket touts target foreign nationals” and “avoid people at railway stations offering tickets and tours as you may be scammed.” That is why we drive this road in daylight only, and why we suggest booking trains online rather than at the station.
App-based taxis like Uber and Ola are widely available, the FCDO notes, including in all airport terminal buildings — useful for short hops in Agra or Jaipur. For the long road between the two, a car booked through a registered company means you know in advance who is driving: your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip.

Jaipur to Agra: the same road in reverse
Going the other way works just as well. Leave Jaipur after breakfast, stop at Abhaneri first (it is near the Jaipur end), then Fatehpur Sikri, and reach Agra in the late afternoon. The same trains run in the other direction — check current timings on IRCTC.
Agra to Jaipur is usually one leg of the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur). Many travellers continue west on a Rajasthan tour, or keep the same car and driver for the whole trip with a private driver. Starting in Delhi? See the Taj Mahal tour from Delhi.
