What is the best way to do a Delhi tour?

A Delhi tour works best by private car with an English-speaking driver: Old Delhi (Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, the Red Fort) one morning, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutb Minar and India Gate the next — or all in one long day. Avoid Mondays for the Red Fort, Akshardham and the Lotus Temple. Suzu Travels quotes in US dollars; 20% deposit.

A one-day and a two-day Delhi tour

Old Delhi is busiest and most atmospheric in the morning; the southern monuments are spread out, so they go together. Delhi Tourism’s own one-day plan says the Red Fort alone needs at least two hours.

Day 1: Red Fort and Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, then India Gate. Day 2: Humayun’s Tomb, the Lotus Temple and the Qutb Minar complex in the south.

Plan Morning Afternoon and evening
One long day Jama Masjid (foreign visitors from 8 am), a walk or rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, the Red Fort. Humayun’s Tomb, the Qutb Minar complex, then India Gate at dusk on the way back to your hotel.
Two days — day 1 (Old & New Delhi) Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, the Red Fort with time for its pavilions and gardens. New Delhi: Rashtrapati Bhavan and the government buildings from the road, India Gate, Connaught Place for lunch or shopping.
Two days — day 2 (south Delhi) Humayun’s Tomb in the soft morning light, then the Lotus Temple. The Qutb Minar complex and the Iron Pillar; Akshardham in the late afternoon if you have the energy.
On a Monday Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk, India Gate. Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutb Minar complex — both are open every day. The Red Fort, Akshardham and the Lotus Temple are closed.

Opening days can change for state events and security; we confirm the next day’s plan the evening before. The Red Fort is also closed to ordinary visitors from 15 July to 15 August each year.

What you see on a Delhi tour

Red Fort (Lal Qila)

Shah Jahan’s palace fort of Shahjahanabad, built in 1638, with red sandstone walls 33 m (108 ft) high. A UNESCO World Heritage Site; its gardens and pavilions inspired buildings across Rajasthan, Delhi and Agra. Closed on Mondays.

Jama Masjid

Begun by Shah Jahan in 1644; the courtyard holds about 25,000 worshippers. Foreign visitors can enter from 8 am to sunset outside prayer times; robes can be hired at the northern gate. Open every day.

Humayun's Tomb

Built in the 1560s under Emperor Akbar and finished in 1570 — the first garden-tomb in the Indian subcontinent and the model the Taj Mahal perfected about 80 years later. UNESCO-listed since 1993; open sunrise to sunset, every day.

Qutb Minar complex

The 72.5 m (238 ft) tower begun in 1199, the Alai Darwaza gate of 1311, the oldest mosque in northern India and the Iron Pillar. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, open from sunrise to 8 pm.

India Gate and New Delhi

The broad central avenue with India Gate at one end and Rashtrapati Bhavan at the other, best at dusk. Delhi Tourism’s itinerary suggests lunch around Connaught Place.

Lotus Temple and Akshardham

The Bahá’í House of Worship (completed 1986; free; 9 am–5:30 pm) and Swaminarayan Akshardham (free entry, first entry 10 am, last 6:30 pm). Both are closed on Mondays.

What to wear and what to leave in the car

Akshardham does not allow mobile phones, cameras or any electronics, and no bags or food — there is a free cloakroom, or leave them in the car with your driver. Shoulders, upper arms and knees must be covered there. At the Jama Masjid, dress modestly and take off your shoes; robes can be hired at the northern gate, and tourists are not allowed in during prayers.

Foreign visitors pay a separate, higher ticket than Indian visitors at the ASI monuments (Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutb Minar). We can buy them for you in the same quote, or you buy them on the spot. Photography for personal use is free at Humayun’s Tomb.

How the Delhi tour works with us

One car and one English-speaking driver from your hotel door, for one or two days.

  1. Tell us your dates and hotelWhich days you are in Delhi, where you stay, and whether you arrive on a long layover or before a longer trip.
  2. Get a written plan and quoteThe order of the sights for your days (no Red Fort on a Monday), car type and what is included — in US dollars.
  3. Before the tripYour driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip, with our office number in Himachal.
  4. On the dayPick-up at your hotel or the airport; the driver waits near each monument. Add a licensed guide for the history — hire only approved guides who show an ID card.
  5. Change on the goSkip a sight, add a market or end early — the plan is yours, and changes are quoted on the spot.

What's included — and what isn't

What’s in a Delhi day: a private car and driver all day, pick-up and drop at your hotel or the airport, and your driver’s details before the trip. Tickets and a licensed guide can be added.

Included

Private air-conditioned car and driver for the day, fuel, parking and taxes, hotel or airport pick-up and drop in Delhi.

Not included

Monument tickets, a licensed guide, meals, rickshaw rides in Chandni Chowk and tips. We can add the tickets and a guide to the same quote.

Cars

Sedan for 2–3 travellers, SUV for 4–6, a minibus for groups. Same car and driver all day.

Who you deal with

A registered travel agent with an office in Himachal Pradesh, not a marketplace. The person who quotes your trip answers the phone on the day.

On a layover, and in the winter haze

Long layover: the Airport Express metro links IGI Airport and New Delhi station in about 15 minutes (22.7 km / 14.1 mi), but a car from the terminal saves the changes and the luggage. Leaving the airport needs a valid Indian visa. Apply only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware of look-alike sites that charge extra. We are not a visa agency; our e-Visa guide walks you through it.

Winter air: the UK Foreign Office says severe air pollution is a major health hazard, especially from October to February, and North Indian cities are most affected. If you have asthma or a heart or lung condition, ask your doctor before a winter trip and see NHS Fit for Travel or the CDC. On bad days we keep more of the day indoors (museums, Akshardham) and less time walking by the roads.

Fog and night driving: the Foreign Office also advises against travelling at night and in fog. That is one reason we suggest the Taj Mahal from Delhi as a separate day or a night in Agra, not squeezed onto the end of a Delhi tour.

Where most visitors go after Delhi

Agra is 204 km (127 mi) away by road — a day trip by car or train, or the second stop of the Golden Triangle with Jaipur. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so we build the Delhi days around it.

Heading to the mountains? We are a Himachal company: the same car and driver can take you north to Shimla, Manali or Dharamshala. See private car with driver or our first-time India guide.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask

How many days do you need in Delhi?

Two days let you see Old Delhi, New Delhi and the southern monuments without rushing. One long day by private car covers the highlights — Jama Masjid, the Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, the Qutb Minar and India Gate — if you start early.

Which Delhi monuments are closed on Monday?

The Red Fort, Swaminarayan Akshardham and the Lotus Temple are closed on Mondays. Humayun’s Tomb, the Qutb Minar complex, the Jama Masjid and India Gate are open every day, so a Monday tour still works.

Can I visit Delhi on a long layover?

Yes, if you hold a valid Indian visa — you need one to leave the airport. Apply only at indianvisaonline.gov.in. The Airport Express metro reaches New Delhi in about 15 minutes, or our car collects you at the terminal.

What should I wear on a Delhi tour?

Clothes that cover shoulders and knees work everywhere and are required at Akshardham. At the Jama Masjid you take off your shoes, and robes can be hired at the northern gate. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else.

Can I take my phone into Akshardham?

No. Mobile phones, cameras, electronics, bags and food are not allowed. Use the free cloakroom or leave them in the car with your driver.

Is Delhi's air bad in winter?

Often, yes. The UK Foreign Office says severe air pollution is a major health hazard from October to February, worst in North Indian cities. If you have a heart or lung condition, ask your doctor before you travel; we adjust the day on bad days.

Can I add the Taj Mahal to a Delhi tour?

As a separate day. Agra is 204 km (127 mi) from Delhi by road, and the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. See our Taj Mahal tour from Delhi page, or the Golden Triangle with Jaipur.

Do I need a guide as well as a driver?

Not necessarily — your driver handles the car and the route. A licensed guide brings the Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutb Minar to life; hire only approved guides who show an ID card, or ask us to add one.
