Selling Uttarakhand in Winter 2026-27: A B2B Guide for Travel Agents

After Diwali 2026 the Char Dham closes and Uttarakhand becomes a different product. What travel agents should sell from November to February — Corbett, Mussoorie, Nainital, the winter Char Dham seats and Auli — and the rules to build into every quote.

Short answer: if you are a travel agent selling Uttarakhand this winter, stop selling the Char Dham after Diwali and start selling four other things: Corbett from 15 November, the Mussoorie and Nainital hill stations for Christmas and New Year, the winter seats of the four dhams by road, and Auli for snow in January and February. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, so Gangotri, Kedarnath and Yamunotri are expected to close around 10–11 November, with Badrinath later in the month. That leaves a clean gap of roughly four months where demand is still strong but the product is completely different.

Every October agents ask us: “My client wants the mountains in December, what do I sell?” This guide is our answer, with the dates, rules and quoting traps that matter for the 2026-27 season.

What changes in Uttarakhand after Diwali 2026

Three things shift at once in November, and each one changes what you can put in a quote.

  • The big temples close. Gangotri is expected to close on Annakoot (about 10 November), Kedarnath and Yamunotri on Bhai Dooj (about 11 November), and Badrinath later, worked out from the panchang. The exact dates and muhurat are announced on Vijayadashami, which is 20 October this year. Our Char Dham closing dates guide has the full table. Hemkund Sahib has already closed for the year on 10 October, and the Valley of Flowers shuts on 31 October.
  • Corbett opens fully. Jhirna and Dhela run all year. Bijrani is scheduled from 15 October. Dhikala, Durgadevi, Sonanadi and Pakhro open on 15 November and run till 15 June.
  • The hill stations flip from off-season to peak. Mussoorie, Nainital, Dhanaulti and Mukteshwar are quiet in November and then sell out from about 20 December to the first week of January.

One thing that helps you this year is the road. The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway was opened in April 2026. It is about 210 km and has cut the drive from Delhi to Dehradun to roughly two and a half hours on a clear day. That makes a 3-night Mussoorie or Rishikesh trip from Delhi an easier sell.

The winter product list: what to sell, and when

This is the shortlist we would put in front of a retail agent’s December enquiries. All of these run by road and none depend on helicopters.

Product Best window Start point Typical length Watch out for
Jim Corbett safari weekend 15 Nov – Feb Ramnagar 2–3 nights Dhikala permits sell out fast
Mussoorie, Dhanaulti and Rishikesh Nov – Feb Delhi or Dehradun 3–5 nights New Year hotel minimum stays
Nainital, Bhimtal and Mukteshwar Nov – Feb Kathgodam railhead 4–5 nights Mall Road parking and traffic at peak; weekend crowds at Kainchi Dham, where Kainchi Dham registration was proposed in October 2026
Winter Char Dham (the four winter seats) Late Nov – Apr Haridwar or Dehradun 7–8 nights Road only, cold nights, short days
Auli and Jyotirmath for snow Jan – Feb Haridwar or Dehradun 5–6 nights Ropeway shut; one road up
Haridwar and Rishikesh short break All winter Delhi 2–3 nights Weekend crowds at Har Ki Pauri aarti

1. Jim Corbett: the easiest winter sale in the state

Corbett is the product that sells itself in winter, because the weather is dry, the light is good and the core zones are open. The catch is that it is a permit product, not a hotel product. Safari permits and forest rest houses are booked on the official portal, corbettonline.uk.gov.in, against the guest’s ID, the date and the zone, with a maximum of six guests per vehicle. Dhikala night stays and canter seats for the opening weeks go very quickly. For the 15–21 November check-ins, night-stay booking opened on 4 October.

For a client who wants a tiger chance rather than just a jungle drive, sell Bijrani or Dhikala and say clearly in the quote which zone is confirmed. The most common complaint we hear from agents is a client who paid for a “Corbett safari” and found themselves in a year-round buffer zone because nobody had booked the core zone early. Our Den of Tigers Corbett package can be quoted with the zone named upfront, and the Corbett zone calendar shows which zone opens when.

2. Mussoorie and Nainital: Christmas and New Year inventory

These are the two hill stations your retail clients already know by name, and that is both the strength and the risk. Between about 20 December and 2 January, good properties on the Mall Road in Nainital and in the Landour and Kempty Road belts of Mussoorie fill early. Many insist on a minimum two- or three-night stay over 31 December, and the gala dinner is usually charged on top. If you are holding a New Year group, block rooms now, not in December.

Snow is a bonus here, never the promise. Mussoorie, Dhanaulti and Nainital do get snow in some winters, usually in late December to February. They also have winters where it does not settle at all. Sell the views, the cold and the festive atmosphere. Mussoorie’s Winterline Carnival is usually held in the last week of December, but the district administration announces the dates each year, so check before you put it in a flyer. If the client is set on snow, move them to the Auli product below and tell them why.

For a quieter Kumaon trip, add Mukteshwar or Bhimtal to Nainital. Our Bhimtal and Corbett tour combines the lakes with a safari and works well for families who do not want the Nainital crowds every night.

3. Winter Char Dham: a real product, but a different one

When the main temples close, the deities are carried down to their winter seats, and worship continues there all winter:

  • Yamunotri – Kharsali village
  • Gangotri – Mukhba (Mukhwa) village, near Harsil
  • Kedarnath – Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath
  • Badrinath – Yogdhyan Badri Temple at Pandukeshwar and Narsingh Temple at Jyotirmath

The state has been promoting this as a winter Char Dham circuit for the last few years. It takes about seven to eight days, and it is done by road only, with no helicopter option. For an agent this is an honest product to sell to devout older clients who could not get a summer slot, or who cannot manage the Kedarnath trek. You need to set expectations clearly, though. The client is visiting the winter seats, not the high shrines. Nights are close to freezing, daylight is short, and some stretches can close after snowfall. We plan it with no night drives and a spare day. For the summer yatra next year, our Ultimate Char Dham Yatra is the full itinerary.

4. Auli: sell snow, but plan around one road

Auli is where Uttarakhand most reliably has snow in January and February, and it is the right answer for a client who says “snow or nothing”. The planning point most agents miss is that the Joshimath–Auli ropeway has been shut since January 2023, after the Joshimath land subsidence. That leaves the road of about 16 km from Jyotirmath as the only way up. After heavy snowfall, it can stay blocked until it is cleared. So sell Auli with a buffer day and a Jyotirmath fallback night, and do not promise the ropeway. Skiing and snow activities are seasonal and weather-dependent, so treat them as optional extras in the quote, not a fixed inclusion.

Rules and costs to build into every winter quote

Most disputes with clients come from small costs nobody mentioned. These are the ones to state in writing.

  • Green cess on outside vehicles. Uttarakhand now collects a green cess from vehicles registered outside the state at its border points. ANPR cameras read the number plate and the amount is deducted from the vehicle’s FASTag without stopping. The reported rates are ₹80 for light private vehicles and ₹140 for buses with more than 12 seats. Two-wheelers, Uttarakhand-registered vehicles, and electric, CNG and hybrid vehicles are exempt. If your client is self-driving from Delhi, tell them. If you are using a commercial vehicle, confirm with your transporter that state taxes and cess are inside their rate.
  • Corbett permits are per vehicle and per zone. Quote the zone and the number of safaris, not just “jungle safari”. Entry fees are higher for foreign nationals.
  • Christmas and New Year surcharges. Expect minimum stays and compulsory gala dinners at many hill station hotels. Quote them as separate lines so the client sees what they are paying for.
  • Parking and town entry. At peak times, Nainital police have restricted outside vehicles near the town centre and run shuttles from parking at the edge of town, and Mussoorie’s Mall Road area gets heavily congested. Build in time, and tell clients their car may not stop at the hotel door.
  • Driver night allowance and hill charges. These are standard on hill routes. Make sure they are included in the vehicle rate, not added at the end of the trip.

How a DMC makes winter Uttarakhand easier to sell

Winter Uttarakhand has many small moving parts, and getting one wrong is what turns a good trip into a refund request. Working through a local DMC gives you three things a retail OTA cannot:

  • Net rates you can mark up. You get one B2B rate for hotel, vehicle and sightseeing, and you set your own margin. The client deals with you, not with us.
  • Someone on the ground when plans change. When snow closes a road or a zone is cancelled, a DMC can switch the hotel, re-route the vehicle and send you an update you can forward to the client the same day.
  • Permits booked the moment windows open. Corbett zones and New Year rooms are won by whoever books first. That is our job, not your client’s.

For Uttarakhand, our Uttarakhand DMC services for travel agents covers the full B2B set-up, from Char Dham registration to Corbett permits and our Haridwar and Dehradun fleet. Many of our partner agents sell Himachal alongside Uttarakhand in winter. If you do too, our Himachal DMC handles that side, so one contact covers both states.

Frequently asked questions

Is Uttarakhand worth selling in December and January?

Yes, as long as you sell the right product. Corbett, Mussoorie, Nainital, Rishikesh and Auli all work in December and January. What does not work is the main Char Dham, which closes in November. Offer the winter seats circuit to pilgrims instead.

When does the Char Dham close in 2026?

Expected dates are about 10 November for Gangotri, about 11 November for Kedarnath and Yamunotri, and mid to late November for Badrinath. The official dates are announced on Vijayadashami, 20 October 2026. Do not book non-refundable travel for the last day until they are confirmed.

When does Dhikala open in Jim Corbett?

Dhikala, Durgadevi, Sonanadi and Pakhro open on 15 November and run until 15 June. Bijrani is scheduled from 15 October. Jhirna and Dhela are open throughout the year.

Will my clients see snow in Mussoorie or Nainital?

Possibly, but not reliably. Both get snow in some winters, mostly between late December and February, and none at all in others. Auli is the safer bet for snow in January and February.

Is the Auli ropeway working this winter?

The Joshimath–Auli ropeway has been shut since January 2023. The road from Jyotirmath is the only access, and it can close after heavy snow, so keep a buffer day in any Auli itinerary and check status before travel.

Do clients driving their own car into Uttarakhand pay a green cess?

Yes, if the car is registered in another state. The cess is deducted automatically from FASTag at border points. The reported rate is ₹80 for a light private vehicle. Electric, CNG and hybrid vehicles and two-wheelers are exempt.
