Short answer: Ranthambore National Park sits about 180 km south-east of Jaipur and slots into the Golden Triangle as a two-night stop between Agra and Jaipur: Delhi → Agra → Ranthambore → Jaipur → Delhi in 7–8 days. The park is open from 1 October to 30 June, safaris run at dawn and mid-afternoon, and the 12466 Ranthambore Express links Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur in about 2 hours 20 minutes. Book safaris 60–90 days ahead for October–March.

Quick answer (checked 30 October 2026)

  • Route: Delhi (2 nights) → Agra (1) → Ranthambore (2) → Jaipur (2) → Delhi. 7 nights, 8 days.
  • Agra to Ranthambore: about 280 km by road via Bharatpur and Dausa, 5–6 hours; a car is the practical choice.
  • Ranthambore to Jaipur: about 180 km by road (3–3.5 h) or the 12466 Ranthambore Express the other way, Jaipur 10:02 → Sawai Madhopur 12:25 daily (RailMitra).
  • Season: park open 1 October–30 June; closed for the monsoon July–September, though some buffer zones may open. Best sightings March–May in the heat; best comfort November–February.
  • Safari slots (Oct–Jan): 06:30–10:00 and 14:30–18:00, shifting earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon as the year warms.
  • Fees: from 1 April 2026 a shared gypsy seat is about ₹3,025 per foreign visitor and a canter seat about ₹2,400 (Rajasthan forest department, reported by Patrika, 6 June 2026); private gypsy bookings cost more.

Why add Ranthambore to the Golden Triangle?

Because it is the one tiger reserve that lies almost on the route. Ranthambore is in Sawai Madhopur district, between Agra and Jaipur if you take the southern road, and it has three things going for it that other reserves do not. The tigers are used to vehicles and often seen in daylight; the park is dry deciduous forest with open lakes rather than dense jungle, so when a tiger is there you can actually see it; and the ruined 10th-century Ranthambore Fort rises from the middle of the park, with temples, gateways and langurs on the walls. A two-night stop with three safaris gives most visitors a reasonable chance of a tiger and a certainty of sambar, spotted deer, crocodiles, and a lot of birds.

We should be honest about the odds. Tiger sightings are never guaranteed, zone allocation is random when you book through the state system, and a cold January morning can produce nothing but deer. Our clients who treat the safari as a day in a beautiful forest with a chance of a tiger go home happy; those who treat it as a tiger-delivery service sometimes do not. Our tiger safari India guide explains how the booking system, zones and vehicles work in detail, so this page keeps to how Ranthambore fits the triangle.

Where does Ranthambore fit: before or after Jaipur?

After Agra and before Jaipur is the natural order. From Agra the road runs west through Bharatpur (home of the Keoladeo bird sanctuary, a worthwhile hour’s stop in winter), south-west past Dausa and down to Sawai Madhopur, about 280 km and 5–6 hours. From Ranthambore to Jaipur is a shorter 180 km on NH-21 via Tonk, 3–3.5 hours, or the train. That puts the long drive in the middle of the trip and leaves the easy Jaipur–Delhi leg for the end.

The alternative, Jaipur → Ranthambore → Jaipur or Delhi, works if you have already booked a Jaipur hotel for consecutive nights, and it has the advantage of the 10:02 Ranthambore Express from Jaipur. The disadvantage is backtracking: you either return to Jaipur or face a long drive or train from Sawai Madhopur to Delhi (about 360 km). For a trip continuing south into Rajasthan, Ranthambore → Bundi → Udaipur is a fine road; our Jaipur to Udaipur guide and Rajasthan itinerary cover that extension.

The 8-day Golden Triangle with Ranthambore, day by day

Day Route and distance What you do Night
1 Arrive Delhi Airport pick-up, rest, evening in Connaught Place Delhi
2 Delhi Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate Delhi
3 Delhi → Agra, 230 km, 3–4 h 06:00 Shatabdi or expressway; Agra Fort; Mehtab Bagh at sunset Agra
4 Agra → Ranthambore, 280 km, 5–6 h Taj Mahal at sunrise; Fatehpur Sikri or Keoladeo on the way; arrive for the afternoon safari if timings allow, otherwise a sunset at the fort Ranthambore
5 Ranthambore Morning safari; rest; afternoon safari; or swap one safari for the fort and the Ganesh temple Ranthambore
6 Ranthambore → Jaipur, 180 km, 3–3.5 h Optional third safari at dawn; drive to Jaipur by lunch; City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, bazaars Jaipur
7 Jaipur Amer Fort at 08:00, Jaigarh, Jal Mahal, Nahargarh sunset Jaipur
8 Jaipur → Delhi, 270–280 km Car (3.5–5 h) or 12016 Shatabdi 17:35 → New Delhi 22:30; airport drop Depart or Delhi

With a ninth day, add a second night in Agra or Delhi; with only seven, drop Day 2 in Delhi and do the old city on the morning of Day 8 instead. Our 7-day Golden Triangle itinerary shows the shorter version, and our things to do in Jaipur guide helps you choose what to keep on Days 6 and 7. Set the whole plan so the Taj Mahal morning is not a Friday, when it is closed (ASI).

How do you get from Jaipur to Ranthambore by train or road?

By train, the obvious choice is the 12466 Ranthambore Express (Intercity), which leaves Jaipur Junction at 10:02 and reaches Sawai Madhopur at 12:25 every day (RailMitra timetable, checked 30 October 2026); its return pair, the 12465, runs back to Jaipur in the evening. Several Mumbai-bound expresses also stop at Sawai Madhopur, so there are departures through the day; book a Chair Car or AC seat on IRCTC, or ask us to. Sawai Madhopur station is about 10 km from the park gates, and every lodge arranges pick-up. Our guide to Indian train classes explains the seat types.

By road, NH-21 from Jaipur through Tonk is about 180 km and takes 3–3.5 hours in a car; the surface is good apart from the last stretch into town. From Agra, the road via Bharatpur and Dausa is about 280 km and 5–6 hours, with no sensible train alternative that fits a sightseeing day. If you are coming from Delhi directly, it is about 360 km by road, or there are overnight and daytime trains on the Delhi–Mumbai line that stop at Sawai Madhopur; the car is still better because it carries on to Jaipur with you.

When is the best time for Ranthambore on a Golden Triangle trip?

The park is open from 1 October to 30 June and closed for the monsoon from July to September (the forest department has in recent years kept some buffer zones open in the monsoon, but do not plan a trip around it). Within the season there is a trade-off between comfort and sightings.

Months Safari slots (approx.) Conditions Tiger odds
October–January 06:30–10:00 and 14:30–18:00 Cold mornings (near 5°C in Dec–Jan, take a fleece and gloves), pleasant days, lush after the rains, busiest with visitors Moderate; thick grass hides animals early in the season
February–March 06:00–09:30 and 15:00–18:30 Warm days, cool mornings, forest drying out, the best balance for most visitors Good
April–June 05:30–09:00 and 15:30–19:00 Very hot (40°C-plus afternoons), dusty, few tourists, animals gather at water Best of the year, at a price in comfort
July–September Core zones closed Monsoon; some buffer zones may open, check before planning Low

Slot times are the 2026 schedule as published by operators working the park; the forest department adjusts them by a few minutes with the sunrise, so confirm on your permit. For the rest of the loop, our month-by-month Golden Triangle guide covers Delhi, Agra and Jaipur weather.

How many safaris should you book, and what do they cost?

Three is our standard for a two-night stop: afternoon on arrival, morning and afternoon the next day, with the third morning optional before driving to Jaipur. Each safari is about three and a half hours in an open six-seat gypsy (jeep) or a 20-seat canter. The gypsy is quieter, lower and better for photography; the canter is cheaper and fine for families who want the shared experience.

Fees rose 10% from 1 April 2026. For foreign visitors a seat in a shared gypsy now costs about ₹3,025 (roughly US$32) and a canter seat about ₹2,400 (US$25), including park entry, guide and vehicle (Rajasthan forest department tariff as reported by Patrika, 6 June 2026). Booking a full gypsy privately, which most of our clients prefer, costs the six-seat total plus a small premium. Permits are issued through the state’s online system up to 90 days in advance, zone allocation is by the system, and the popular winter dates sell out within days of release; this is the one part of the Golden Triangle we insist on booking as soon as your dates are fixed. The detail is in our tiger safari guide, and our Golden Triangle cost guide shows where a two-night Ranthambore stop lands in the overall budget: typically ₹20,000–₹35,000 per person extra at mid-range, more at the lodges that have become destinations in themselves.

What else is there to do at Ranthambore?

Ranthambore Fort, inside the park but outside the safari permit system, is open to visitors without a safari booking: a steep climb through seven gateways to a plateau of ruined palaces, water tanks and the Trinetra Ganesh temple, which draws pilgrims on foot past the same lakes the tigers drink from. Allow two to three hours and go early. Below the fort, the Dastkar craft centre sells block prints and embroidery from village women’s cooperatives, a good place for presents. Our drivers can also take you to the Chambal river at Palighat, about 40 km away, for a boat ride past gharial crocodiles and river birds, a fine half day if you have a spare afternoon and the safari quota is full.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Ranthambore from Jaipur and Agra?

Ranthambore is about 180 km from Jaipur, 3–3.5 hours by road on NH-21 via Tonk, or about 2 hours 20 minutes on the 12466 Ranthambore Express (Jaipur 10:02, Sawai Madhopur 12:25). From Agra it is about 280 km by road via Bharatpur and Dausa, 5–6 hours, with no convenient train for a sightseeing day.

How many days should I add for Ranthambore?

Two nights, giving three safaris (afternoon on arrival, morning and afternoon the next day) and a visit to Ranthambore Fort. One night with two safaris is the absolute minimum and leaves no margin for a quiet morning. A full Golden Triangle with Ranthambore runs 7–8 days.

When is Ranthambore open?

The park opens on 1 October and closes on 30 June, with the core zones shut for the monsoon from July to September. Morning safaris start at about 06:30 in winter and 05:30 in summer, afternoon safaris at about 14:30 in winter and 15:30 in summer, each lasting around three and a half hours.

Am I guaranteed to see a tiger?

No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Ranthambore has some of the best daytime sightings in India, and three safaris over two nights give most visitors a reasonable chance, but zones are allocated by the booking system and animals do not keep appointments. Treat it as a day in a remarkable forest with a tiger as the bonus.

How much does a Ranthambore safari cost for foreigners?

From 1 April 2026, a seat in a shared gypsy costs about ₹3,025 per foreign visitor and a canter seat about ₹2,400, including park entry, guide and vehicle, after a 10% rise reported by Patrika on 6 June 2026. A private six-seat gypsy costs the seat total plus a premium. Permits open 90 days ahead and winter dates sell out fast.

Can I do Ranthambore as a day trip from Jaipur?

Technically, by leaving Jaipur at 03:00 for the morning safari and returning after lunch, but we do not recommend it. You get one safari, no fort, and seven hours in a car. If time is that short, skip Ranthambore and do the Golden Triangle properly; if you can spare one night, that is far better than a day trip.
