Delhi to Rishikesh for International Travellers: Train, Car or Bus?

Delhi to Rishikesh is about 240 km. The most comfortable option for international visitors is a morning train to Haridwar (the 06:45 Dehradun Shatabdi, 4 h 50 m) followed by a 45-minute taxi, or a private car door to door in 5–6 hours, now a little quicker since the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway opened fully in April 2026.

Short answer: Delhi to Rishikesh is about 240 km. The Vande Bharat is the fastest train but arrives after dark. Buses are cheap; flying to Dehradun rarely saves time.

Quick answer (checked 23 October 2026)

  • Best overall: 12017 Dehradun Shatabdi, New Delhi 06:45 → Haridwar 11:35, daily, chair car about ₹830 / US$9; then taxi 45–60 minutes to Rishikesh (IRCTC timetable via ConfirmTkt, checked 23 Oct 2026).
  • Fastest train: 22457 Vande Bharat, Anand Vihar 17:50 → Haridwar 21:11 (3 h 21 m), no service on Thursdays; evening arrival, so plan the taxi ahead.
  • Only direct train to Rishikesh: 19031 Yoga Express, Old Delhi 05:05 → Yog Nagari Rishikesh 12:25, daily, 1A/2A/3A/SL.
  • Private car: 5–6 hours hotel to hotel; the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway (fully open since 14 April 2026) cuts the first half of the drive.
  • Bus: from Kashmere Gate ISBT, 5.5–7 hours, from about US$6; useful but not restful.
  • Flight: Delhi to Dehradun (Jolly Grant), about an hour in the air; the airport is 21 km from Rishikesh.

How far is Rishikesh from Delhi, and how long does it take?

Rishikesh sits where the Ganges leaves the Himalayan foothills, about 240 km north-east of Delhi by the traditional NH334 road through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee and Haridwar. Door to door, a private car takes 5–6 hours depending on how long it takes to clear Delhi. Trains run to Haridwar (25 km short of Rishikesh) in 3 h 20 m to 5 hours, and one daily express continues to the newer Yog Nagari Rishikesh station. There is no airport in Rishikesh; Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport is 21 km away.

Almost every route ends with a short road transfer; build that last leg into the plan and the journey is easy. Rishikesh is also the start of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit, so trains are busy from April to early November; our Char Dham guide for overseas visitors covers that onward route.

Which train should you take from Delhi to Rishikesh?

For most visitors the 12017 Dehradun Shatabdi is the right train. It leaves New Delhi (NDLS) at 06:45 and reaches Haridwar Junction (HW) at 11:35, daily, with chair car (CC) and executive chair (EC) and a hot breakfast served at your seat. You are in Rishikesh in time for lunch and can see the evening aarti the same day. The return 12018 leaves Haridwar at 18:07 and reaches New Delhi at 22:50.

The 22457 Vande Bharat is quicker, Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT) 17:50 to Haridwar 21:11, but it does not run on Thursdays and it arrives after dark, so have your taxi arranged in advance. The return 22458 (Haridwar 08:09 → Anand Vihar 11:45) is actually the more useful direction: it gets you back to Delhi by noon. Anand Vihar is in east Delhi, 30–60 minutes from Connaught Place depending on traffic.

If you want to step off the train in Rishikesh itself, the only daily option is the 19031 Yoga Express from Old Delhi (DLI) at 05:05, reaching Haridwar at 11:20 and Yog Nagari Rishikesh (YNRK) at 12:25. It is a long-distance train from Ahmedabad, so it can run late; book 2A or 1A. Yog Nagari Rishikesh station opened in 2020 on the southern edge of town, a short taxi or auto ride from Triveni Ghat and 20 minutes or so from the Ram Jhula and Tapovan area where most retreats are. The Mussoorie Express (14341, Old Delhi 22:25 → Haridwar 05:50) is the overnight choice, with 1A and 2A, but it has a reputation for running behind time.

Booking: foreigners register on IRCTC with an international mobile number (one-off ₹100 plus GST verification fee) and pay with an international card. Reservations open 60 days ahead; the Foreign Tourist Quota (1A, 2A and EC only) opens up to 365 days ahead and is the way to secure the Shatabdi’s executive class at busy times. Our first-time India travel guide walks through the booking screens, or we can simply book for you.

What is driving from Delhi to Rishikesh like, and is the expressway open?

Yes. The 210 km Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, from Akshardham in east Delhi to the Dehradun outskirts, became fully operational on 14 April 2026 after the Prime Minister’s inauguration (Swarajya and Outlook Business, 14 April 2026). It is 12 lanes out of Delhi, six lanes through western Uttar Pradesh past Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur, and finishes with a 12 km elevated wildlife corridor through Rajaji National Park and the Daat Kali tunnel. The headline claim is 2.5 hours Delhi to Dehradun, against six or more on the old road.

For Rishikesh the maths is slightly different. Rishikesh is east of the expressway’s northern end, so drivers either leave the expressway in the Saharanpur–Ganeshpur area for the Roorkee–Haridwar road, or run through to Dehradun and double back 45 km. Which is faster depends on the day, and your driver will know; allow 4.5–5.5 hours hotel to hotel and treat anything quicker as a bonus. The classic NH334 route via Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee still works and passes Haridwar, which is handy if you want to stop at Har Ki Pauri on the way. Tolls are charged on both routes and are usually included in a car-with-driver quote; confirm this when you book.

We advise against self-drive on this corridor; farm traffic entering from the left and motorbikes against the flow make it tiring for first-time visitors. A car with a local driver lets you leave when you like. A sedan suits two people; an Innova or similar SUV is better for three or four with bags.

Should you take the bus from Delhi to Rishikesh?

Buses are the budget workhorse of this route. Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) ordinary and AC coaches, plus private Volvo and sleeper operators including FlixBus, leave Kashmere Gate ISBT through the day and overnight, with roughly 70 departures a day listed and fares from about US$6 one way (Busbud, October 2026). Journey time is 5.5–7 hours and buses stop at Rishikesh bus stand, about 2 km from Triveni Ghat. Choose a daytime AC coach rather than an overnight sleeper: roads are safer in daylight and you arrive at a civilised hour. Booking sites may need an Indian mobile number for the OTP; your Delhi hotel can book for you, or buy at the ISBT counter.

Is it worth flying from Delhi to Rishikesh?

Usually not. The nearest airport is Dehradun’s Jolly Grant (DED), 21 km from Rishikesh, and flights from Delhi take about an hour with several airlines each day. Add 90 minutes at Delhi airport, the drive to the airport and 35–45 minutes from Jolly Grant into Rishikesh and you are at roughly four hours, similar to the Vande Bharat and dearer than the Shatabdi. Fly if you are connecting straight from an international arrival at Delhi. Otherwise the train wins.

What should you do once you arrive in Rishikesh?

Two evenings cover the essentials. The Ganga aarti at Triveni Ghat, the main town ghat, happens at dusk every day, around 17:30–18:30 in winter and 18:30–19:30 in summer (timings follow sunset; arrive 20–30 minutes early for a riverside spot). It is free. Upstream, Parmarth Niketan ashram on the east bank near Ram Jhula holds its own sunset aarti with ashram students around a Shiva statue by the river; it is calmer and more musical, also free, with a donation box. Parmarth hosts the International Yoga Festival each March; confirm the 2027 dates before planning around it.

For yoga, the Tapovan and Laxman Jhula area north of Ram Jhula has most of the drop-in studios and teacher-training schools; our Rishikesh yoga retreat guide explains how to choose one and what a week costs. Rafting on the Ganges normally runs from autumn to early summer and is closed in the monsoon; operators set exact dates with the Uttarakhand authorities each season. The Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia) is open in daylight hours for a ticket. Haridwar’s Har Ki Pauri aarti, 25 km south, is the larger, louder version and easy to add on the way back to the station.

A simple three-day plan from Delhi

  1. Day 1: 06:45 Dehradun Shatabdi to Haridwar (11:35), taxi to Rishikesh by 12:45, lunch in Tapovan, afternoon walk across Ram Jhula, Parmarth Niketan aarti at sunset.
  2. Day 2: early yoga class, Beatles Ashram in the morning, rafting or a riverside afternoon, Triveni Ghat aarti in the evening.
  3. Day 3: morning free, taxi to Haridwar for Har Ki Pauri, then 12018 Shatabdi at 18:07 back to New Delhi (22:50), or the 08:09 Vande Bharat if you prefer to be back by lunchtime.

Our two-week India itinerary shows where it fits, and our guides to Delhi to Shimla and Delhi to Amritsar cover the other classic rail days out of the capital.

When is the best time to travel from Delhi to Rishikesh?

October to April. In October and November days are warm (highs around 28–32 °C) and nights pleasant; December and January bring crisp sunny days near 20 °C and cold nights of 5–8 °C in the valley (IMD climate normals for Dehradun, the nearest station), with morning fog that can delay trains out of Delhi by an hour or more. February and March are ideal: mild and clear. April and May heat up to 35 °C or more; this is also when Char Dham traffic begins and Haridwar trains fill. Avoid late June to mid-September if you can: the monsoon swells the Ganges, rafting stops, and the hill roads beyond Rishikesh suffer landslides. For the wider calendar see our best time to visit India guide, and check the Char Dham closing dates if you plan to continue into the mountains in autumn.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Rishikesh from Delhi?

About 240 km by the NH334 road through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee and Haridwar, which takes 5–6 hours by car. Using the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway, open fully since April 2026, can trim that to 4.5–5.5 hours depending on where you leave it. By train it is 3 h 20 m to 5 hours to Haridwar, then 25 km by road, or 7 h 20 m direct on the Yoga Express.

Is there a direct train from Delhi to Rishikesh?

One daily express: the 19031 Yoga Express from Old Delhi at 05:05, arriving Yog Nagari Rishikesh at 12:25, with 1A, 2A, 3A and sleeper classes. Every other fast train, including the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat, stops at Haridwar, 25 km away, from where a taxi takes 45–60 minutes. Most visitors find Haridwar plus taxi quicker overall than the direct train.

Which Delhi station do the Rishikesh trains leave from?

The Dehradun Shatabdi and Jan Shatabdi leave from New Delhi (NDLS) near Paharganj and Connaught Place. The Vande Bharat leaves from Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT) in east Delhi, 30–60 minutes from the centre. The Yoga Express and Mussoorie Express leave from Old Delhi (DLI), beside the Red Fort. Check your ticket carefully; the three are far apart.

Is the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway open, and does it help for Rishikesh?

Yes. The 210 km expressway from Akshardham to Dehradun became fully operational on 14 April 2026. It cuts the Delhi–Dehradun drive to roughly 2.5 hours, but Rishikesh lies east of its northern end, so your driver either exits near Saharanpur for the Roorkee–Haridwar road or continues to Dehradun and doubles back 45 km. Expect 4.5–5.5 hours hotel to hotel.

What time is the Ganga aarti in Rishikesh?

At dusk every evening. Triveni Ghat’s aarti runs roughly 17:30–18:30 in winter and 18:30–19:30 in summer, following sunset. Parmarth Niketan’s aarti on the Ram Jhula side also begins around sunset. Both are free; arrive 20–30 minutes early for a riverside seat. Timings shift with the season, so confirm with your hotel on arrival.

Can I go from Delhi to Rishikesh and back in a day?

Technically yes, using the 06:45 Shatabdi out and the 18:07 Shatabdi back from Haridwar, but it leaves only four or five hours in Rishikesh and no evening aarti. Two nights is the sensible minimum: one evening at Parmarth Niketan, one at Triveni Ghat, with a morning for yoga or the Beatles Ashram in between.
