Short answer: The things to do in Goa that reward a long-haul flight are the Portuguese churches of Old Goa and the painted lanes of Fontainhas in Panaji, a sunset at Chapora or Cabo de Rama fort, a jeep day to Dudhsagar falls (reopened for the season in October 2026), a spice-farm lunch near Ponda, the Anjuna and Arpora markets, and the beaches themselves: Palolem and Agonda in the south for calm water, Morjim to Arambol in the north for space. Ten of our twenty are beaches, ten are not.

What are the best beaches in Goa?
Goa’s coast runs about 100 km, and the beaches change character every few kilometres. These are the ten we send guests to, from north to south.
1. Arambol. The northernmost tourist beach, with a long-stay international crowd, drum circles at sunset and the sweet-water lake behind the headland. Loose and bohemian.
2. Mandrem and Ashwem. Wide, quiet sand with boutique beach huts and yoga schools. Our pick for couples who want the north without Baga.
3. Morjim. The Chapora river mouth; a turtle-nesting beach (olive ridleys, roughly November to March) with a Russian-speaking restaurant strip. Good for long walks.
4. Vagator and Ozran. Red cliffs under Chapora fort, small coves, the hilltop clubs of the Goa trance scene. The cliff-top sunset is the best in the north.
5. Anjuna. Rocky and lively, with the Wednesday flea market and the beach clubs that replaced the hippies. Not a swimming beach at high tide.
6. Candolim and Sinquerim. The calmer end of the Calangute–Baga strip, under Fort Aguada, with the big resort hotels and the water-sports counters. Baga and Calangute next door are the crowded party beaches and we rarely recommend staying on them.
7. Agonda. A long, protected bay in the south with huts, no clubs and turtle nesting. Our favourite for a slow week.
8. Palolem. The crescent beach of the south, calm enough to kayak, with Butterfly beach and Monkey island reachable by boat and the silent headphone party on some nights. Busy in December, delightful in February.
9. Patnem and Rajbag. The quieter coves immediately south of Palolem.
10. Galgibaga and Talpona. Nearly empty turtle-nesting beaches near the Karnataka border; no shacks allowed on Galgibaga, so bring water. For how the two coasts differ for your type of trip, see North Goa vs South Goa.
Goa beaches compared
| Beach | Coast | Swimming | Vibe | Nearest airport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arambol | Far north | Good, lifeguards | Backpacker, long-stay, music | Mopa (GOX), about 30 min |
| Mandrem / Ashwem | North | Good | Boutique huts, yoga, quiet | Mopa, about 40 min |
| Vagator / Anjuna | North | Rocky; take care | Clubs, markets, cliffs | Mopa, about 45 min |
| Candolim / Calangute / Baga | North | OK, lifeguards, crowded | Resorts, water sports, nightlife | Mopa about 45 min; Dabolim about 1 h |
| Colva / Benaulim / Cavelossim | South | Good, wide | Large resort hotels, families | Dabolim (GOI), 30–45 min |
| Agonda / Palolem / Patnem | Far south | Calm bays, best in Goa | Huts, kayaks, slow | Dabolim, about 1.5 h |
Airport times are our planning estimates in normal traffic; Goa has two airports, Dabolim in the centre-south and the newer Manohar airport at Mopa in the far north, and choosing the right one for your beach saves an hour each way.
What should you see away from the beach?
11. Old Goa. The 16th-century capital of Portuguese Asia, 10 km east of Panaji. The Basilica of Bom Jesus holds the remains of St Francis Xavier; across the lawn stand the Se Cathedral, the Church of St Francis of Assisi and the museum. The group is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Churches and Convents of Goa, 1986). Go in the morning; the feast on 3 December fills the whole site.
12. Fontainhas, Panaji. The Latin quarter of the capital: ochre and blue houses with oyster-shell windows, the Chapel of St Sebastian, small galleries and cafés. An hour’s walk, best at 08:00 or after 16:00. Combine with the Mandovi riverfront and, if you must, a look at the floating casinos.
13. The forts. Fort Aguada (1612) above Candolim has the lighthouse and the best view of the Mandovi mouth; Reis Magos across the river has been restored as a gallery; Chapora, above Vagator, is a ruin with the sunset; Cabo de Rama in the south is the most atmospheric, a crumbling wall on a headland with a small church inside. All are free or nearly so and open daylight hours.
14. Dudhsagar falls. The 300 m cascade on the Karnataka border, reached by shared 4×4 jeep from Mollem through the Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary, then a short walk to the pool. Access runs roughly October to May and reopened for 2026–27 in October with revised rules on timings and numbers; see our Dudhsagar reopening guide before you go. A full day from either coast.
15. A spice plantation near Ponda. Several farms (Sahakari, Savoi and Tropical are well-known names) offer a guided walk through pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and cashew followed by a Goan lunch on banana leaf. Pairs with the Hindu temples of Ponda, such as Shanta Durga and Mangueshi, which the Portuguese era pushed inland.
16. Divar and Chorao islands. Free vehicle ferries from Old Goa and Ribandar cross the Mandovi to Divar, a quiet island of Portuguese villas and churches, and Chorao, where the Dr Salim Ali bird sanctuary’s mangrove boardwalk is best at dawn in winter. Hire a bicycle or take your car across.
17. The markets. Anjuna’s flea market runs on Wednesdays in the season (roughly November to April); the Arpora Saturday Night Market, with food stalls and live music, runs the same months; Mapusa’s Friday market is where Goans shop for chouriço sausages and cashew feni; Margao’s covered market is the southern equivalent. Market days and seasons shift year to year, so confirm locally.
18. Museums of a different kind. Goa Chitra at Benaulim is a private collection of farming and household tools that explains village Goa better than any guidebook; the Museum of Goa at Pilerne is contemporary art; the Houses of Goa museum near Porvorim covers Indo-Portuguese architecture.
19. On the water. Kayaking at Palolem (calm, rentable on the beach), dolphin-spotting boats from Sinquerim and Palolem (dolphins are usually seen; keep expectations modest), scuba and snorkelling trips to Grande Island from Vasco or Sinquerim (visibility is modest; best November to March), and a sunset cruise on the Mandovi from Panaji. Buy water-sports tickets only from the official counters at the beach entrances, as the 2026 rules fine purchases from touts.
20. Food and feni. Fish thali at a lunch-only local restaurant, pork vindaloo and sorpotel in a Catholic village taverna, bebinca for dessert, and a feni tasting at a distillery or the bars of Panaji. In our experience the best Goan food is in Margao, Panaji and the villages, not on the beach.
Day trips from Goa at a glance
| Day trip | From North Goa | From South Goa | Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old Goa and Panaji | 30–45 min | 45–75 min | Year-round | Half day; cover shoulders in churches |
| Dudhsagar by jeep | About 2 h to Mollem | About 1.5 h | Oct–May | Full day; numbers capped, go early |
| Ponda spice farm and temples | About 1.5 h | About 1 h | Year-round; lush in monsoon | Combine with Dudhsagar if you start at 07:00 |
| Divar and Chorao islands | 30–45 min to the ferry | About 1 h | Nov–Mar for birds | Dawn for the sanctuary |
| Cabo de Rama and Cola beach | About 2 h | 30–45 min from Palolem | Year-round | Afternoon and sunset |
| Cotigao sanctuary and Galgibaga | About 2.5 h | About 30 min from Palolem | Nov–Mar | Turtle nesting; no shacks |
Drive times are our planning estimates; Goa’s roads are narrow and the Christmas fortnight doubles them. A car with driver for a day costs far less than three separate taxis and lets you combine trips; see our private driver guide.
How many days do you need, and when?
Four nights covers one coast’s beaches, Old Goa and Panaji, and one day trip. A week lets you split north and south or add Dudhsagar and the islands. November to February is the season for everything on this list; the markets and Dudhsagar close in the monsoon and the shacks come down by late May. Our best time to visit Goa guide has the month-by-month detail and Goa in December the Christmas specifics.
Our 4-day romantic Goa trip, adventure Goa trip and 7-day Goa itinerary are priced on request once we know your dates and hotel grade; all run with a private car and driver and can be joined to Kerala or the Golden Triangle. For budget planning, see our budget vs luxury Goa guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best thing to do in Goa besides beaches?
Old Goa and Fontainhas. The Basilica of Bom Jesus, the Se Cathedral and the other UNESCO-listed churches of the old capital are a morning, and the painted Latin quarter of Panaji is an hour’s walk nearby. Add a spice-farm lunch near Ponda and you have the best non-beach day in the state.
Is Dudhsagar falls open?
Yes, for the 2026–27 season. Jeep access through the Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary from Mollem reopened in October 2026 with revised rules on timings and visitor numbers, and normally runs until May. It closes in the monsoon when the trail floods. Check our Dudhsagar reopening guide for the current rules before planning the day.
Which Goa beach is best for swimming?
Palolem and Agonda in the south. Both are protected bays with calm water from November to March and lifeguards on duty. In the north, Mandrem and Arambol are good; Anjuna and Vagator are rocky. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches and never in the monsoon, when red flags fly and currents are strong.
When are the Anjuna and Arpora markets held?
Anjuna’s flea market is on Wednesdays and the Arpora Saturday Night Market on Saturday evenings, both only in the tourist season from roughly November to April. Mapusa’s Friday market and Margao’s municipal market run all year. Dates and opening weeks shift annually, so confirm with your hotel.
Can you drink on the beach in Goa?
Only inside licensed shacks and restaurants. Since August 2026 the tourism department can fine ₹5,000 to ₹1 lakh for drinking in non-permitted areas, cooking or littering on the sand, driving on beaches and buying water sports from unofficial counters (Business Today, 3 Aug 2026). Carry rubbish away and use the official counters.
Which airport should you fly into for Goa?
Dabolim (GOI) for South Goa, Candolim and Panaji; Manohar airport at Mopa (GOX) for Arambol, Mandrem, Morjim, Vagator and Anjuna. The two are about 1.5–2.5 hours apart by road, so landing at the wrong one for your beach adds a long transfer. Check which airport your flight uses before booking a hotel.
