Dudhsagar Falls Reopens October 2026: Rules and Timings

Dudhsagar Falls reopened on 3 October 2026. The Goa Forest Department’s order caps the circuit at 240 jeep trips a day, opens the Collem gate from 8 am to 3 pm, requires online booking through GTDC and makes life jackets compulsory. Here is what that means for your Goa trip.

Dudhsagar Falls in Goa is open to tourists again. On Saturday, 3 October 2026, the Goa Forest Department issued an order opening the Dudhsagar eco-tourism circuit for the 2026-27 season with immediate effect. The rules this season are tighter than many returning visitors will remember. Only jeeps registered with the forest department can take you in, and bookings are made online through a portal run by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC). Trips are capped at 240 a day, the Collem entry gate runs only from 8 am to 3 pm, and you cannot enter the falls without a life jacket. If you were planning to walk in along the railway track, that is now explicitly prohibited.

Below is what the order says, what it means for a Goa trip in October and November, and the questions travellers are asking right now. Facts are as reported on 4 and 5 October 2026; sources are listed at the end.

What changed on 3 October 2026

Dudhsagar sits inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park on the Goa–Karnataka border, and the jeep circuit closes every monsoon. This year’s reopening order, as reported by The Times of India, sets out these rules:

  • Online booking only. Vehicles are booked online through a government-authorised portal run by GTDC.
  • Entry gate hours: 8 am to 3 pm. The Bhagwan Mahavir National Park gate at Collem lets visitors in in batches of 30 to 40 people at hourly intervals. The department says this is meant to match the parking space at the site and stop overcrowding.
  • 240 trips a day. The daily cap follows a recommendation from the State Board for Wildlife.
  • Registered vehicles only. Private cars and two-wheelers cannot go past the entry gate. Only vehicles registered with the Goa Forest Department may run the circuit.
  • Seven adults per vehicle, at most.
  • Life jackets are mandatory for anyone entering the falls. Forest guards, nature guides, support staff and lifeguards will be deployed by the forest department, the Goa Forest Development Corporation and GTDC, and visitors must follow their directions.
  • No entry from the railway track. Walking in along the rail line is strictly prohibited.
  • No plastic and no alcohol. Plastic water bottles and carry bags are banned inside the sanctuary and national park. Anyone found carrying alcohol, or under its influence, faces strict action.
  • A compulsory 15-minute stop at the nature interpretation centre at the Collem gate. Jeep operators have to give an undertaking that their passengers get this time there.
  • Weather can cancel your day. The department can call off the activity on any day for valid reasons, including orange or red alerts from IMD Goa. For the first 15 days, and during yellow alerts, extra staff will be posted at the Collem river crossing and at the falls.

Operators also carry new obligations. They must keep staff and vehicles on standby at the Collem river crossing, and speeding or rash driving can get their permits suspended or cancelled.

What this means for your trip

The rules are mostly about safety and crowd control, but they change how you should plan a Dudhsagar day.

1. The real constraint is the 3 pm gate, not the falls

The gate closes to new batches at 3 pm. Most people staying in Goa are based on the North Goa coast, at Calangute, Baga, Candolim or Anjuna, which is a long drive from Collem in the east of the state. A late-morning start from the beach belt leaves you with very little margin. Plan Dudhsagar as a full day, leave early, and keep the evening light. When we build a week-long North and South Goa itinerary, Dudhsagar gets a day of its own for exactly this reason. It is not something to squeeze in on the way to a beach.

2. Capacity is finite, so weekends will fill first

Do the arithmetic on the order: 240 trips a day, with no more than seven adults per vehicle, gives a ceiling of roughly 1,680 adults a day on the circuit. That is our calculation, not an official figure. October brings Dussehra (Karnataka’s Mysore Dasara runs 11 to 21 October), and the Diwali weekend falls in early November. Goa’s peak season runs into Christmas and New Year, so expect weekend and holiday slots to go first. If your dates are fixed, book the jeep as soon as your Goa dates are confirmed, not on the morning you want to go.

3. Build in a weather buffer

The forest department can cancel the circuit on any day with an orange or red IMD alert, and extra caution applies on yellow-alert days. Don’t put Dudhsagar on your last day in Goa. Put it early in the trip, so a cancelled day can move to another one. Check the IMD Goa forecast the evening before you go.

4. Pack for the rules

Leave plastic water bottles and carry bags behind and bring a steel or reusable bottle. Alcohol is off the table for the whole day, including in the jeep. Wear clothes and footwear you don’t mind getting wet, because you will be in a life jacket if you go near the water. Families should note the seven-adults-per-vehicle limit when working out how many jeeps the group needs.

5. Flights into Goa cost a little more from 6 October

One more thing for anyone pricing a Goa trip this week: IndiGo has announced higher fuel surcharges from 6 October 2026, adding ₹100 to ₹350 to domestic fares depending on distance (Herald Goa and The New Indian Express, both 5 October). That is small on a single ticket but adds up for a family of four on a return trip, so it is worth locking flights sooner rather than later. Our Goa trip cost breakdown for 2026 shows where flights sit in an overall budget.

Dudhsagar in the wider Goa season

The falls reopening is one of the signs that Goa’s season has properly started. The monsoon greenery is still at its best in October, and the waterfall carries more water early in the season than it does by spring. If you are deciding between destinations this month, our guide to the best places to visit in India in October 2026 compares Goa with the hills and the north.

For a ground operator, the practical change this season is that a Dudhsagar day now has a fixed shape: book online, start early, arrive at Collem inside the gate window, spend the compulsory 15 minutes at the interpretation centre, ride the jeep in, and be back before the evening. If you would rather not juggle the booking portal, the gate timing and the transfer from your hotel yourself, our Goa tour packages can plan the day around the rules. Call or WhatsApp 7087488961.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dudhsagar Falls open now?

Yes. The Goa Forest Department’s order opening the Dudhsagar eco-tourism circuit for 2026-27 was issued on Saturday, 3 October 2026, with immediate effect. The department can still close it on individual days, including days with an IMD orange or red alert, so check on the day.

What are the Dudhsagar timings for 2026?

The entry gate of Bhagwan Mahavir National Park at Collem is open from 8 am to 3 pm. Visitors go in in batches of 30 to 40 at hourly intervals.

How do I book the Dudhsagar jeep safari?

Online, through the government-authorised portal run by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC). Only jeeps registered with the Goa Forest Department can run the circuit. We have not independently confirmed the portal’s web address or the 2026-27 jeep fare, so use GTDC’s official channels and be wary of anyone selling “direct entry” passes.

Can I drive my own car or scooter to Dudhsagar?

Not into the circuit. Private vehicles and two-wheelers are not allowed past the entry gate at Collem. You can reach Collem on your own, then you must switch to a registered jeep.

Can I walk to Dudhsagar along the railway track?

No. The 2026-27 order strictly prohibits entry to the falls from the railway track.

Can I swim at Dudhsagar?

You cannot enter the falls without a life jacket. Lifeguards and forest staff will be deployed, and their instructions must be followed.

How many people can go in one jeep?

A maximum of seven adults per vehicle.

Is October a good time to see Dudhsagar?

October is the start of the season, and the falls usually carry more water now than later in the dry months. The trade-off is weather: early-season days can still bring IMD alerts, which is why we suggest keeping a buffer day in your Goa plan.
