Best Time to Visit Kashmir
Four very different seasons — and the travel advice to read first.
Kashmir changes completely through the year: spring gardens, warm summers, dry autumn days and a hard, snowy winter. Here is each month with official climate numbers for Srinagar, the dates that shape a trip — starting with what the UK and US governments currently advise. Written by a travel company based in the Himalaya.
- 24.2 °C 75.6 °F — July, Srinagar's warmest month
- 2.5 °C 36.5 °F — January, the coldest
- 21 Dec–31 Jan Chillai Kalan, the hardest winter weeks
- Checked 25 Oct 2026
When is the best time to visit Kashmir?
The best time to visit Kashmir depends on what you want: March–April for the Srinagar tulip garden, May–June and September–October for mild, drier days, and mid-December to February for snow. July is the warmest month (24.2 °C / 75.6 °F in Srinagar). Read first: the UK advises against all travel to Jammu and Kashmir and the US rates it Level 4. Ask us for a quote.
Before you choose a month: what governments advise about Kashmir
The UK FCDO advises against all travel to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, and names Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, the city of Srinagar and the Jammu–Srinagar national highway; the only exceptions are flying to and from Jammu city and travel within Jammu city (updated 7 Oct 2026, checked 25 Oct 2026). The US State Department rates Jammu and Kashmir ‘Level 4: Do not travel’, except visits to the eastern Ladakh region and Leh (checked 25 Oct 2026). The FCDO also warns: ‘Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).’ Check your own government’s latest advice and your insurer’s terms before you book — if they rule Kashmir out, we will happily plan the same season in Himachal instead.
We don’t tell you the advice is wrong or out of date, and we don’t promise any destination is safe. We share the official advice with dates, and we plan only what you decide is right for you.

The four seasons, in short
Spring (March–April)
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden sits at the foot of the Zabarwan range above Dal Lake, with about 1.5–1.75 million bulbs of some 70–75 varieties; it opened for the 2026 season in March. March is also Srinagar’s wettest month, so pack layers and a rain jacket.
Summer (May–August)
The warmest stretch: Srinagar averages 18–24 °C (64–76 °F). July and August overlap the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage (2026: 3 July–28 August), when roads towards Sonamarg get busy — plan around it.
Autumn (September–November)
The driest months: October averages just 23 mm (0.9 in) of rain in Srinagar and 14.4 °C (57.9 °F). Nights turn cold by November.
Winter (December–February)
Chillai Kalan, the 40 hardest winter days, runs 21 December–31 January, followed by Chillai Khurd and Chillai Bachha to early March. Gulmarg’s ski season usually runs mid-December to mid-April — see our Gulmarg skiing guide.
Which month suits which trip
Three common reasons people look at Kashmir, and the months that fit each.
- Flowers and gardensLate March to April for the tulip garden. Confirm the garden’s opening dates for your year before you fix flights.
- Mild weather and lakesMay–June or September–October. September and October are drier; avoid July–August if you want quieter roads.
- SnowMid-December to February, with Chillai Kalan (21 Dec–31 Jan) the coldest weeks. Skiers look at Gulmarg from mid-December to mid-April; read our Kashmir in December notes too.
If the advice rules Kashmir out: the same seasons in Himachal
Himachal Pradesh is our home region, and it is not covered by the Kashmir advisories quoted above. It offers mountain scenery in every season, and the hill towns get snow from December to February.
