Trains vs Flights in India
Train, plane or car?
India is big, and the right way to cross it changes with every leg of your trip. Here is how foreign visitors book Indian trains (up to 365 days ahead), when a domestic flight saves a day, what winter fog does to both — and the legs where a private car beats them.
- 365 days train booking window for foreigners
- 7 classes from sleeper to executive
- Passport your ID on trains and planes
- 20% deposit full refund within 48 h
Should I take trains or flights in India?
Use trains for short and medium legs such as Delhi–Agra or the Kalka–Shimla mountain railway: foreigners can book on IRCTC up to 365 days ahead with a passport and an international card. Fly the long cross-country legs. Take a private car where you want stops or the mountains. Suzu Travels plans the mix and quotes cars on request.

Train, flight or car: what we suggest leg by leg
There is no single answer for India. These are the legs first-time visitors ask us about most, and how we usually plan them.
Our usual pick by leg — train, flight or car. Check IRCTC or the airline for current schedules.
| Leg | Our usual pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi – Agra | Train or private car | Agra is 204 km (127 mi) from Delhi by road. A morning train is quick; a car is easier with luggage and lets you add stops. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays — plan the day around that. |
| Agra – Jaipur | Private car with stops | 232 km (144 mi) by road, with Fatehpur Sikri and the Abhaneri stepwell on the way. Trains run too — see our Agra to Jaipur guide. |
| Delhi – Shimla | Train, then the mountain railway — or a car | The Kalka–Shimla railway climbs 96 km (60 mi) into the hills and is part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India. Slow and scenic; a car is faster door to door. |
| Delhi – Dharamshala / Manali | Fly, or a private car | Kangra (Gaggal) airport is about 14 km (9 mi) from Dharamshala; Bhuntar airport about 50 km (31 mi) from Manali. Small mountain airports — weather can delay flights, so keep a spare day or go by road. |
| Long cross-country legs | Fly | Delhi to Kerala, Goa, Varanasi or the Andaman Islands are long distances — a domestic flight saves one or two days compared with the train. |
| Inside the Himalaya | Private car | Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Spiti and Kinnaur are connected by road; the car is the only way to see the valleys between them. |

How foreigners book Indian trains: the Foreign Tourist Quota
Indian Railways keeps a quota of seats for foreign tourists, bookable online on IRCTC. These are the rules, from IRCTC’s own terms.
- Register on IRCTC with an international mobileForeign users add and verify an international mobile number in their IRCTC profile, then use the Foreign Tourist ticket booking option.
- Book up to 365 days aheadForeign tourists can book up to 365 days in advance. The general window for everyone else was cut to 60 days from 1 November 2024; the 365-day limit for foreign tourists stayed (PIB, 17 Oct 2024). If you book beyond the general window, your berth is allotted when that window opens.
- Enter every passportThe passport number and nationality of each passenger are mandatory at booking. Names cannot be changed later.
- Pay by international cardPayment is only by international debit or credit card. The quota fare is 1.5 times the normal fare, plus a service charge per ticket; there are no concessions.
- Carry the original passport on boardBring the passport you booked with, with your valid visa. Without it you are treated as travelling without a ticket and charged a penalty of three times the fare. No visa yet? Apply only at the official site indianvisaonline.gov.in — beware look-alike sites that charge extra (our e-Visa guide walks you through it).
- Know the cancellation ruleIf you cancel, a flat 50% of the fare is deducted on top of the cancellation charges — online only, up to 4 hours before departure, refunded to the card you paid with.
Which train class to book
The Foreign Tourist Quota covers seven classes, depending on the train. For a first trip we suggest an air-conditioned class.
EC and CC — day trains
Executive Chair Car (EC) and AC Chair Car (CC) are reclining seats on fast day trains — the usual choice for Delhi–Agra or Delhi–Kalka.
1A, 2A, 3A — overnight AC
First AC, AC 2-tier and AC 3-tier are sleeping berths in air-conditioned coaches, from the most private (1A) to the most shared (3A).
SL and 2S — non-AC
Sleeper (SL) and Second Sitting (2S) are the cheapest and busiest. Fine for short hops if you travel light; not our pick for a first trip.

Domestic flights in India — and the winter fog
For long legs a domestic flight is the time-saver. The UK Foreign Office’s practical airport advice is to allow enough time to complete check-in and security procedures.
In winter, fog in North India delays both flights and trains. The Ministry of Civil Aviation tells airlines to warn passengers in advance about delays and cancellations caused by low visibility, and to cancel upcoming flights if the delay will be more than 3 hours (PIB, 1 Jan 2025). Delhi has runways equipped for low-visibility (CAT III) landings, and in 2024 six airports were certified for them: Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Amritsar, Bengaluru and Kolkata.
What it means for your plan: in the fog season, avoid a tight connection on the same day as an international flight, keep the first morning flexible, and give your driver the flight number so pick-ups follow the real arrival time. The best months for each region are in our best time to visit India guide.
Is train travel in India safe?
The UK Foreign Office says: “Train travel in India is generally safe, however accidents happen and have previously resulted in death and serious injury. There are police or guards on trains and stations if you need help. You must carry valid ID.” It also advises: do not accept food or drinks from strangers, take care of your passport and valuables as thefts are common, and “avoid people at railway stations offering tickets and tours as you may be scammed.”
On the road it warns that “buses are often driven fast and recklessly” and advises avoiding travel at night and in fog. That is why our cars drive in daylight, and why we suggest booking trains online on IRCTC rather than with anyone at the station.

When a private car beats both
You want the stops
Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Jaipur, a temple or a viewpoint in the hills — a train or plane can’t stop for them.
You're in the mountains
Himachal’s valleys are linked by road. Airports are small and weather-dependent; a car with a driver who knows hill roads keeps the trip moving.
You have luggage or family
Hotel door to hotel door, bags stay in the car, no station transfers at either end.
You want to know who's driving
Your driver’s name, photo and car number are shared with you before the trip. See how it works on our private car with driver page.
