Road tips for Delhi to Amritsar

Golden Temple is on foot

Cars cannot drive up to the Golden Temple — the approach along Heritage Street is a pedestrian zone. The driver drops you at the nearest parking and you walk the last few minutes, so pack a light day bag for the temple.

Wagah (Attari) on the same day

The Beating Retreat ceremony at Attari, about 30 km from Amritsar, is held around sunset; the BSF moved it to 6–6:30 pm for summer 2026 and it shifts earlier in winter. Reach 1.5–2 hours early for a seat. Leave Delhi by 5:30 am if you want to go straight to the border — tell us and the driver plans the day.

New expressway, old road for now

Sections of the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway were inaugurated in July 2026 in Haryana and near Jalandhar, but the full corridor is not due before 2027. Until it is, the quickest way is still NH44; your driver uses any open stretch only if it actually saves time.

Winter fog

In December and January dense morning fog is common on the Punjab plains. On foggy days we may push the start to after sunrise and add an hour to the plan — safety first.

Onward to the hills

From Amritsar, Dharamshala and Dalhousie are each a 5–6 hour drive via Pathankot, and Jammu about 4–5 hours. One car for Delhi–Amritsar–Dharamshala–Delhi is usually cheaper than separate one-way drops.

FAQ

Questions travellers ask

How much is a taxi from Delhi to Amritsar?

One-way fares start around ₹4,699 for a hatchback, ₹5,499 for a sedan, ₹6,699 for an Ertiga, ₹7,499 for a Kia Carens and ₹9,399 for an Innova Crysta. A 12-seater Tempo Traveller starts around ₹12,599. Tolls, parking and any state permit charges are extra at actuals; peak dates cost more.

How long does Delhi to Amritsar take by car?

About 7–8 hours for roughly 460 km with a breakfast and a lunch stop. Leaving Delhi before 6 am saves an hour of traffic around Panipat and Ludhiana.

Which route does the taxi take?

NH44, the old Grand Trunk Road: Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Rajpura, Khanna, Ludhiana, Phagwara, Jalandhar and Beas. It is four- to six-lane almost all the way.

Is the Amritsar to Delhi fare the same?

Yes. The same one-way fares apply from any Amritsar hotel, the Golden Temple parking, Amritsar Junction or Amritsar airport to anywhere in Delhi NCR, including IGI Airport.

Can we see the Wagah border ceremony on the day we arrive?

Yes, if you leave Delhi by about 5:30 am. Attari is about 30 km past Amritsar and the ceremony is at sunset, so the driver can take you straight to the border and then to your hotel. Tell us when you book.

Can you pick me up from Delhi airport for Amritsar?

Yes, from IGI T1, T2 or T3. The driver waits at arrivals with your name and tracks your flight.

Is the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway open yet?

Only in parts. Stretches in Haryana and near Jalandhar were inaugurated in July 2026, but the full road is not complete, so taxis still run on NH44 for most of the way.

Can the same taxi do Amritsar with Dharamshala or Dalhousie?

Yes. Multi-day trips are billed per kilometre (a sedan is ₹12/km, 250 km daily minimum) plus ₹400 a night driver allowance. Delhi–Amritsar–Dharamshala–Delhi in 5–6 days is a popular circuit.
