Sethan Valley at a glance
Sethan is a small Buddhist village at about 2,700 m on the Hamta road, 12–15 km above Manali via Prini. In winter it is the quietest deep-snow spot near Manali: snow is most reliable in January and February, and igloo stays run from about mid-January to March. Vehicles need the online Hamta road permit, and after fresh snow only 4x4s with chains get through.

Sethan Valley — your questions
Is there snow in Sethan in November or December?
Usually not in November. December depends on the year — some years bring the first snow, often patchy. January and February are the most reliable snow months; by late March the snow turns slushy.
Can a normal car reach Sethan in winter?
On a cleared, dry road, yes. After fresh snow the Hamta road often allows only 4×4 vehicles with chains, and it can close for a day or two after heavy snowfall. We check the road report for your date and send a 4×4 when needed.
Do I need a permit for Sethan?
Yes. Vehicles going up the Hamta road need the online Hamta road permit (a congestion charge) from the HP permits portal, with a daily cap on vehicles. Fees and caps are set by the district and can change, so we book it for your date.
When are Sethan igloo stays open?
From about mid-January to March, and only when there is enough snow. In 2026 late snow kept the igloo season going to the end of March. See our igloo stay in Manali page.
Can we ski in Sethan?
Yes, on natural slopes with a guide and hired gear when the snow base is deep. There is no formal ski school at Sethan, so beginners who want a proper course go to Solang — see skiing in Himachal.
How far is Sethan from Manali?
About 12–15 km via Prini and the Hamta road: 35–60 minutes on a dry road and 1–2 hours on snow.
Sethan, Solang or Sissu — which is better?
Sethan is quieter with deeper snow and overnight igloos. Solang has the ropeway and most activities. Sissu via the Atal Tunnel has big open snowfields but depends on the tunnel road status.
Is Sethan worth visiting in summer?
Yes, for a quiet day: green meadows, the Pandu Ropa walk and views of the Hamta valley. The Hampta Pass trek starts just beyond, at Jobra (June–September).
