On the trail

The path climbs through oak and deodar forest, past small clearings and village huts, onto open meadows just below the lake. It is steady rather than steep — most fit beginners manage it.

Carry water, a warm layer and a rain shell, and good shoes with grip. In winter add gloves, a cap and snow boots or gaiters (arranged on request).

Safety first

What we check before we book your trip

Suzu Travels is an HP Tourism registered travel agent (Reg. No. DTO-MND-11-243/2022). We arrange the trek with registered local operators and plan around these checks:

  • Snow and roadsFresh snow has stranded 100+ tourists and 25 vehicles near Prashar (December 2021). In Dec–Feb we use a hill-trained driver, start early and keep a buffer day.
  • Guide in winterWinter treks only with a registered guide; snow boots and gaiters arranged on request.
  • A sacred lakeNo swimming, no stepping onto the floating island and no litter; the temple sanctum is for priests.
  • Cold nightsAt 2,730 m altitude sickness is rarely an issue, but winter nights drop well below freezing — bring warm layers.
  • MonsoonJuly–August brings fog, leeches and slips on the road; we only plan it with flexible dates.

Prashar Lake + Manali, or a Mandi weekend

Prashar is close to the Chandigarh–Manali highway, so it fits two ways: Chandigarh → Mandi (Prashar, 1 night) → Manali (3 nights), or a weekend from our Bilaspur side with a paragliding flight at Bandla and the Prashar trek. Read our Manali guide, see the Himachal tour package from Delhi or adventure activities in Manali. Need only a cab? Book a Chandigarh to Manali taxi (it passes Mandi) or a Delhi to Manali taxi.

FAQ

Prashar Lake trek — questions

How long is the Prashar Lake trek?

About 7.5–8 km one way from Baggi village, usually 4–5 hours up and 3–4 hours down at an easy pace.

Can you drive to Prashar Lake?

Yes. A narrow road reaches the lake from Mandi or Bajaura, about 49 km. In snow it can close beyond Baggi, so you walk the last stretch.

When does Prashar Lake get snow?

Usually from mid-December to February, when the lake is partly frozen. Fresh snow can block the road, so keep a buffer day.

What is the floating island?

A round mat of plants that drifts across the lake; it covers about 7% of the surface. Please do not step on it.

Who built the Prashar temple?

The three-tier pagoda temple to sage Prashar is credited to Raja Ban Sen of Mandi, in the 13th–14th century.

Is it good for beginners and children?

Yes. At 2,730 m it is one of Himachal’s easiest treks, and families can drive up when the road is open.

Where do I stay?

Near the lake (rooms are limited, so book early) or in Mandi town. We book the stay together with your cab.

How much does a Prashar Lake trip cost?

It depends on the month, group size, cab pickup point and stay. Send your dates on WhatsApp for today’s rate within minutes — Price: Get Quote.
