Updated: October 2026 · Road, rail and season details checked 22 October 2026.

For a 2-day weekend from Chandigarh, stay within about 4 hours of driving. Kasauli and Solan are 1.5–2 hours away; Chail, Shimla and Mashobra take 3–4 hours. Save Narkanda (about 5 hours), Dharamshala, Bir and Jibhi (6–7 hours) for 3-day weekends. In winter, start early and drive back before dark, because black ice forms on shaded bends.

Quick answer

  • Saturday–Sunday: Kasauli/Dagshai, Chail, or Shimla with Mashobra.
  • 3-day weekend: Narkanda (snow from about December), Bir-Billing, Dharamshala/McLeodganj, or Jibhi in the Tirthan Valley.
  • Getting there: a private cab, HRTC Volvo/ordinary buses from ISBT Sector 43, or self-drive.
  • Toy train: trains run only Dharampur–Shimla for now; the Kalka–Dharampur stretch is shut for repairs after monsoon damage near Parwanoo.
  • Winter weekends (Nov–Feb): carry thermals, and plan the return in daylight.

How far are the Himachal weekend spots from Chandigarh?

Times are for a car leaving Chandigarh early on a weekend morning. Friday evening and Sunday afternoon traffic near Parwanoo and Solan can add an hour or more.

Place Road distance Typical drive Best for
Kasauli / Dagshai about 60–65 km 1.5–2 h Shortest escape, colonial lanes, pine walks
Solan / Barog about 65–70 km 1.5–2 h Easy overnight, Barog railway tunnel area
Chail about 108 km 3–4 h Quiet forest stay, Chail Palace
Shimla about 115 km 3–3.5 h Mall Road, Ridge, Jakhu
Mashobra / Naldehra about 125–140 km 3.5–4.5 h Apple orchards, quiet stays past Shimla
Narkanda about 175 km about 5 h Snow views, Hatu Peak (3-day weekend)
Dharamshala / McLeodganj about 240 km about 6 h Monasteries, cafés (3-day weekend)
Jibhi (Tirthan Valley) about 265 km 6–7 h Wooden cottages, river walks (3-day weekend)
Manali about 290–300 km 7–9 h Only for 3+ days

Where should you go for a 2-day weekend?

Kasauli, or Dagshai and Sanawar instead

Kasauli is the closest proper hill town, but its narrow lanes jam on Saturday evenings. Dagshai, an old cantonment a short detour from Dharampur, and the forest roads around Sanawar are quieter alternatives with the same pine views.

Chail

Chail is reached by branching off at Kandaghat. It is quieter than Shimla, with deodar forest, the Chail Palace (built in 1891 by the Maharaja of Patiala, now an HPTDC hotel) and a cricket ground that is often called one of the world’s highest.

Shimla with Mashobra

Do the Ridge and Mall Road on day one. Sleep in Mashobra or Naldehra, 13–25 km beyond Shimla, to skip the town-centre traffic. Craignano and the Mashobra forest make a calm morning walk. For December dates, read Shimla in December 2026 for snow chances and Christmas crowds.

Where should you go for a 3-day weekend?

  • Narkanda: about 60 km past Shimla. Snow usually comes from December, and the Hatu Peak road can close after heavy snowfall.
  • Bir-Billing: Tibetan colonies and paragliding in Bir Billing, roughly October to June outside the monsoon.
  • Dharamshala and McLeodganj: the Dalai Lama temple complex, Bhagsu and café streets.
  • Jibhi and Tirthan Valley: take the four-lane road to Aut, then go via Banjar. See our Jibhi and Tirthan itinerary.

The Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane section, with its tunnels, opened in 2023 and cut the drive to Mandi, Bir and the Tirthan side by roughly 1–2 hours compared with the old two-lane road. That is what makes these places workable for a long weekend.

Cab, bus, self-drive or toy train: which is best?

Option Good for Watch out for
Private cab with driver Families and couples; door-to-door; you rest while someone else drives the curves Book early for Friday evening and long weekends. One-way Chandigarh to Shimla taxi fares start from ₹2,499.
HRTC / private Volvo Solo travellers and tight budgets; HRTC runs from ISBT Sector 43 Fixed timings; you need local taxis at the other end
Self-drive Experienced hill drivers Black ice in winter, weekend jams at Parwanoo and Solan, parking in Kasauli and Shimla
Kalka–Shimla toy train A slow heritage ride (UNESCO World Heritage line, 100+ tunnels) For now trains run only Dharampur–Shimla; Kalka–Dharampur is shut after monsoon damage. Check IRCTC before you plan around it.

A sample 48-hour plan: Chail and Mashobra

Day 1 (Saturday)

  • 06:00 Leave Chandigarh, before the Parwanoo toll queue builds.
  • 08:30 Breakfast at a Dharampur dhaba.
  • 11:00 Turn off at Kandaghat for Chail: walk the palace grounds and forest roads.
  • 15:30 Drive on via Kufri to Mashobra and check in.
  • 17:30 Sunset from your stay. In winter, sunset is around 17:15.

Day 2 (Sunday)

  • 08:00 Forest walk around Mashobra or Craignano.
  • 11:00 Optional hour on the Ridge and Mall Road in Shimla.
  • 13:30 Head down. Aim to be past Solan before dark.
  • 18:00–19:00 Back in Chandigarh.

What changes on a winter weekend (November–February)?

  • Snow: Kufri, Narkanda and the upper Shimla roads can get snow from about December. Kasauli and Chail get it only now and then.
  • Black ice: shaded bends freeze after sunset. Drive back in daylight, and let the hotel tell you whether chains are needed.
  • Short days: about 10 hours of daylight in December, so plan fewer stops.
  • Peak dates: 20 December–5 January is the busiest stretch of the year. Book stays and cabs early.

Frequently asked questions

Which Himachal place is nearest to Chandigarh for a weekend?

Kasauli, Dagshai, Solan and Barog are all within about 60–70 km, a 1.5–2 hour drive via Parwanoo. That makes them the easiest Saturday–Sunday trips. Chail and Shimla, at about 108–115 km and 3–4 hours, also work for two days if you leave early on Saturday morning.

Where should I go from Chandigarh for 3 days?

With three days you can go further: Narkanda for snow views (about 5 hours), Bir-Billing for paragliding and monasteries, Dharamshala/McLeodganj (about 6 hours) or Jibhi in the Tirthan Valley (about 6–7 hours via Aut and Banjar). Keep Manali, 7–9 hours away, for 4 days or more.

Is the Kalka–Shimla toy train running now?

Partly. Since early September 2026, trains have run only between Dharampur and Shimla, with road transfers between Kalka and Dharampur. The track near Parwanoo was damaged in the monsoon. The railway has not confirmed a firm date for Kalka services to resume, so check IRCTC before you book.

Can I see snow on a weekend trip from Chandigarh?

Your best chance is from late December to February, at Kufri, Narkanda or the upper roads beyond Shimla, a 3.5–5 hour drive. Snow in Kasauli and Chail is occasional. After a fresh snowfall, roads can close for a day, so keep the plan flexible and drive back before dark.

How much does a weekend trip to Himachal from Chandigarh cost?

It depends mainly on transport and hotel. A bus plus a homestay is the cheapest option. A private cab is the main cost for couples and families: one-way Chandigarh–Shimla taxis start from ₹2,499. Weekend hotel rates rise on long weekends and from 20 December to 5 January, so book early for those dates.

Is it safe to drive to Himachal from Chandigarh in winter?

Yes, on the main highways, with care. Start early, avoid driving after dark when shaded bends ice over, and check road updates after any snowfall. If you are not used to hill roads, a cab with a local driver is the safer choice on the Shimla, Narkanda and Kufri stretches.
