Spiti bike trip, at a glance
A Spiti bike trip is a high-altitude loop to Kaza on two roads: the Shimla–Kinnaur highway via Reckong Peo, Nako and Tabo, and the Manali side via the Atal Tunnel, Gramphu and Kunzum Pass. Both are usually open together from mid-June to September. The Manali side shuts with the first heavy snow — this year on 15 October 2026 — so plan by month, not by wish.
Pick your Spiti ride
The full circuit is the classic. Outside mid-June to September, the Kinnaur side is your road — and in winter, leave the bike at home.

Which road is open in your month?
- Kinnaur road — open most of the year, with snow and landslide breaks.
- Manali–Kunzum road — usually mid-June to mid-October.
- Full circuit — mid-June to September.
- After snow — some days are 4×4-only beyond the Atal Tunnel.
We check both roads for your dates before we plan.
Your Spiti ride, step by step
-
Send your dates
Your month, number of riders and whether you bring your own bike.
-
We check both roads
DDMA Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur updates for your dates — then we pick the direction.
-
Bikes and papers
Bikes from registered local rentals in Manali or Shimla; licence and bike papers checked.
-
Acclimatise on the way up
Night stops booked with an easy day at Kalpa or Tabo on the Kinnaur side.
-
Ride early
Stream crossings and slush are easier in the morning; long fuel gaps — carry spare fuel.
-
Backup ready
Backup cab or 4×4 on request, and a Shimla exit kept open if Kunzum shuts.
Ride smart at altitude
Kunzum Pass is about 4,550 m (14,931 ft). Coming in through Kinnaur lets your body adjust slowly; riding Manali to Kaza in one go is the hard way.
Start early, keep warm layers and rain gear on the bike, and plan short days on the high stretch. Need a bike? See bike rent in Manali. Coming from Delhi? Kaza is roughly 700–800 km one way, with long fuel gaps — read our Delhi to Spiti road trip guide.

What we check before your Spiti ride
Suzu Travels is an HP Tourism registered travel agent (Reg. No. DTO-MND-11-243/2022). We arrange bikes with registered local rentals and check these first:
- Winter closure orderThe DDMA Lahaul-Spiti closes Gramphu–Losar for winter ‘until further orders’; travel after closure is at your own risk, and hotels must brief guests (The Tribune, 25 Nov 2025).
- Staged reopeningKunzum opens to light vehicles and 4x4s first, heavy vehicles later (20 May 2026). Bikes follow the official go-ahead, not a blog date.
- After snowRoads beyond Solang and the Atal Tunnel can be 4×4-only on some days — we keep a Kinnaur exit in the plan.
- AltitudeKunzum ~4,550 m. Acclimatise on the way up; avoid a fast climb from Manali to Kaza in one day if you can.
- Permits and border areasForeigners need a Protected Area Permit; the Shipki La and Kaurik roads are closed to visitors; no photos of military installations (DC Kinnaur).
- Papers and gearLicence for the bike class, RC or rental agreement and ID with every rider; helmet on, always.

Spiti bike trip — questions
What is the best time for a Spiti bike trip?
Mid-June to September, when both the Kinnaur and Manali–Kunzum roads are usually open; September is calmest. In October the Manali side can shut with the first snow, as it did on 15 October 2026.
Which route is better: Shimla or Manali?
Go in through Kinnaur (lower, slower climb, better for altitude) and out over Kunzum to Manali. Many riders do the reverse only if they are already used to altitude.
Is the Manali–Kaza road open now?
It closed after snow on 15 October 2026, and the district formally shuts Gramphu–Losar for winter in late November each year. We check the latest DDMA update for your date — see our road status page.
Do I need a permit for Spiti?
Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for the Pooh and Spiti areas. Indian riders carry ID and bike papers; we confirm current rules before your trip.
When does Kunzum Pass open?
It reopened on 20 May 2026 for light 4×4 vehicles after about six months shut; full traffic followed later. Dates change every year with the snow.
Can I rent a bike in Manali for Spiti?
Yes — we arrange it with registered local rentals and check the papers. See our bike rent in Manali page.
What does a Spiti bike trip cost?
It depends on days, bike, backup vehicle, stays and month. Send your dates on WhatsApp and we share today’s rate within minutes — Get Quote.
Can I ride to Spiti in winter?
We don’t advise it: only the Kinnaur side stays open, with snow and closures. For winter Spiti, go by 4×4 with a driver — see snow leopard spotting in Spiti.
