Snow leopard spotting in Spiti, at a glance
Snow leopards live around Kibber in Spiti, and winter (December–February) is when they come lower and local spotters can find them from village ridges. A spotting trip means 3 or more dawn-to-dusk days at about 4,270 m, village homestays and nights near −20 °C, reached only via Shimla and Kinnaur. Sightings are never guaranteed; we plan the full winter trip with hotel and cab.

What we check before we plan your trip
Suzu Travels is an HP Tourism registered travel agent (Reg. No. DTO-MND-11-243/2022). We arrange the stays, cab and spotter days on request with registered local operators and plan around these checks:
- AltitudeGain about 500 m sleeping height a night and add a rest night per ~1,000 m above 3,000 m. Kaza has only a Community Health Centre — take medical advice for heart, BP or breathing conditions; not for small children.
- Winter roadOnly the Shimla–Kinnaur route is open; Kunzum Pass (Manali side) is shut roughly Nov–Jun. SUV with snow chains and a local winter driver — no self-drive.
- Wildlife rulesKibber Wildlife Sanctuary falls under the Wildlife Protection Act: stay on trails, keep your distance, no baiting or calling animals, no off-road driving across pastures, carry all litter out.
- Mating seasonA February 2021 order of the Kaza ADM banned car rallies in the sanctuary in winter to protect the snow leopards’ mating season.
- PermitsIndians register at the Jangi/Sumdo checkposts with photo ID; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (14 days, group of 2+, via a registered agency).
- Cold & powerLayered down clothing, a sleeping bag rated to −20 °C and a power bank — electricity can fail for a day after snowfall.

Snow leopard in Spiti — questions
Can you see snow leopards in Spiti?
Yes. Spiti and Pin have Himachal’s highest snow-leopard density — the HP Forest Department–NCF survey (October 2025) counted 83 snow leopards statewide — and winter around Kibber gives the best chance. Sightings are never guaranteed.
What is the best time to see snow leopards in Spiti?
December to February, with January and February the core tracking months, when snow leopards follow blue sheep lower around Kibber.
How many days do I need?
Winter Spiti needs 7–8 days from Shimla on its own; with 3 or more spotting days and a buffer day, plan 9–11 days.
Where do you stay?
Heated village homestays in Kibber or hotels in Kaza. Heat comes from a bukhari stove, and hot water comes in buckets once the pipes freeze.
How cold is it?
January nights at Kaza fall to about −15 to −25 °C; Kibber sits higher, at about 4,270 m, and feels colder.
Can I go via Manali?
No. Kunzum Pass on the Manali side closes roughly from November to June, so winter trips go in and out via Shimla and Kinnaur. See our winter Spiti guide.
Do I need a permit?
Indian nationals register at the checkposts with photo ID; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered agency. More in our Himachal permits guide.
How much does a snow leopard trip cost?
It depends on the number of days, vehicle, group size and stay. Send your month on WhatsApp and we send today’s plan within minutes — Price: Get Quote.
