What we check before we book your trip
Suzu Travels is an HP Tourism registered travel agent (Reg. No. DTO-MND-11-243/2022). We plan your Shangarh trip around these checks:
- Temple landTreat the meadow as temple land: no camping on it, no loud music, no alcohol, no litter. Follow the signboards and the village.
- Sacred lakePundrik Rishi lake is holy to locals: do not enter the water; alcohol and non-veg food are not allowed near it.
- Monsoon roadIn July–August landslides can block the Aut–Sainj road for hours — keep a buffer day.
- Winter drivingThe steep last stretch can ice up: we drive it in daylight with a local driver; chains or a 4×4 arranged on request.
- Cash and fuelNo ATM or fuel pump in Shangarh — carry cash; the last fuel stop is down on the highway.
- National parkGoing beyond day walks into the Great Himalayan National Park means park rules: a permit at Ropa and a certified guide for multi-day treks.

Shangarh + Tirthan: one valley trip from Aut
Shangarh and Tirthan are both reached from Aut, so they fit one easy trip: Chandigarh → Shangarh (1 night) → Tirthan or Jibhi (2 nights) → back — about 3 nights and 4 days, with a national park walk if you like. Or add one Shangarh night to a Manali trip on the way up. Read our Tirthan Valley guide, the Jibhi guide and the Kullu Valley travel guide; for longer walks see the Great Himalayan National Park trek and the Serolsar Lake trek from Jalori.
Shangarh — questions
How do I reach Shangarh?
Leave the Chandigarh–Manali highway at Aut, drive up the Sainj Valley to Sainj and Ropa, then climb to Shangarh. It takes about two hours from Aut; the last part is a steep, narrow road, so we send a suitable car.
How high is Shangarh?
About 2,080 m. The national park’s rest house at Shangarh is listed at 2,082 m.
When is the best time to visit Shangarh?
March to June for green meadows and September to November for clear skies. July and August are monsoon months with landslide risk on the valley road.
Does Shangarh get snow?
Yes, usually between December and February, with nights below freezing. The upper road can close for a short time after heavy snow, so plan a buffer day.
Can I camp on Shangarh meadow?
Treat the meadow as temple land: camping, loud music and alcohol are not allowed on it. Stay in a village homestay instead. This is a local rule — the village and temple committee have the final word.
How far is Pundrik Rishi lake?
It is an uphill forest walk from Shangarh, best done as a morning outing. Do not step into the lake; it is sacred to locals.
Do I need a permit for Shangarh?
A day visit to the village and meadow needs no park permit as far as we found. Multi-day treks into the Great Himalayan National Park from Sainj need a permit from the Ropa range office and a certified guide.
Can Shangarh be combined with Tirthan Valley?
Yes. Both are reached from Aut, so a 3–4 night trip can cover Shangarh, Tirthan or Jibhi and a national park walk. Send your dates — Get Quote for today’s rate.
