What is a mountaineering course in India, and where can you do one?
A mountaineering course in India starts with the Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC): 24 to 28 days of field training at a government institute such as NIM in Uttarkashi, HMI in Darjeeling or ABVIMAS in Manali. An ‘A’ grade in the BMC opens the Advanced course (AMC), then the instructor course (MOI). Many graduates then try a first summit from our trekking peaks guide.
Five government institutes run India’s recognised mountaineering courses: the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) in Manali, the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports (JIM&WS) at Nunwan near Pahalgam, and the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) in Dirang. There is no official ranking between them, so choose by batch month, age limit and location.
Course seasons follow the climbing seasons: Uttarakhand and Himachal batches run before the monsoon (March to June) and after it (September to November), and the Kashmir batches in summer. The institute runs the field phase, so a trainee needs no climbing permit of their own. For where these mountains sit in the wider range, start with our Indian Himalaya guide.

From each institute’s official 2026 or 2026–27 programme, checked 5 Oct 2026. Seats: NIM 80–90 per BMC batch, ABVIMAS 75, JIM&WS 60. Batches fill early (JIM&WS showed its July and August BMCs as full). Fees are set by each institute and differ for Indian and foreign trainees: read them in the official programme before you apply.
From the Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC) to instructor: how the grades work
- Basic Mountaineering Course (BMC), 24–28 days.Your first course, open from about age 16 or 17 depending on the institute. Each trainee finishes with a grade: A, B or C.
- Advanced Mountaineering Course (AMC), 24–28 days.Open only to trainees graded ‘A’ in the BMC. NIM’s AMC takes ages 18–42; JIM&WS’s takes 17–42 and accepts an ‘A’ grade from any recognised institute. HMI runs AMC batches from May 2026 to March 2027, including a women’s batch from 3 to 30 May.
- Method of Instruction (MOI), 15–21 days. The instructor course. NIM asks for an ‘A’ grade in the AMC and takes ages 19–45.
- Search and Rescue (SAR), 21 days.Offered at NIM, which asks for a high level of physical fitness. ABVIMAS also runs AMC, MOI and SAR courses.
Why the grade matters later: Indian teams applying to the Indian Mountaineering Foundation need a leader with an advanced course and a summit above 6,400 m, and half the members with the AMC, the rest with the BMC. Every fee band and rule is in our IMF permit and peak fees guide.
How to get a seat, and what the institute expects
Apply online
- Every institute takes applications on its own website.
- ABVIMAS states that offline or postal applications are not accepted.
- Popular summer batches fill well ahead, so apply as soon as a programme is published.
Fitness
- NIM tests trainees on a 10 km walk carrying a 10 kg load.
- Train for long uphill days with a pack before you go.
- The SAR course asks for a high level of physical fitness.
Arrival and kit
- At NIM, trainees report the evening before the course starts; late arrival, even by one day, is not permitted.
- NIM provides mountaineering clothing and technical equipment (2023 brochure).
- Check your own institute’s kit list in its official programme.
Is there a mountaineering institute in Himachal Pradesh?
Yes. ABVIMAS in Manali was founded in 1961 as the Western Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and renamed in 2008. Its 26-day BMC runs in five 2026 batches (May, June, July, September and October), each for 75 trainees aged 16–45. It accepts men and women, Indians and foreign nationals, and takes applications online only.
The course grades also matter in Himachal’s own rules: under the HP Miscellaneous Adventure Activities (Amendment) Rules 2021, difficult treks may be led only by guides who hold the MOI course from ABVIMAS or an equivalent institute. More about the state’s summits is in our Himachal Pradesh climbing guide.
Do you need a BMC to climb a peak?
Guided climbs
- Most guided trekking-peak climbs do not ask for a BMC; the outfitter asks about your high-altitude trekking experience.
- A course still makes you safer and more confident on snow and rope.
Your own expedition
- Indian teams applying to the IMF on their own must meet its course rules: half the members with the AMC, the rest with the BMC.
- The leader needs an advanced course and a summit above 6,400 m.
A first summit
- Friendship Peak (5,289 m / 17,352 ft) above Solang is the classic first snow climb from Manali.
- Yunam (6,111 m / 20,049 ft) in Lahaul is a common first 6,000er.

Mountaineering courses in India: questions trainees ask
Which is the best mountaineering institute in India?
There is no official ranking. The five government institutes (NIM, HMI, ABVIMAS, JIM&WS and NIMAS) run the recognised BMC and AMC courses. Choose by batch month, age limit and location.
How long is a basic mountaineering course?
24 to 28 days, depending on the institute: 24 days at JIM&WS, 26 days at ABVIMAS, and 28 days at NIM and HMI.
What is the age limit for the BMC?
Roughly 16 to 45, depending on the institute and batch: NIM 16–40 with two batches for 20–55, ABVIMAS 16–45, HMI 17–45 and JIM&WS 17–40.
Can foreigners do a mountaineering course in India?
Yes. ABVIMAS in Manali accepts Indians and foreign nationals, and NIM’s programme lists a separate fee for foreign trainees. Check each institute’s official programme before you apply.
How do I get into the Advanced Mountaineering Course (AMC)?
You need an ‘A’ grade in the Basic Mountaineering Course. JIM&WS accepts an ‘A’ grade from any recognised mountaineering institute.
Do I need a BMC course to climb a peak in India?
Not for most guided trekking-peak climbs, where the outfitter asks about your high-altitude trekking experience. Indian teams applying to the IMF for an expedition need course-qualified members: half with the AMC and the rest with the BMC.
How fit do I need to be for a mountaineering course?
Fit enough for long days with a load. NIM, for example, tests trainees on a 10 km walk carrying a 10 kg load.
Is there a mountaineering institute in Himachal Pradesh?
Yes: ABVIMAS in Manali, founded in 1961 as the Western Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. It runs the BMC, AMC, MOI and SAR courses.
