Manali to Leh by road, stop by stop
The route our drivers take, with the stops worth making.
- ManaliEarly pickup (5–6 am) from your hotel in Manali, Old Manali, Vashisht or on the Solang road.
- Atal Tunnel · SissuThe 9 km tunnel under the Pir Panjal replaced the climb over Rohtang; you come out into the bare, bright Lahaul valley above Sissu.
- Tandi · KeylongFill up at Tandi, near Keylong — it is the last fuel pump until Karu, about 30 km short of Leh. Keylong is the district town with ATMs and a hospital.
- Jispa · DarchaThe usual first-night halt beside the Bhaga river at about 3,300 m. Sleeping here rather than at Sarchu is gentler on the body.
- Zing Zing Bar · Baralacha LaDay two starts with the climb to Baralacha La (about 4,850 m). Snowmelt streams cross the road here, so drivers like to be over early in the morning.
- SarchuTent camps on a wide plateau at about 4,200 m, near the Himachal–Ladakh line. Tea and a short break.
- Gata Loops · Nakee La · Lachulung LaTwenty-one hairpins and then two passes above 4,700 m. Drink water, keep stops short, and tell the driver if anyone feels unwell.
- Pang · More PlainsDhaba camps at Pang, then a long, high, open plain at about 4,700 m — rough patches, dust and big skies.
- Tanglang La · Upshi · KaruThe highest point of the drive at 5,328 m, then the descent past Rumtse to the Indus at Upshi and the fuel pump at Karu.
- LehDrop at your hotel or guesthouse in Leh. Rest for the rest of the day.

Road tips for Manali to Leh
Season: late May to mid-October
Snow shuts the Darcha–Sarchu stretch every winter. In 2026 the Lahaul-Spiti administration and BRO reopened it to light vehicles on 15 May, and fresh snow on Baralacha La closed it again on 15 October (our road update). Outside that window, fly to Leh — we take enquiries now for the 2027 season.
Altitude comes first
Most of day two is above 4,000 m and Tanglang La is 5,328 m. Spend a night or two in Manali first, stop overnight in Jispa or Keylong rather than Sarchu, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Read our altitude sickness guide; children, seniors and anyone with heart or lung conditions should talk to a doctor before the trip.
Pick the right car
A sedan can make it in dry weather for 2–3 people with light bags, but it sits low for the water crossings near Zing Zing Bar and the rough stretches around Pang. Most families choose an Innova Crysta or Ertiga; a Fortuner suits travellers who want the most ground clearance.
The car drops you in Leh
Sightseeing inside Ladakh — Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Khardung La — runs in Ladakh-registered local taxis under the Leh taxi union’s rules. Your Manali car drops you in Leh and returns; we book the Leh taxi and the permits for Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri for you.
Cash, fuel and signal
There are no fuel pumps for well over 300 km between Tandi and Karu, ATMs end at Keylong, and mobile signal is patchy past Darcha. Carry cash, warm layers even in July, snacks and your ID for police check posts.
Two days is the minimum
Snow, a landslide or a stream in spate can hold traffic for hours. Do not book a flight out of Leh on the evening you arrive; keep a spare day at the end of any Ladakh plan.

Questions travellers ask
What is the Manali to Leh taxi fare?
One-way fares start around ₹10,399 for a sedan, ₹13,099 for an Ertiga, ₹15,199 for a Kia Carens and ₹17,899 for an Innova Crysta. A Toyota Fortuner starts around ₹28,899 and a 12-seater Tempo Traveller around ₹35,099. Tolls, parking and permits are extra at actuals; your own room for the night halt is not included.
What is the distance from Manali to Leh by road?
About 430 km on the Manali–Leh highway through the Atal Tunnel. Before the tunnel opened in 2020 the route over Rohtang Pass was roughly 45 km longer.
How many days does Manali to Leh take by taxi?
Two days. Day one is Manali to Jispa or Keylong (a short, easy day that helps you acclimatise); day two crosses Baralacha La, Sarchu, the Gata Loops and Tanglang La to reach Leh by evening. Doing it in one 13–14 hour push is possible but hard on the body at this altitude.
When is the Manali–Leh highway open?
Usually from late May or June to around mid-October, depending on snow. In 2026 it reopened to light vehicles on 15 May and snow closed Darcha–Sarchu on 15 October. We confirm the road report from the Lahaul-Spiti administration before every departure.
Do I need a permit for Manali to Leh?
No permit is needed for the Manali–Leh highway itself through the Atal Tunnel; carry your ID for police check posts. Nubra, Pangong and Tso Moriri beyond Leh need a permit, which we arrange with your Leh sightseeing.
Can the same taxi take us to Nubra and Pangong?
No. Sightseeing inside Ladakh is done in Ladakh-registered local taxis as per the Leh taxi union’s rules, so your Manali car drops you in Leh. We book the Leh local taxi for Nubra, Pangong and Khardung La for you.
Is the Leh to Manali fare the same?
Yes, the same one-way fares apply from Leh to Manali. Many travellers prefer this direction: fly into Leh, acclimatise there for two or three days, then drive back to Manali with a night at Jispa or Keylong.
Which car is best for Manali to Leh?
An Innova Crysta for families and groups of up to 6–7, an Ertiga for budget groups, a Fortuner for extra ground clearance, and a Tempo Traveller for 8 or more people. A sedan suits 2–3 people with light luggage in dry weather.
